Brothers and Sisters
The show also features some of the more interesting and appealing female characters on TV, which is probably one of the reasons I like it so much. Our brother site AfterElton.com did a really interesting interview with the show's creator, Jon Robin Baitz, in which he said: "Rachel [Griffiths], Calista and Sally [Field] — they're the anchors of the show… I was very interested from the get-go in an evolving feminine perspective and matriarchy. Part of it had [to do with] my rage at white American business and politics,†Baitz said, noting that major themes in the show will include what it means to be a feminist and the fate of women who seek power in light of what he refers to as “the smugness of men.†Okay, I'll admit it: he had me at "what it means to be a feminist". But can he keep this up without devolving into Desperate Housewives theatrics? Submitted by on October 22, 2006 - 7:52pm. |

Did everyone catch the big gay kiss on
I like seeing Calista back on TV, even if she is playing a big conservative.
Really?
I'm sorry, but I gave up on Brothers and Sisters after two episodes. I had high hopes because I am a fan of Sally Field and of Rachel Griffiths, as well as an admirer of thirtysomething when it was on. I found the family drama to be interesting but there are a couple of glaring problems with the show that I cannot get over:
1. I hate, hate, hate Calista Flockhart. Maybe it's the memory of Ally Mc"I'm a twit." Maybe it's that dippy look in her eye and that phony sweet voice. Maybe it's that she still needs to eat something. Maybe it's all that and so much more. I could stomach the show if it wasn't all about her. Furthermore, if she's younger than Rachel Griffiths, then I'm Laura Bush!
2. In this day and age, with the Bush administration ruining all that is good about America, this "Republicns are people too" focus of the show is superfluous. Let me have my entertainment without the reminder that Ann Coulter is allowed to live.
I'm glad that there is an intelligent show on the air that has positive gay characters. For that reason alone I want to like this show. I just can't watch a show that advances Calista Flockhart's career and the neo-con agenda at the same time.
Exactly. I also tried to watch for Sally Field and the gay brother, but because the Calista Flockhart character is so central, you have to identify with her to be able to enjoy the show. And there's no way I'm spending an hour of my week trying to identify with a dippy conservative who doesn't even have the excuse of being raised that way. In today's political climate, I have no patience for that sort of thing.
I see what you're saying, but the show devotes very little time on Calista's character, and even less on her politics - if it wasn't for the promos and her feud with her co-star, you might not even know her character was a conservative. So that part doesn't really bother me.
I watched the first 2 episodes and I actually found it funny that the creators of this show found the need to point out Calista being a Republican. I kind of felt that they are almost making it look like it is a sin to be a Republican. It was snubbed more on the show then the gay brother, which I thought was great. Now if they could just continue to point out how ridiculous being a Republican is then I would continue to watch the show.
Yes, this is one of my fave new shows so far. And I am loving the storyline between the
gay brother and his b/f. It's really cute and sweet.
