Tracey Ullman delivers the “State of the Union”I don't watch the State of the Union address anymore because I don't like the speaker so much. But on March 30, I'll gleefully watch the new and improved State of the Union, when Showtime debuts Tracey Ullman's new sketch comedy show “in which she plays a number of different characters … presenting a day in the life of America.”
I could tell you all about the show, but I think Tracey Ullman can do a much better job of it. Watch her flash her new blue U.S. passport as she describes the series: Since the world is not so fond of the U.S. these days, I suspect it will be interesting to get the view of someone who has chosen to become a citizen. Regardless, it's pretty much always fun to get Tracey's Ullman's take on anything. She's been doing social commentary via sketch comedy for more than 20 years, and she's awfully darn good at it. And think of all she's contributed to American culture thus far. She gave us The Simpsons via The Tracey Ullman Show.
She gave us lesbian “Chris” to Julie Kavner's professional golfer, Midge Dexter, in the inaugural episode of Tracey Takes On. She gave us her own brand of pop music. (Ullman was was working the '60s-girl-group sound long before Amy Winehouse was knee high to a poppy plant.) And I bet there are all sorts of things you didn't know about her. Did you know that she cowrote a book about knitting?
Did you know that she loves Indian music and Gracie Allen and the movie Broadway Danny Rose “because it celebrates a loser in America”? And that her heroes include John Lennon, Gandhi, Peter Sellers and Gwen Ifill?
See, she's just fun. I don't know about you, but I'm certainly looking forward to learning more about her and her take on the state of the union. The show will be on Sunday nights at 10 p.m. after The Tudors. Submitted by on January 17, 2008 - 4:41pm. |

Tracey Ullman's fab!
Even though I was young at the time Tracey moved from the UK to the USA, I knew what I would be missing out on! And the funny thing is that I was listening to several of Tracey's song from back in the day and enjoying it :)

Multitalented and brilliant
I remember watching the "They Don't Know" video when it first came out. Seriously good stuff. I never really watched her sketch comedy, even though I had always heard great things about it. I know she's a great impressionist (not sure if that's the best descriptor) and writer.
In the promo for her new series, isn't it funny when she starts mock singing that "Proud to be an American" song?
Thanks
Cool, I am so glad to hear this news. Love Tracey!
