News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

TV characters you'd date

I don't think too much about dating, these days. I've haven't been single for a while and have no desire or plan to be single again. But when I saw Entertainment Weekly's list of “TV Characters You'd Date,” I asked my girlfriend and a couple of friends to play the who-would-you-date game. My girlfriend chimed in immediately with Dana Fairbanks. (I was not surprised. She's mentioned her before.) One friend led with Olivia Benson (Law and Order: SVU) and followed up with Tasha Williams (The L Word) and Diane Russell (NYPD Blue). The other shared that Kris Munroe (Charlie's Angels) was her first love (and the one against which all subsequent loves have been measured). And then she threw in Mary Bradford (Eight Is Enough) and C.J. Lamb (L.A. Law) for good measure..

And, of course, I made my own list. Which got very long. Here are but a few.

Liz Lemon — 30 Rock

This one is so obvious that I almost feel stupid explaining it. Smart is hot. Funny is hot. And hot is hot. Even though she might eventually send me looking for my own “lady Steadman,” I would not pass up the chance to date Liz Lemon.

Alice Pieszecki — The L Word

Once again, smart + funny + hot = an obvious choice. She's out and proud, and I like that in a woman. Alice did, however, have a lot of competition for my affections. On pure physical attraction (plus major smarts), I'd probably go with Bette. But she cheats, and I don't like that in a woman. Then there's Tasha. Swoon. And Carmen. Swoon. But I think I would laugh most with Alice, so there you go.

Alex Cabot — Law and Order: SVU

I surprised myself with this one — and I'm still fighting it a little. I have very deep feelings for Olivia Benson, but when I thought about whether I'd actually want to date her, I realized she's a little too tortured for me, and I flashed to Alex — who I've always liked and who seems more stable and smarter than Olivia. (The only problem is that she's in the witness protection program.)

A friend asked why I had to choose between them — after all, it's my game. And she has a point. But somehow it just seemed wrong to date more then one of them, even when it's fake. They know each other! I would, however, happily step aside if they wanted to date each other.

Dr. Kim Legaspi — ER

I initially thought about Abby on ER, but then quickly flashed to the lovely Dr. Kim Legaspi. She was out and compassionate and lovely. (Have I mentioned that she was lovely?) My girlfriend dismissively said that every lesbian who's ever fallen in love with her therapist fell for Dr. Legaspi — and she may be right — but still, she was lovely. And unlike Dr. Weaver, I would not be afraid to let anyone know that she was my girlfriend.

Jane Lane — Daria

Normally, I shy away from high school girl crushes, but somehow it's less creepy when they're cartoon characters. Jane was creative, witty and quite attractive — as cartoon characters go. Plus, aside from her thing with Tom, she wasn't too boy-crazy.

Teddy Reed — Sisters

I try to avoid the troubled, tortured alcoholics, but Teddy had such a great smile and was just so insanely, incredibly hot. Plus she was creative, had an interesting family and did mostly get her life together. And she was hot.

Andrea Zuckerman — Beverly Hills 90210

The smart ones always do it for me. I thought Andrea was much more attractive than Brenda, Kelly or Donna — at least during the West Beverly years. (And I could justify the high school girl crush because Gabrielle Carteris was 29 when the show first aired in 1990.)

C.J. Lamb — L.A. Law

Again ... hot, smart, out. Duh!

Jamie Sommers — The Bionic Woman

Michelle Ryan certainly had the body, but my heart belongs to the original Jamie Sommers (Lindsay Wagner). She fought for all that was right and true, was incredibly attractive and was amazingly strong (probably tireless, really). Not that I'd want to objectify her, but it seems like it would be pretty cool to have a bionic girlfriend. Plus, she had that bionic dog!

Bailey Quarters — WKRP in Cincinnati

Bailey was a little timid and shy and young, but she was also smart, appealing and ambitious. She definitely had a nerdy, dorky thing going on. I do, of course, have to ignore the icky thing she had going on with Dr. Johnny Fever.

And I could go on. But enough is enough.

So who would you date?

    Abbey...

    From NCIS. Yes, please!

    KineticStillness's picture

    You take Abbey...

...I'll take Ziva!  That woman is hot as hell and she can fight and be all vulnerable while still being strong.  Plus, that hair and those eyes and that body.

Here are a couple of pics...but remember, SHE'S MINE!  ;)

PS:  Don't you totally think she needs to play Salma Hayek's younger sister?!

    Hollywood Marie's picture

    Re: Ziva

I've never seen the show or this actor, but does anybody know if she is Sephardic?  Between the comparison to Salma Hayek and the Star of David around her neck in the second picture, I have to wonder.  Just curious because Natalie Portman and I are lonely over here in the Sephardic corner.  And 'cause visibility matters to me, too, especially when the ladies are that hot.
    Xaverie's picture

    I'm pretty sure the actress

I'm pretty sure the actress is Catholic. At the very least, she was born in Chile and raised in America so she's not actually Israeli. The Star of David is just part of her character.
    Hollywood Marie's picture

    Interesting, but...

Sephardic Jews are from South American countries, too.  We all started out in Spain, and there are Sephardic Jews in many Spanish-speaking countries (which would explain the dominant language being Ladino, which is a combination of Hebrew and Spanish). She's probably Catholic, though, and I should just shut up and be happy that at least we have Natalie.  Sigh.  Natalie.
    Niuxita's picture

    YES!

Haha I thought I was the only one who saw the Salma Hayek resemblance but yes, I totally think they should play family. Plus, both of them on the same frame would be entirely too much pretty and hot.
    mumps's picture

    its gotta be...

either faith from buffy, she has the whole mysterious bad girl thing going on...

or peyton sawyer from One Tree Hill, smart, funny, creative, edgy, HOT!

but there just some of the ones u didnt mention.....my number one to date would be Alice

    GayLo's picture

    oh yes

Faith is a good choice! i mean, she'd probably love me and leave me, but i think i'd be ok with that.

What about Anya? i mean, pre-dead anya (sad face!) was hilarious, witty, good with money, cute, hot... i could go on. i always though she and Halfrek had once had a drunken fling. I have a very active imagination.

    clumsyabi's picture

    Hmmm...

In alphabetical order as I am that way inclined (by last name, obviously):

    Dr. Allison Cameron

    Spencer Carlin

    Lorelai Gilmore

    Veronica Mars

    Carmen de la Pica Morales

    Alice Pieszecki

    Willow Rosenberg

There's plenty more but those are my absolute favourites... (If I dated men, Dr. House would definitely be on there!)

    thescifibard's picture

    Oh the possibilities!!!!

Oh of COURSE Carmen de la Pica Morales!!!! You'd be insane NOT to! ;-)

This is a dodgy topic for me, cause whenever someone asks me who I fancy etc, I can ONLY think of characters from tv shows and no one in real life at all! lol! ('cept my lovely girlfriend of course...)

But my list would HAVE to include these yummiest of lovelies:

    Samantha Carter (Stargate SG1)

    Monica Reyes (X-Files)

    Laura Roslin (Battlestar Galactica)

    Tara Maclay (Buffy)

    Monica Geller/Bing (Friends)

Liz Sherman (Hellboy - aww, can't I have a film character TOO? PLEEEASE?)

    Abby Lockhart (ER)

7 of 9 (Star Trek: Voyager - just think of all you could 'teach' her *weg*)

Gabrielle (Xena - but ONLY if she wore that red ensemble from the latter seasons)

Oh, and lastly, that vampirey woman who tied Alice up from the ceiling in in The L Word, can't remember which season or her name, but she would be hhhhhawt!!!! ;-)

    Clonchi's picture

    huh

I liked your choices!! I would date Alice too, but I think I have to go with Dr. Callie Torres from Greys Anatomy. Again: sexy, smart, funny!
    Nelfy's picture

    callie torres

I soo agree with you. even though alice would be my first choice - she values friendships as much as I do - callie would be a clear second choice. she's so hot and I can't stand the storylines they write for her, she really deserves better.

    purpledawnie's picture

    Number one would ABSOLUTELY

Number one would ABSOLUTELY have to be Alice Pieszecki, but of others who aren't on the list i would go for Abby Lockart (maura tierney) from ER (she just gets hotter and hotter every year!)

    maura tierneymaura tierney

and Donna (natalie casey) from 'two pints of lager and a packet of crisps'...totally funny + hot, and just cool! natalie caseynatalie casey

    bittybuffy's picture

I am SO with you on Donna

I am SO with you on Donna from two pints purpledawnie! She's hilarious and hot. And Dr. Abby, I LOVE Maura Tierney!

I'd also have to go for Kennedy from Buffy, Piper from Charmed, Willow from Buffy, Veronica Mars, Max from Dark Angel, and Sarah Conner (the Lena Headey version.) What can I say, freakishly strong women do it for me!

    mumps's picture

    cant believe i forgot.......

Lorelai Gilmore ....... she'd be so much fun to date
    llandorian's picture

    "13" in House,MD

First that came to my mind!

    And than Dr. Lisa Cuddy

    And than Dr. Allison Cameron

    face_of_love's picture

    ER

Laura Innes "Dr.Weaver" she's beautiful!!!! I think Dr. Legaspi was hard on her when she left her. She wasn't nice and lovely at all. Due to the fact that it was really a hard process for Dr. Weaver to come out in her 40s So my answer is too short: Laura Innes
    Katicita's picture

    Ty!!! finally someone who

Ty!!! finally someone who isn't fooled by Legaspi's charms :p

I'd date Kerry as well :)

    My other picks would be:

    Lorelai Gilmore

    Tina Kennard

    Serena Vanderwoodsen

    Blair Waldorf

Tyra Banks (what? doesnt she count as a character?:p)

    Sarah Connor

Cameron (yes, i'd date a cyborg and im not ashamed to admit it! :))

    michele emily's picture

    Ah, Cameron...

I would date Cameron, too. I might jump ship if she ever booked us a trip to Tahiti, though.

Also, River Tam and Kaylee Frye.

I think I could even bring myself to date Emma Delauro.

Fun one, soo many to choose

Ace, I have to agree with Dana Fairbanks, she was the first one to pop in my head when I read the main page of who would you date.  Funny, sexy, clueless and beautifully charming, *SWOON*  But I have to agree with Alex Cabot too, my second choice which you clearly agree with, ahhh.

Since you chose an animated character and I'm a world class geek of anime, my animated choice would be Natsuki Kuga/Kruger from an anime *points to avitar*.  She's determined, hot headed, a fighter, drives a motorcycle, a great friend and extremely attractive and knows it but doesn't abuse it.  So great.  So sad I know.

If I went for someone in an older TV show, definitely Jo from The Facts of Life, again my geekdom is out front and center.  Who didn't have a crush on Jo in the 80's?  Though I could do without some of the hairstyles she had LOL.  Strong yet vulnerable, had a motorcycle (see a trend?), made Jordasche jeans look great even if you didn't have an ass, hilarious and incredibly intelligent (she was Valedictorian of her graduating class after all).

But if I had to choose, which there are a lot out there, Simone Lahbib's character Helen Stewart in Bad Girls.  She makes me swoon 10 times over.  I really don't need to explain why, LOL.

"Normal is not something to aspire to, it's something to get away from."

    Ace14's picture

    Jo

One of my friends asked me whether I was going to include Jo. I thought about it but decided that, back in the day, I wanted to be Jo more than I wanted to date her. :-)

I also gave serious thought to Helen Stewart (and Nikki Wade!) but decided to keep the number on my list somewhat manageable.

    SportyLady's picture

    Jo Cont...

Ha-ha, I agree about wanting to be Jo when I was younger and she did the tomboy thing so well and I was a tomboy then too so it made me like her even more.  And her shot-downs she made to Blair made me fall in love at the age of 10, LOL.

It was a difficult choice between Helen and Nikki, I almost mentioned both myself.  But I'll blame scribegrrrl for my ridiculous swoonage over Helen, the rolling of the tongue behind her teeth, *swoon again*.  Never really paid attention until I read a recap.  :)

"Normal is not something to aspire to, it's something to get away from."

    Katrina1122's picture

    Anime Geek too

Being an Aime geek as well I would have to say I totally ageree with you on Natsuki. Love Natsuki. Since I am talking anime Shizuma Hanazono - Strawberry Panic Hottness... yeah I know geek.

Dana - Who wouldn't date Dana she was just amazing

Xena and Gabby - because there is no way you would be able to date just one of them.

    Piper - Charmed

    Alice - L word

    Faith - BTVS

    Saint - Sugar Rush

    Nikki - Bad girls

    Ashley - South of Nowhere

    Sam McPherson - Popular

    Thirteen - House

Seven of Nine - Star Trek: Voyager

I think that I will stop here because the list could go on and on.

    Marnie Twigg's picture

    Abs and Attitude? I'm Sold

Bette Porter or Xena...tall, dark, type A personalities are completely my downfall. Although Bette's wuss-tastic attitude when it comes to relationships has largely caused her to be replaced by Capt. Tasha Williams in my affections. Her whole officer and a gentleman attitude, her uniform, her secret vulnerability...her triceps. And I will always have a soft-spot for Willow Rosenberg. Incredibly smart, well-read and funny as hell. Plus the whole firey red-head thing doesn't hurt.

    in no particular order except...

#1 always - CJ Cregg - The West Wing

Liz Lemon - 30 Rock (close fight for #1)

Addison Montgomery - They early Grey's Addison, not the transition to Private Practice and PP Addison.

Bonnie - Knight Rider (the original)

Last season Alice would've been on here, but she lost me this season w/ her hidden camera-ness.

I'm sure I'll think of more as the day goes on...

    DigitalAngel's picture

    Yes, a true number one

CJ Cregg from The West Wing is my number one too.

    Also making the cut are:

    Dr Temperance Brennan from Bones

    Dana Scully from The X-Files

Calleigh Duquesne from CSI Miami (and the West Wing)

    Mariska Hargitay- from SVU

    Rocktoddy's picture

    Willow, Let's Go!

To get the most obvious out of the way first, I'd definitely date Willow Rosenberg from BtVS. Big honkin' duh there! Girl is smart, girl is hot.

Then lemme see, hmm... who'd I date?

Caitlin Dowd from Cashmere Mafia to help her get over Alicia! I love smart, quirky and succesful women.

I used to be so into Claire Bennet from Heroes, but last season I started digging Monica Dawson, so I'd date the New Orleans beauty instead of the blond cheerleader from Texas (pshaw, fly-boy is boring anyway...).

Robin Scherbatsky from HIMYM! (Heh, I never knew her last name was spelled like that!)

Oooh Sportylady, Natsuki! Good choice! Can I get Shizuru then? I really like the notion that Shizuru seems to be the dominant one in a relationship, and I am AAAALLL for that! Plus that Kyoto-ben accent! *SWOON*

    SportyLady's picture

    Yes

Haha, yes!  Someone else knows the beauty of Shizuru and Natsuki on this site, thank god for another anime geek, LOL.   I don't know if you can have Shizuru, I like very much as well, I also agree about the *SWOON*...I do it too over Natsuki.  I'm actually writing a fanfic on the two, huzzzaaahhh for writers block at the moment.

I also agree with your choice over Caitlin Dowd, very nice choice.  One of two reason's I enjoyed the show, though they screwed up her storyline.  *sighs*

    I'll probably forget some

I'll probably forget some important ones but here it goes:

    1. George frorm Dead Like Me - my gaydar always beeped for her, and when I saw her in The Truth About Jane it did it for me...
    2. Ashley from SoN (snif, can't believe it's being cancelled)
    3. Spencer from SoN, let's face it, she's become hotter and hotter as she came out and proud
    4. Willow from Buffy, no explanations needed....
    5. Mischa Barton in Once and Again, my favorite of her roles.
    6. Claire Danes in My So Called Life

Wow, seems only the teenagers made the list...
    7. I always had a thing for Lara Flyn Boyle in the Practice
    8. Kate from Lost, of course...
    9. Sara Sidle from CSI
    10. Catherine Willows from CSI

and that's all I could remember right now....

    Bodhi's picture

    My choice

Definitely Sara Sidle. She was the reason I watched CSI.

Dana Scully. Yes, I will still date Scully.

Nikita -- from the La Femme Nikita TV series.

Either Ro Laren from Star Trek: The Next Generation or Admiral Helena Cain from Battlestar Galactica. It's my thing for Michelle Forbes.

Or Captain Shane Vansen from Space: Above and Beyond. Anyone remembers that short-lived sci-fi TV show?

    Lauwer's picture

smart is hot indeed but hotness is hotter...

So I'd date Carmen first!cause she is so fricking hot it probably hurts to be near her!

    next:

Sarah Connor (Lena Heady not Linda Hamilton ofcourse!)

'Thirteen'  from House, those eyes WOW!

Alice Pieszecki cause she's so funny and as stated before funny=hot

Calleigh Duquesne (Emily Procter) from CSI:Miami, she's the hot blond with the southern accent, god I love her accent

I'm not colorblind, I know the world is black & white

Ok, now for the secret confession/totally embarrassing part. Provided Jonathon was firmly out of the way (and never existed)... Jennifer Hart. Oh. My. GOD!
