As the show was about to go to a commercial, a man in the crowd began to heckle Griffin and she responded with the comment, "Screw you. Why don't you get a job, buddy?" You know what, I don't go to your job and knock the d**** out of your mouth." Blogger Michael K on dlisted.com noted that the joke was originally told on the "GloboChem" skit on the HBO sketch comedy series, Mr. Show, but we have to give Griffin credit for making the most of a perfect opportunity. If you want to see the magic as it unfolds, watch the clip below. Submitted by on January 5, 2009 - 3:00pm. You Can't Take Them Anywhere! Switzerland (Part Two: Lucerne and Mt. Pilatus)In part two of trip to Switzerland, Bridget and I visit historic Lucerne, go in search of fondue and get a private tour of the amazing Museum Rosengart.
The lovely Ms. Angela Rosengart, whose family has been collecting art for generations, gave us a fascinating tour of the Museum, with a special focus on the work of Picasso. The Rosengart has one of the largest collections of Picasso's work in the world, and has an equally impressive collection of Paul Klee's work. Other artists represented there include Cézanne, Chagall, Kandinsky, Matisse, Miró, Modigliani, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, and Seurat. The museum itself is gorgeous and is a must-see when you go to Lucerne. While vising Lucerne, we also spent a day on Mt. Pilatus and got the royal treatment from our hilarious host, Colette Richter. Mt. Pilatus is simply awe-inspiring, the 7,000 foot high mountain is home to two aerial cableways, two hotels, seven restaurants, the world's steepest cogwheel railway and central Switzerland's biggest suspension rope park. Most importantly (to me), you can ride a toboggan on a mile long track at breakneck speed or a more sensible leisurely place — the choice is your own! We aimed for a speed somewhere in the middle when we had our turn, and we shot the footage to prove it.
When we weren't playing alpenhorns on the mountain, feeding the swans or trolling the streets of Lucerne in search of fondue, we were relaxing at the Hotel Seeburg, with a gorgeous You Can't Take Them Anywhere! Lucerne and Mt. Pilatus, Switzerland

When they're not busy shaking their groove things, they discuss Claire's experience as a dancer at The Dinah, Pit Bulls, Ru Paul and competing with straight girls for lesbian dance gigs. Then Claire takes off her earrings and all hell breaks loose in an awesomely violent pillow fight. Let's hope they're both insured. Brunch With Claire Lussier

You Can't Take Them Anywhere! Zurich, SwitzerlandIn our latest European adventure, Bridget and I take a tour of the gorgeous country of Switzerland. Because we were able to pack so much into our trip, we're dividing this installment of YCTTA into multiple episodes. Our first stop is Zürich. The largest city in Switzerland, Zürich is known for excellent shopping, gastronomical delights, and a rich cultural scene. Before we arrived there, we'd heard that Zürich had been ranked as the city with the highest quality of life anywhere in the world for several years running. As we explored the city, it was easy to see why.
We had a brief but action-packed stay in Zürich, which included lots of shopping (the Freitag building, made of recycled materials, was one of the most interesting shops we visited), dining on delicious foods (the vegetarian restaurant, Hiltl, was our favorite), and exploring every nook and cranny of the beautiful historic city with the assistance of our incredibly well-informed guide (courtesy of Zürich Tourism). In our down time, we enjoyed our very chic accommodations at The Helmhaus Hotel. We devoted a whole day to a side adventure at Zoo Zürich, where our brilliant and hilarious (but, unfortunately, camera-shy) guide gave us a fascinating tour of the Zoo's exhibit on homosexuality in the animal kingdom. Thanks to her, we learned a lot about the gay habits of a variety of creatures. As the saying goes, we are everywhere! We hope you'll enjoy the video devoted to our visit to Zürich, and if you have any suggestions for where we should go on future trips back there, let us (and everyone else) know! Pin-up legend and pop culture icon Bettie Page has diedBettie Page, the legendary pin-up girl of the 1950's who helped usher the bondage-aesthetic into the mainstream, has died after suffering a heart attack last week in Los Angeles. She was 85.
Page was born in Nashville, Tennessee and grew up with aspirations to be an actress. A young military bride, she lived in cities across the world until her divorce, and settled in New York in the late 1940s. There she began to support herself by modeling for the erotic photographs for which she would eventually become famous. Page posed for pictures and made erotic films (none of which contained nudity or explicit sexual content) until 1959, when she converted to Christianity. Even those who don't know her name would still recognize her iconic image from refrigerator magnets, lunchboxes or any of the countless other pieces of Page merchandise available today.
And of course, any fan of the rockabilly look or Dita Von Teese can see the influence of Page on their aesthetics. In the biography from her official website, Page's move from underground star to pop culture icon is made apparent. The site states:
Page's cultural impact is also evidenced by the lengthy obituary for her on Time.com, written by Richard Corliss. In it, he calls her, "the Garbo of bondage movies," and writes that Page was the "sole creator of her myth; she was her own auteur." Sadly, as is often the case with female "sex symbols" (such as Monroe), a long history of sexual abuse was an integral part of Page's story, and she battled both physical and mental illness throughout her life. Page's story was brought to the screen by out lesbian producer Christine Vachon and executive-producer and co-writer Guinevere Turner in the 2005 biopic The Notorious Bettie Page, starring Gretchen Mol. Here's the trailer for The Notorious Bettie Page:
In 2009, the documentary Bettie Page Reveals All, by filmmaker Mark Mori, is set to be released. There will be a private service and burial at Westwood Cemetery in Los Angeles on Dec. 16. Wanda Sykes (briefly) calls in gay to "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno"Last night on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Wanda Sykes made her first appearance on the show since publicly coming out as gay and married in November.
After Leno announced her name, she took her sweet time coming to the stage. Once there, she explained that she was "calling in gay" and giving Leno and the audience "a little taste of what it would be like if I didn't show up." This was a nod to December 10 being International Human Rights Day and "Day Without A Gay," in which LGBT people were encouraged to stay home from work and donate their time to gay rights service instead. Clad in a t-shirt bearing a rainbow-colored fist, Sykes joked with Leno about her impromptu public coming out at a Prop 8 rally in Las Vegas ("so much for 'what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!'") and thanked him for always being "supportive and respectful" of her sexuality. They also talked about the ridiculousness of the idea that "gay rights" are "special rights." You can likely find the episode posted in its entirety tomorrow on hulu.com's Tonight Show page, but, for now, watch a clip from the show below: As funny as her appearance was, the clip above ends on a low-note as far as I'm concerned. Wanda's comment about how Prop 8 was based on the paranoid notion that gay marriages could affect heterosexual marriages devolved into a tired bit by the gay-friendly Leno about how lesbian sex is titillating for men. Secretly wondering if any of them are true? Us too. This week, Dara and I talk about the top 10 stereotypes about lesbians and deliberate on their validity. From handiness to angriness, we traverse the landscape of lesbian mythologies. Along the way, we take a break for a brief musical interlude.
Naturally, no list of lesbian stereotypes would be complete without mention of sports, The L Word, and U-Hauls. And, perhaps stereotypically, we process those things too. What stereotypes annoy or amuse you most? Let us know! Dara & Karman's Hit List "Lesbian Stereotypes" (Episode 11)

TV Alert: Wanda Sykes on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" tonightOut actress and comedian Wanda Sykes will appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno tonight on NBC. Of course, she'll probably be promoting her television show, The New Adventures of Old Christine, but she and Leno might just have a few other things to talk about. After all, it's the first time Sykes has been a guest on the show again since she came out as a married lesbian in November during a gay rights rally in Las Vegas. At the rally, she told the crowd that she felt "attacked" by the passage of Proposition 8, and declared, "I'm proud to be a woman. I'm proud to be a black woman, and I'm proud to be gay."
In previous appearances on The Tonight Show, Sykes talked around issues like gay marriage, but did so without naming herself a lesbian (though Sykes has long been out in her live stand-up performances). Now that she's out, it's safe to say she'll be a target for the same boring questions about domestic life that Leno would ask any of his other guests. Here's a clip of Sykes's last appearance on the show back in September of this year, in which she talks about the (then) upcoming presidential election: ' How often do you get to hear any woman declare herself a feminist on television? And I love the idea of Wanda Sykes as Secretary of State. If Obama hadn't already picked the right woman for the job, I would forward him the Leno clip for consideration. Watch Sykes on Leno tonight at 11:35 p.m. EST. Submitted by on December 10, 2008 - 3:00pm. Fa-la-la-la-lesbian?On the Tuesday, Dec. 16 episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Britney Spears drops by, wearing a few extra layers of clothing, to go caroling with Ellen.
In search of some good old-fashioned fun, Britney and Ellen reportedly don their gay apparel and take their show door-to-door.
No word yet on what timeless tunes they'll be serenading, but I know my favorite holiday songs are those given a modern spin. I'm thinking that maybe "Frosty the Womanizer," "Walking in a Toxic Wonderland," or maybe "I'm a Slave 4 The Little Drummer Boy," would be some good ones. What request would you make if they came knocking at your door? Submitted by on December 9, 2008 - 4:00pm. Brunch with Karey Dornetto (Brunch with Bridget, Episode 42)This week, Bridget talks to the talented, irreverent, and sometimes neauseous comedian, Karey Dornetto. Karey is also a writer who has worked on such television shows as Arrested Development, South Park, and The Jamie Kennedy Experiment. But you may know her best in her turn as The L Word creator Ilene Chaiken in her short film, Hi, I'm Ilene... It was a surprise hit with mountain lions everywhere!
The girls talk about Karey's latest short, The Blast, Karey's book 101 Ways to Shave Your Ass, and just for kicks, Karey and Bridget have a "gross-off" to see who can tell the most disgusting story. The prize? Someone else's underwear. In this scenario, it's safe to say that everyone loses. Brunch With Karey Dornetto

Anna Faris to star in two new comediesScary Movie franchise vet Anna Faris has two new projects in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The first is an untitled Paramount film described in Hollywood Reporter as "a female buddy comedy following two estranged sisters who team up to land a husband." Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, the women who wrote Faris's 2008 vehicle, House Bunny, will be scripting this film as well. In case you missed it, House Bunny (which Faris also executive produced) is a comedy about a former Playboy bunny who gets evicted from Hef's Mansion and finds new "work" as the house mother of a sorority full of unpopular coeds. There she transforms dorky smart girls into hoochie girls like her! Dara & Karman's Hit List: "Worst Couples" (Episode 10)Before the Thanksgiving break, we spent an entire episode discussing our favorite couples, real or fictional, in popular culture The usual suspects cropped up, and you helpfully gave us plenty of feedback on those we forgot to include. Well, as the lauded poet Bret Michaels once said, every rose has its thorn. That's why this week we follow up with part deux of our couples-oriented Hit List, this time devoted to the very worst couples in pop culture.
Some of our choices are bound to be controversial, as we know how much you all love your lesbian tv hearththrobs (cough, Spashley, cough), but we think you will heartily agree with some of our other choices. And some people on our list, like, oh, I don't know, Vince Vaughn, are so unappealing to us that we don't like them with anybody. Also in this episode, when we're not talking smack about people who've never done anything to us, we toss around some ideas for our new company, Fatty Dent Productions. At this point, the only things we know for sure are that our office will be in the Valley and our receptionist will wear lucite heels (and not much else). Otherwise, the possibilities are endless. But back to business. Who are your least favorite couples? Let us know who you think should have made our list! Dara & Karman's Hit List "Worst Couples" (Episode 10)

Folk music pioneer Odetta dies at 77Odetta, the Grammy-nominated folk singer who influenced a generation of folk singers, has died from heart failure in New York at the age of 77.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Odetta was raised in Los Angeles and began opera training as a teen. She toured nationally in musical theater, and while in San Francisco became involved with the folk music movement of the 1950s. She recorded several albums in the 1950's, including Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues (1956), At the Gate of Horn (1957) and her 1963 record, Odetta Sings Folk Songs was a best-selling folk album. In a 1978, folk legend Bob Dylan told Playboy magazine that Odetta's Ballads and Blues album was one of his key musical influences. He told the magazine that after he first heard her music, "Right then and there, I went out and traded my electric guitar and amplifier for an acoustical guitar."
In her Time magazine obituary, Richard Corliss wrote, "If a line could be drawn from Bessie Smith to Janis Joplin, from Mahalia Jackson to Maria Callas, it would have to go through Odetta." Submitted by on December 3, 2008 - 4:00pm. |
