Rosie to drop anchor at MSNBC?The word on the lesbian cable news street is that left-leaning Rosie O’Donnell is in discussions to join MSNBC for a nightly news show.
Nothing is final, but I’ll wager that if execs are talking to the New York Times, it’s all but decided. And in retrospect, it makes a lot of sense that Rosie would find another forum for her liberal lectures following her yearlong stint on The View, during which she regularly dissed President Bush, dished on 9/11 conspiracy theories and lengthily discussed gay marriage. UPDATE: [Nov. 8] The MSNBC deal appears to be off. The New York Times has the story here and here.
She regularly updates her blog with entry after nigh-indecipherable entry about news items, including the presidential administration run amok, the war in Iraq and the Israel-Palestine conflict, among other current topics. And if you’ll recall, the last few years of The Rosie O’Donnell Show were a train wreck of emotional outbursts about gun control and foster care. A prime-time news show would certainly make complete her transition from Broadway-loving Queen of Nice to Phil Donahue (or is that Marlo Thomas?) for the new millennium, but I worry. What happens when the girthy gabber goes head to talking head against Republicans who are smarter than her View foil Elizabeth Hasselbeck (not a difficult hurdle to jump)?
If history is any guide, her emotional and visceral reactions will provide endless grist for the mill that is Bill O’Reilly and the rest of the Fox News hacks, as well as every other right-wing hater. (I wouldn’t be surprised if O’Reilly dedicates a regular segment to debunking anything that comes out of her mouth.) I also worry that when the going gets personal, she’ll give up, as she did with her recent publicity tour in support of her book Celebrity Detox. The normally outspoken O’Donnell canceled her scheduled media appearances, saying that she was “not ready to discuss or defend” the book and that her emotions were still “too raw.”
If that’s the case for a book written months prior, what about when she’s confronted directly? Will she walk off the set? Quit the show, a la The View? The established news show format dictates split screens and shouting, not to mention in-ear advice and a rigorous nightly schedule — and it doesn’t allow for audience participation and giveaways, Rosie’s bread and butter. But because I’m a hopeless, helpless, huge fan of strong women who speak their minds, I can’t help but want her to succeed. And maybe, because it’ll be her show on her terms, she will find satisfaction. She’d certainly be in the company of other liberal hosts (talk is that she’d take over the 9 p.m. slot following sharpshooter Keith Olbermann’s nightly Bush smackdown), and the flagging channel could definitely use the ratings goose she’d no doubt provide (though whether they’d retain any journalistic credibility by hiring a decoupager who hangs upside down for a mood boost remains to be seen). She might not be the most respected name in news, but Rosie is one of the only out lesbians speaking up for issues that matter to us, and for that she deserves our support. Whether you think she’s a blowhard or a voice for the underrepresented masses, I’ll bet you at least acknowledge the importance of visibility. But it’s not all settled, and the fat lady herself has yet to sing. Perhaps she will divulge a few details during her show tonight at the New York Comedy Festival (she kicks off the event with an evening of stand-up). Stay tuned. I love Rosie, but...
i agree
I generally don't think that she is the best at making well-reasoned arguments. Though I often agree with her overall point of view, I'm often left thinking "I don't think that's the best way to make that point...try approaching it from a different angle."
But, the cable "news media" (I'll take that out of quotation marks when they devote more than 50% of their airtime to actual news) does love divisive, emotional, and less than reasonable hosts of all ideologies, so I wouldn't be suprised if this happens. And I'm sure it will have good ratings if it does.
i'm not her biggest fan, but...
What choice do we have?
This is too if-y for me.
Rosie has written in her blog time and again that she doesn't need the money regarding anything she does. So it is too easy for her to close shop if things get tough...as I can easily see it getting...as the Fox "news" channel loves nothing more then someone they can make their viewers afraid of so they can get them to rally against something.
But on the other hand, Fox might end up being MSNBC's and Rosie's biggest advertisers focusing on her on a daily basis...thus getting many curious people to tune in and watch her.
I guess it is just a matter if Rosie hangs tough while being a target and looks at the bigger picture of any publicity being good publicity.
Rosie...
Rosie
I'm glad you said it first.
I just don't think Rosie's the right person for this.
I'll go further and say that while I know that she's 'all we got', but I don't think that is necessarily a good thing. I'm utterly frightened that this is not going to work out and she's going to be left with egg on her face once again as she is 'representing' us.
me too ...
If MSNBC is giving her a show, that means it's going to be purely for ratings, so the bigger the circus, the more people will watch/scoff/criticize. I don't think she's emotionally or intellectually equipped. If she does do a show, it SHOULD be something like Keith's Countdown, where any guests she has on are reporters about various matters. It shouldn't be anything like The Daily Show (not in terms of content, but in terms of nightly guests) - only Jon Stewart could battle Lynn Cheney and live to tell the tale. (don't you like how i just restated everything you said? :)
I also agree that the "using what we have" method, as a community, is not the best tactic. We shouldn't cheer on the dark horse, if the dark horse has a broken leg, a blind eye, and can't control the direction of an argument.
Naming is a difficult and time-consuming process; it concerns essences, and it means power. But on wild nights who can call you home? Only the one who knows your name.

Awesome
'Cause the next time Bill O'Reilly does an aweful homophobic segment like that "Lesbian Gangs" crap, there will be someone on a news channel that will actually call "BS"...loudly.
Not for Rosie
Whether or not I agree with her (which I generally am too embarrassed to) I really don't think she has the temperament for "discussion". She lets her emotions rule her mouth and that is never a good idea for anyone. The number one problem with the mainstream media is the marketability. I like FoxNews just because they "report"...the way the new used to be. For MSNBC to add Rosie to their team would only go to further the argument (by others) that they are too far to the left.
As for Rosie being a spokesperson for lesbians in general? I, quite frankly, prefer to do my OWN speaking.
And Bill O'Reily is a riot.
Fox News?
Say What?
Um, what? Showtime has programming that's less fictious than Fox News' fair and balanced news reports.
So you watch FOX?
Let's Not
You know, I'd have a great deal more respect for Republicans if they just admitted that Fox News is biased.
There's nothing wrong with watching biased programming. I'm a liberal and I enjoy my fair share of it (Countdown with Keith Olbermann, The Daily Show). If Republicans would just admit it, we'd all be free to enjoy our biased programming without having to worry if the other side's really getting a fair shake.
But oh no...instead of embracing reality, Republicans like to wrap themselves in the illusion that Fox is fair and balanced and that liberals are out to smear the only people on TV courageous enough to tell the truth. That illusion, I imagine, is cut from the same magical cloth that fashioned that Mission Accomplished banner on the USS Lincoln and the Emperor's New Clothes.
Give me a break.
Do I watch Fox? Not if I can avoid it, but as it happens, it's sometimes required in my line of work. Trust me, no one's more disappointed by that fact than I am...but thanks for your snark, it'd be endearing if it wasn't so patently wrong.
I'd list all of Fox's transgressions, but really...who has that kind of time? I mean, what with all of us being members of clandestine lesbian gangs...there must be new members to initiate and pink guns yet to be distributed.
Fox News is Op-Ed
Most news on TV is actually Opinion Editorial. It confuses the public because they think they're actually getting factual news, when they're really just getting someone's opinion on the news. Though I think you're mainly just trying to ruffle feathers because Bill O'Reily walks a thin line between Op-Ed and Hate Speech...one of these days his opinion on gays is going to incite violence against gays. Yeah, that's hilarious.
I'm much more comfortable with Op-Ed shows where it's clear that it's Op-Ed. I get my news from Reuters.
Just the facts please...
What, exactly, is BO's opinion on gays? I watch him regularly and I have NEVER (regardless of what the censored and "mainstream" media would tell you) heard him say anything on the subject. He doesn't like Rosie's saying that 9/11 was an inside job...neither do I. And war-mongers are just a word thrown out by liberals to try to draw attention away from the fact that the war is necessary.
Sorry...I may be the only Republican lesbian but I will stand by the truth...not liberal name-calling.
Rosie - latest
I saw Rosie's show at the Lincoln Center tonight and she mentioned that she's in talks with "a network" for a new show.
It was kind of a freaky evening - her surprise guest was none other than Roseanne Barr who did about a half hour gig (and I'd forgotten how funny Roseanne's stand-up could be). Then the two of them did about 20 minutes unscripted banter at the end which was pretty lame (shows how important writers are, people!). The funny thing is - Rosie made Roseanne look distinctly sane, which must be a new experience for Roseanne. She (Rosie) went off on her usual rants (including that bizarr-o Building Seven conspiracy theory) and Roseanne kept throwing her lifelines to bring her back to the land of the sane (or medicated).
A news show? Heaven help us - it'd be a bit like Nascar - I'd watch it for the crashes.
Love Pussy xx
Yes, but...
lesbian without borders
MSNBC should give Rachel Maddow a show
A Shout Fest that features
a gold-plated trapeze. Hilarious.
