badmachine's blogJoss Whedon gives an update on "Dollhouse" renovationsIn a blog post on Whedonesque earlier this week, television genius Joss Whedon wrote an update about his much-anticipated (and currently delayed) new Fox series Dollhouse.
As anyone who has ever built a house can tell you, it takes twice as long as you thought it would, costs more than you budgeted, and consumes your every waking thought. And when it's done, it might not be what you originally wanted, but that's not necessarily bad thing. Dollhouse is about a secret house where people known as "dolls" have their memories and personalities erased and replaced with new ones, enabling them to be hired out for various assignments, some of which are probably illegal. Eliza Dushku plays Echo, a doll who inexplicably begins to remember her real identity. Submitted by on October 30, 2008 - 9:00am. "Grey's" Melissa George gives scant details about her new bisexual characterAs we've reported, Melissa George joins the cast of Grey's Anatomy on Nov. 13 as Sadie, a bisexual intern and old, close friend of Meredith's. Just how close they were back in the day is the question on everyone's minds.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, George tries to shed some light on Sadie and her upcoming episodes. WARNING: Minor spoilers ahead. And by "spoilers," I mean some character backstory, some plot points that raise more questions then they answer, and a lot of hypothesizing and "They haven't told me," quotes on George's part. George said of Sadie: "She's a girl that walks on the wild side… I'm dying to know why she behaves so recklessly. Anyone who behaves like that has to have a lot of issues." No, it's not a comedy about the governor of Alaska, because who would watch something like that?
The pilot is actually for a proposed series called The Amazing Mrs. Novak, a drama about a wife and mom who works in a supermarket, and her inexplicable rise from suburban obscurity to New Jersey's governor's mansion. I don't know about you, but I don't want the person in charge of the second wealthiest state in America to have a stained Shop Rite vest hanging in her closet. The pilot stars Amy Pietz (Aliens in America) as the stupendously underqualified Trish Novak, and Gina Torres (Alias, Firefly) as her running mate for lieutenant governor. Kissing Jessica Stein's Scott Cohen will play Novak's campaign manager. Submitted by on October 24, 2008 - 10:00am. Jane Lynch is in high demandThe most frequently spotted lesbian in show business isn't Lindsay Lohan — it's in-demand, workaholic actor, Jane Lynch.
According to imdb.com, Lynch's new film, Spring Breakdown, which also stars Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch and Parker Posey, is due out this month. Spring Breakdown is not your typical co-eds in bikinis kegger. Poehler, Dratch and Posey play thirty-something dork friends who never had their cool moment in the sun. When one of them is sent to keep an eye on her boss's (Lynch as a conservative Senator) daughter during spring break, the trio decides it's never too late to have a misspent youth.
Or, a prolonged one. (When mine is over, I'll let you know.) Amy, Rachel, Parker and Jane. It's almost too much funny. And yet, the film is going straight to DVD, and not to a theater near you. Alyson Hannigan announces she's pregnantPeople magazine reported this morning that Alyson Hannigan and husband Alexis Denisof (Angel, Buffy) are expecting their first child, according to Hannigan's rep.
The Willow-Wesley spawn is due to enter this dimension this coming spring. As any real Buffy fan will tell you, Hannigan and Denisof met on the set during Season 3, when Watcher Wesley Wyndham-Pryce transferred to Sunnydale to keep a persnickety eye on that juvenile delinquent slash Slayer, Faith (Eliza Dushku). After a spell of bad timing (they were both dating other people) and Hannigan's adherence to some silly rule against dating people she worked with, the couple finally got together when Denisof's character was moved from her show to the Buffy spin-off, Angel.
Thank goodness for crossover episodes and low budget films like Beyond City Limits. Dating someone you work with? No. Working with someone you're dating? Sure! It's a fine line. "9 to 5" is Broadway boundThe 1980 feminist musical film Nine to Five, which starred Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton, has been newly adapted for the stage, and will be hitting the Great White Way in April 2009 as 9 to 5: The Musical.
The Broadway-bound show stars Allison Janney (Hairspray, Juno, The Hours, The West Wing) as office manager, Violet Newstead, and theater veterans, Stephanie J. Block (Wicked, The Boy From Oz) as new hire, Judy Bernly; and Megan Hilty (Wicked, Ugly Betty, Shrek the Third) as the well-endowed "backwoods Barbie" Doralee Rhodes. Currently running as a tryout to sold-out audiences in Los Angeles, the play captures the film's farcial, grown-up girl power attitude perfectly and no wonder: The two woman responsible for the film's original success: Grammy winner, Dolly Parton and out lesbian writer, Patricia Resnick created the theatrical version. In an interview with Center Theater Group, Resnick said, "Women are the only majority/minority," and added, "In some ways, things are worse [now]." Submitted by on October 20, 2008 - 2:00pm. "She Likes Girls 3" coming soon on DVDNo, it's not porn, but it is yet another great example of self-explanatory film titles. She Likes Girls 3 is, in fact, the third installment of the popular lesbian shorts compilation series from Wolfe Video.
I'm not exactly sure who the "She" is in the title, but we have a lot in common — I also like three girls in shorts. Oh, wait... Set for a Dec. 2 release, SLG3 contains eight short films by lesbian directors Guinevere Turner (Go Fish, The L Word), T.M. Scorzafava (Gillery's Little Secret), Erin Greenwell (Big Dreams in Little Hope), Cassandra Nicolaou (Show Me), and Roberta Marie Munroe (Dani and Alice), among others. The collection casts a wide net across our little lesbian pond — each short explores a different aspect of our lives: sex toys as gifts, relationships in small towns, bad hair choices, the ultimate excuse for standing up a date, and of course, hot lesbian vampires. That about sums up my weekend, how about you? Submitted by on October 17, 2008 - 1:00pm. "Grey's Anatomy" new "bisexual intern" is coming in November — with a secretIf the crumbs of the Callica love affair on Grey's Anatomy aren't satisfying your appetite for girl-loving content, help is on the way. Melissa George (Alias, Mulholland Dr.) will be joining the staff of Seattle Grace as a bisexual intern on Nov. 6.
But — spoiler alert! — it turns out Melissa's character has a past with another Seattle Grace resident. Someone you'd probably never suspect. Submitted by on October 16, 2008 - 12:00pm. "Lesbian Vampire Killers" movie announces its new tag lineWhat's in a name? Well, if you're a movie, your title can mean box-office gold or puzzled looks from people standing in line at the local multiplex. Titles like Bitch Slap and Lesbian Vampire Killers, coming soon to a theater near you, make me crave popcorn and Raisinets, while others either evoke no reaction or leave me wondering what the hell the film is about. Operation Dumbo Drop sounds like another flawed plan from the Bush administration; 3:10 to Yuma is a bus schedule, as far as I'm concerned; I don't know Gigli, nor do I think I want to, and don't get me started on Free Willy. Meanwhile, self-explanation is a good thing. Lesbian Vampire Killers tells me all I need to know and now has a new tag line: "What more could you possibly want?"
Well, let's see. How about Naked Lesbian Vampire Killers? Or Naked Lesbian Vampire Killers With Enormous Breasts? Or Naked Lesbian Vampire Killers With Enormous Breasts Who Dig Writers? The film, which is due out March 2009, focuses on two hapless guys trapped in a Welsh town where all the women folk are under the thrall of a vampire curse. Apparently, there's a male sacrifice on the moors and a pack of evil lesbian vampires. There is a God. Submitted by on October 15, 2008 - 5:00pm. Jackie Warner's boot camp price tag is a killerThe holidays are just around the corner, and we all know what that means. Halloween brings those little chocolate bars and candy corn, Thanksgiving means heaps of stuffing and mashed potatoes, and December heralds a nonstop parade of candied yams, cookies and fruitcake. (And by "fruitcake," I mean Clay Aiken's Christmas album.) If you're one of the many people likely to put on a few pounds this winter, Jackie Warner, personal trainer, gym owner and star of Bravo TV's Work Out, wants you. Her website is now accepting applications for next year's boot camp, SkyLab. The price tag? Six thousand dollars.
Even if you don't lose any weight, your wallet will be much, much lighter. SkyLab, Jackie's patented, all-inclusive boot camp, runs from Jan. 10-17, 2009. If you're serious about getting in shape, be forewarned: There's a good chance you'll be surrounded by straight housewives from Ohio who are only there because they're crushing hard on Jackie.
And why wouldn't they? Fitness celesbian Jackie Warner is telegenic, tight and totally ready to make out with you outside the nearest bathroom.
Sorry, Rebecca, I couldn't resist. Will you ever live that down? Apparently not. Submitted by on October 15, 2008 - 1:30pm. Portia de Rossi returns to "Nip/Tuck" for Season 6Who's going to pay for all that vegan red velvet cake served at Ellen and Portia's wedding? Well, if the new promo for Season 6 of Nip/Tuck is any indication, Portia de Rossi isn't just sitting home writing thank-you cards and admiring her new lavender KitchenAid.
The promo, which can be seen on Portia's fan site, has a blink-and-you-missed-her clip of Ellen DeGeneres' wife reprising her role as Olivia Lord, the sexy acupuncturist who got all up in Julia McNamara's (Joely Richardson) meridian and helped her release some pent-up vital energies last season.
The brief glimpse offers no indication of how many episodes Portia will be in for Season 6 (which begins in January 2009), but suffice it to say, any screen time is a good time when a beautiful real-life lesbian plays a beautiful fictitious one. When talking last year about taking on the role of a lesbian, Portia told the UK's Daily Mail in an interview, "I had that one moment of, 'Does this mean I'll be typecast as a lesbian? And Ellen turned to me and said, 'So what?' And I thought, 'Oh, yeah, right, so what?'" Submitted by on October 14, 2008 - 12:00pm. Torchwood: I shagged an alienTorchwood, the hit spin-off of the everlasting British sci-fi series Doctor Who, has a very special episode this week. This Saturday, Torchwood team member, computer whiz and occasional odd-girl out Toshiko Sato has a close encounter of the lesbian kind. Set your DVRs, girls.
Feeling a little lonely and underappreciated, Tosh meets a sassy blond named Mary in, where else? A bar. Mary has a gift and a secret for Tosh, played with consistent awesomeness by Naoko Mori, whom you might not recognize as the actress who played Sarah, Saffy's friend on Absolutely Fabulous. Submitted by on October 19, 2007 - 12:46pm. Kissed by an alien on "Torchwood"Sci-fi fans probably already know a little BBC hit called Torchwood, a spin-off of the series Doctor Who. Torchwood (an anagram for Doctor Who, because yeah, they are that geeky), follows the adventures of an elite special ops team as they investigate alien phenomenon in the city of Cardiff, Wales — which, as any intergalatic tourist book will tell you, is the place to be if you're an alien looking for a time-space rift.
Now available on BBC America, the same broadcaster that brings shows from across the pond with names like Drunk on the Job and Love Me, Love My Doll (don't you just love the programming people at the BBC?), Torchwood doesn't offer just fast-paced stories, alien gadgetry and quippy dialogue delivered with neat-o accents. Because the show features a multi-omni-pan-whatever-sexual leader named Captain Jack, played by an openly out actor (John Barrowman), it's being recapped over on our brother site, AfterElton.com. But the story lines delve into very fluid ideas of sexuality for all the Torchwoodies. Take Episode 2, "Day One," for example. Submitted by on September 17, 2007 - 1:57pm. Susan Sarandon has lovely bonesLast week, it was announced that Oscar-winning actress, human rights activist and AfterEllen.com Hot 100 lister Susan Sarandon will play the role of Grandma Lynn in the film adaptation of Alice Sebold's novel The Lovely Bones. And what lovely bones they are.
The Lovely Bones tells the story of 14-year-old Susie, who, after being murdered by her neighbor, watches from heaven as her family deals with her death. Newcomer Saoirse Ronan will play Susie, with Ryan Gosling and Oscar winner Rachel Weisz as Susie's grief-stricken parents. Sarandon will play Susie's grandmother, who moves in with the family after the murder. The Lovely Bones will be directed by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings trilogy), who also directed Heavenly Creatures, the creepy 1994 film based on a notorious 1954 New Zealand murder committed by two teenage girls. The girls, Pauline (Melanie Lynskey) and Juliet (a young Kate Winslet), kill Pauline's mother when they learn she intends to separate them because their friendship seems just a tad obsessive. Guess she was right. Submitted by on August 2, 2007 - 2:37pm. Annie Lennox gets by with help from 23 friendsPop diva Annie Lennox announced recently that her fourth solo album, Songs of Mass Destruction, which drops October 2, will include one track featuring vocal contributions from 23 other female singers. Perhaps you've heard of some of them: Melissa Etheridge, Madonna, Sarah McLachlan, Celine Dion, Stacy Ferguson, Faith Hill, Pink, Dido, Gladys Knight, kd lang, Bonnie Raitt, Shakira, Joss Stone and KT Tunstall.
It's Lilith Fair compressed into four minutes and without the messy sunscreen. With 23 other stars, the song, a feminist anthem entitled, "Sing," could possibly be a truncated version of the title, "Sing, or Just Mouth the Words — No One's Gonna Know the Difference." Although it remains to be heard whether any one artist gets a line or two of her own, the cause is definitely worthwhile. "Sing" will benefit Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), a movement fighting for human rights, education and health care for those affected by and living with AIDS/HIV. There's another album already called Songs of Mass Destruction — a 1993 release by a Swedish duo called Devoid. But with songs like "Drug Womb" and "Go to Hell" on the Devoid album, I doubt there will be much confusion as to which one is Annie's. Submitted by on July 26, 2007 - 2:05pm. |
