Christina Storm to Play a Lesbian Prostitute on New South African TV show "Flesh"

South African model-turned-actress Christina Storm is set to co-star as a lesbian prostitute in the new TV series tentatively titled Flesh, according to South Africa's News24.com.

The psychological thriller by producer Franz Marx — who created the long-running South African soapie Egoli is set in Cape Town and stars Shaleen Surtie-Richards as an experienced detective investigating serial killers.

Shaleen has starred on Egoli since 1992.

In the pilot, Surtie-Richards's character Penelope de Vos pursues a killer targeting gay men, one of whom is played by Gert van Schalkwyk (Egoli).

According to News24, the other well-known actors who play roles in the pilot episode include Ashley Dowds, Jill Middelkop (Egoli), "and a model, Leigh, who plays a lesbian prostitute."

The pilot has reportedly been finished, and is now being shopped to local television networks.

Storm became well-known in South Africa for dating one of the country's star rugby players, James Small; they have since broken up.

It's unclear exactly how Storm's lesbian prostitute character figures into the storyline, but if the series gets picked up, she would be one of the few lesbian characters on South African television.

Mbali Ntuli currently plays a lesbian on the soapie Rythm City, but her character development has been minimal so far, and her love life non-existent. The popular 2007 mini-series Society, which featured a prominent lesbian character, has been re-cut as a feature film and is currently making the film festival rounds, but there are no plans to bring it back to TV.

By including a regular or recurring lesbian character, Flesh would dramatically increase lesbian visibility on South African television. The fact that she's a prostitute, however, may create/reinforce stereotypes about lesbians, rather than challenge them.

We'll keep you posted if/when we learn more.

Thanks to RainbowSheep for the tip!

It's something though, I guess........

For a country with legalized gay marriage, South Africa sure is conservative! I just wish that they'd really get down and talk about LGBT issues in the media. When I was still living there (back in 2002), LGBT was pretty much taboo so I guess it's going to be a while since society accepts it. Hopefully it will be soon though! I AM ANGRY, TIRED, HURT, SAD AND DAMN WELL MAD THAT OUR LESBIAN AND BISEXUAL SISTERS ARE BEING ATTACKED! I think that protection of LGBT rights needs to become a priority. It's not enough that the constitution says so much when nothing is being done.

On a happier note, it's nice to see Shaleen Surtie-Richards in what seems to be a challenging role and different to her usual comedy although she's hella funny! Hope to check this out when I'm there!

Also, thanks Sarah Warn! I love the diversity of the articles recently.

I *highly* doubt it...

She would rather service only women, but you know that's not going to happen...

*Shrugs*

I remember watching a documentry about this lesbian who was a stripper and tried to make sense of it. I'll just say it was interesting.

Yeah, I'm doubtful on this one...

...there have been other attempts to smush together the experiences of lesbian & bi women, or the LGBT community more generally, with those of women in prostitution and sex workers, and in my experience, they usually do a disservice to both communities. No offense to lesbian prostitutes and sex workers, who certainly exist, but if there's so little representation of lesbian & bi women in South Africa this seems like a bad place to start.

Is anyone else disappointed that this actress appears to be white? Everything I've read seems to show that it's the representation of black lesbian & bi women which is really lacking. Making her white...and a prostitute...and what sounds likely to be a minor character seems like a cop-out.

Has this site ever thought of interviewing the black bisexual poet Bernedette Muthien? I'd love to read a piece about her.

Why christina Storm?

I highly doubt that this will be an honest or even moderately insightful portrayal of a lesbian woman. But I would love to be proven wrong!

New book coming out next year: "Elle Lothairo"

The subject matter deals with a lesbian hooker/prostitue for women only. I haven't seen much else about it other than it might be based on a true story. Sort of like a happy hooker for women. I have a friend who is a proof reader and has sworn me to secrecy about saying too much before its release date.
