Dolly Parton: Better get to listnin'

It's a big political year in the U.S., and after the Democratic Convention this summer, I'll be stumping for either Hillary or Obama. But in the meantime, I'm stumping for somebody else — Dolly Parton. Now, Dolly is not running for President — or any political office, for that matter — but she does have a campaign to get back on country radio, and she needs our support.

Dolly's certainly doing her part. After 10 years with no major label support, she decided to release a mainstream country album, Backwoods Barbie, on her own label, Dolly Records. As she put it, “I'm looking at it like an investment. I thought, 'I've made enough money. I can afford to invest a little in myself.”

She's doing plenty of press, and she'll be a mentor on American Idol next week! She'll be performing a song from her new album — I suspect it will be the first single, “Better Get to Livin',” rather than the second single, “Jesus and Gravity” — and the contestants will perform Dolly Parton classics. This could be scary, but it will give her plenty of exposure and likely drive album sales.

If you haven't seen it, check out the video for “Better Get to Livin',” featuring Amy Sedaris.

And I'm trying to do my part as well. I bought the album immediately upon release, thereby helping it to reach No. 2 on Billboard during its second week. I'm going to see her in concert next month. Yay! And I'm making my non-country-loving girlfriend listen to the album, too. And she's enjoying it! Although part of what she's enjoying is watching me dance around the house singing:

I'm just a backwoods Barbie,
too much makeup, too much hair.
Don't be fooled by thinkin' that the goods are not all there.

Don't let these false eyelashes lead you to believe that
I'm as shallow as I look, 'cause I run true and deep.

But her stated goal is not just album sales, it's country radio — which dropped her like a hot potato in the '90s. When she lost mainstream support, the ever-resourceful Dolly adapted and shifted to roots music, releasing a trilogy of “bluegrass” albums (I put bluegrass in quotes because the third album included a cover of “Stairway to Heaven”) followed by a cover album, Those Were the Days. They were all fantastic albums, but none got airplay on stations busy playing Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler. So, now it's time to return a little classic country style to mainstream country radio.

If you'd like to request Dolly on your local country radio station (in the United States) but you don't know how to contact them, another set of artists who cannot get much play on country radio (remember the Dixie Chicks?) have already done the work for you. They published a comprehensive list of country radio stations on their website when they released Taking the Long Way a couple of years ago. If there was a country radio in New York City, I'd be calling. But there's not. Alas. So, I'll tell other people to call.

Heed Dolly's cry and “Get Dolly Parton back on the radio!”

    Looking forward to her tour!

Well, after a tour delay due to "back problems" caused by self-admitted "front" problems, I'm looking forward to seeing "Backwoods Barbie" in concert myself! Honestly, I've never seen Dolly live in concert, but I understand her concerts are an event to behold, complete with an audience as diverse as it is large! If you haven't heard her CD, be sure to check it out! Dolly rocks, even at 62!!!

Dolly Parton = Country Music To Me

I was never a big fan of country music till I couldn't stop litening to 'Travelin Thru' from the 'Transamerica' soundtrack. Dolly Parton brought me country music and now I can't go a day without listening to something from that genre of music. If I lived in America I would be straight to my phone asking for Dolly songs. But I don't so I hope she can get back on top where she belongs. No country radio station is that without at lest some Dolly playing at lest once a day.

    dolly

I actually work at a country music station in Pittsburgh and Dolly was recently at our station not that long ago when she first released her single for you better get to livin. We're playing her single here and getting good responses from it. Shes such a sweet person and she's very genuine. I wish her all the best!

But if you want more dolly, call up your local station and request it...the more requests it gets, the more spins it will get.

    Radio

That's great to hear that she's getting airplay and that people are responding. I'd love for her to get the kind of exposure and attention, again, that she warrants. I wish we had country radio in NY.

    Busy Lady

She has also written or is still writing music and lyrics for the musical for 9 to 5. This is going to be in a short run in L.A. this fall, I imagine with the hopes of taking it to Broadway. The musical is currently set to star the lovely Allison Janney will be playing Violet Newsted(the role Lili Tomlin played) and my favorite Elphaba, Stephanie J Block as Judy Bernly(the role Jane Fonda played). I am very excited!!!!!!

    Need some help

I am a huge fan of Dolly Parton. I will keep this brief growing up in TN kids were so mean to me. After being picked on and made fun of all day long I would just come home so upset. One day I even thought of commiting suicide. Thank god I did and would never consider it again. But I was very close and my inspiration was Dolly. She had a song called Family and she mentions in the song some of our family is gay. I thought Dolly knows gays I am gay..therefore I love Dolly. She is a one of a kind music angel. ..So to the help part my local country station www.country925.com will not play dolly's new song I assume maybe because I am the only one calling. But I call all the time. Can everyone please help me out and give them a call to see if we can Dolly on the air. I think if they would just give her a chance they would be surprised!!

    Country 92.5

I spent much of the 90s listening to that station. (I used to live in New Haven and commuted to Hartford.) How sad that they won't play Dolly.

I've tried calling a few times, but keep getting a busy signal. I'll keep trying.
