Emma Watson is the new face of Coco Mademoiselle

According to MSNBC.com, Harry Potter actress Emma Watson will be the new face of Chanel fragrance Coco Mademoiselle, taking over from previous helmer Keira Knightley when Knightley’s contract comes to an end this summer. The appointment is being seen as a typically classy move for Watson, with an anonymous source in the article firmly stating, “She’s not going to end up like these other Hollywood train wrecks, she just isn’t.”

Rather bizarrely though, the source quoted by MSNBC for the story not only congratulates Emma, but seemingly takes the opportunity to have a sideswipe at her Potter co-star Daniel Radcliffe, who will soon be appearing on Broadway in Equus where he has a nude scene: “No-one is judging Radcliffe. Let’s just say Emma has always made good decisions, and always will.” The assumption seems to be that the Chanel role will involve being demure and fully dressed; an assumption that the last ad campaign featuring Knightley doesn’t fully bear out:

As AfterEllen.com blogger Reese DoWitt pointed out in a recent post on celebrities and scents, Chanel has made a feature of pairing actresses with the directors of their most successful projects. Knightley’s television spot for Coco Mademoiselle was directed by her Atonement and Pride and Prejudice collaborator Joe Wright:

While I’m generally a fan of anything involving Keira Knightley and a bowler hat, there’s something about that commercial that just doesn’t quite hit the spot for me. Maybe it’s the fact that a close-up shot of Keira spreading Coco Mademoiselle up her worryingly emaciated arm doesn’t so much make me want to buy perfume as it makes me want to feed her a sandwich; or maybe it’s the fact that the “climax” of the ad feels so anti-climactic (she goes in to kiss her boyfriend, and then she … puts a bit of perfume on his neck! Surprise!)

Anyway, as both a perfume fan and a Watson fan, I’ll be interested to see what angle the new Coco Mademoiselle ads will take. Which, if any, of the Harry Potter directors will they choose to direct Watson’s spot? And will they (hopefully) be able to avoid the urge to make corny jokes about her “casting spells” on people with her fragrance?

    On Daniel Radcliffe and Equus

Yes, that was such a bad career move on his part. Because getting acclaimed for his acting in an award winning Peter Shaffer play was sooooo stupid of him...

In other news, Emma Watson is a total minx.

    "Sooooo Stupid" Indeed!

I do believe I see your tongue in cheek.
    ;-)

I applaud Daniel Radcliffe for that decision. Peter Shaffer's Equus is a phenomenal play and the part of "Alan Strang" is a role that is often coveted by young male actors.

    What a "foolish" career move!

What was the false rumour? About Watson or Radcliffe?

I am a huge fan of Watson, I don't know why, she's way younger than I so I feel a bit weird liking her, but she's smart, very good looking and has that... thing. Integrity, intelligence. More of those chicks in H-wood!

About this Chanel-thing, haven't seen the commercial of Knightley before, but will be looking forward to watch it with Watson! Like her a lot. Need I saay more...?:)

All celeb sites pulled the story after E News posted this.

Heard about Chanel conjuring up an ad campaign featuring Harry Potter star Emma Watson? Just an illusion.

A rep for Chanel tells E! News that widespread Internet reports, fueled in part by a story in Britain's Daily Mirror, that the 18-year-old actress was set to pocket a $6 million payday for pushing Coco Mademoiselle perfume are "just a rumor": "It's false."

Per the erroneous reports, Watson, famed for playing loyal pal Hermione Granger in the Potter franchise, supposedly inked a two-year deal and would replace Keira Knightley.

    Emma Watson!

Hah! I just got back from China where every day groups of girls would come up to me, yelling "Hermione Granger!" and wanting a picture with me! It was kinda bizarre, but hey, I'll take it where I can get it, lol! Anywho, I think it'd be great if she is indeed the new coco mademoiselle!

    heh

when my rather butch friend travelled to China, kids ran up to her yelling "Harry Potter!" and wanting a pic with her.  It made me realize, she kinda does look like Harry Potter.  Too bad you guys didn't meet, that would have been a great thrill for the kids!

i read it today on a non celeb site.

good on emma watson if she did/does get the gig. a worthy replacement to Keira, who is one of my fave actresses.

i wouldn't say she was in any way emaciated, and to me, for what you see of her arms in that ad, her arms look well defined (i know what i mean!). i can see some muscle.

i said this regards angelina jolie and her guns, it's her life, we have no right to judge, and i'll say the same thing about keira. she looks great to me, if she's thin, so what, the press would just be on her as much were she fat, she'll never win.

That ad (I've only seen the pic, not the tv ad) with keira is so hot, true. But it would be interesting to see Emma as Coco Madamoiselle..a good career move because she's still in that in-between stage. Not quite a woman and no longer a girl...so maybe being a madamoiselle would give her a new H-wood image. She is beautiful and her eyes are smokin in the top picture of her but still way too young for me...I feel weird seeing her in that way right now, if you know what I mean.

Haha, what? No offence to Emma Watson, she's pretty and all and looks classy I guess, but one, she's eighteen, and two, she's Hermione Granger! Call me old fashioned, but you just don't go from a one trick pony to Chanel. Nah.
