"I'd Do Anything": Rachel is ousted and Jodie hangs on for another roundThe four Nancy finalists became three on Saturday night, in a shocking elimination that saw 26-year-old Rachel Tucker sent home from I’d Do Anything, the BBC’s search to find a girl to play Nancy in a new West End production of Oliver! Rachel The fact that Rachel would wind up in the “bottom two” based on public votes wasn’t a surprise to me, as she has been there twice before. What was a surprise, given that Rachel has the most professional experience of all the remaining finalists, was that Andrew Lloyd Webber would choose to save inexperienced 17-year-old contestant Samantha Barks instead of her. Although I haven’t always found Rachel a hugely charismatic performer, she is someone I would trust to carry a West End show. And, ironically, her elimination came after what the judges agreed was her best performance in weeks: a rendition of Liza Minnelli’s "Cabaret" that started off a bit stagy for me, but became unexpectedly spine-tingling towards the end, given the sheer force and power that she was putting into the lyrics. I don’t know if it’s just one of those songs that it’s impossible not to be moved by, but by the time she declared, “When I go, I’m going like Rachel” it had pretty much become the performance of the evening for me. You can watch the clip below: The remaining three contestants are now Samantha Barks, 18-year-old Jessie Buckley, and 28-year-old Jodie Prenger. Jessie Jessie was the next to give a solo performance on Saturday night, singing “What I Did For Love” from A Chorus Line. Although she is pretty and sang well, making an emotional connection with the song, I admit that Jessie has seemed to me for a while like the most amateur of the remaining contestants, and I was actually expecting her to be eliminated in this round, not Rachel. The fact that she wasn’t even in the bottom two makes it clear that she has a strong fan base – and she herself was keen to talk up her suitability for the role, saying endearingly that “I’m built like an ox – I could do nine shows a week!” The judges were definitely less keen, though, with John Barrowman saying she still had too many awkward mannerisms that should have been eliminated in week three of the competition (though in fact, he and all the other judges had still been giving Jessie nothing but praise at that point, so he has no-one but himself to blame). Both John Barrowman and judge Denise Van Outen named Jessie as the contestant who “wasn’t Nancy” after they had seen all the solo performances. Samantha After Jessie was Samantha, singing the Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston duet, “When You Believe” from the Disney film, Prince of Egypt. In my opinion, Samantha is someone who really has made the journey from amateur to near-professional over the course of the series, as her singing performances have become astonishingly confident and polished, particularly given her age. I also love her voice, but she has yet to prove she has much in the way of acting talent, or any ability to convey emotions other than pride, anger and defiance. The judges stated that they had given her this particular song in order to see if she could show “vulnerability” – which, in my opinion, she utterly failed to do. Perhaps the public agreed with me, as for the first time she landed in the bottom two, and was in fact the contestant with the least number of votes. Nevertheless, Andrew Lloyd Webber decided to save her and put her through to the final – meaning that perhaps he thinks she has the emotional range and the life experience for Nancy, even if I don’t. Jodie Jodie was the last to give a solo performance, singing "Out Here on My Own" from Fame. The judges said they wanted to see “grit, not glitter” from her, as they felt she still had a tendency to be “too cabaret” – and in my opinion she delivered, with an emotional, heartfelt performance that led Denise Van Outen to say she wanted to hug her. Judge Barry Humphries and guest judge Cameron Mackintosh (who will be producing Oliver!) were less keen, though. Barry Humphries told Jodie that although she had been criticized in the past for overacting, he actually felt she was now giving too restrained a performance. Cameron Mackintosh, surprisingly, complained of a lack of “grit,” and also said that she was too “matronly” – which it was hard to see any other way than as yet another jibe over her weight. Both of them named Jodie as the contestant who “wasn’t Nancy” – which I can’t help feeling is going to be awkward if Jodie does end up winning the part, and then has to work with Mackintosh as her producer. She and Jessie are now the only contestants never to have been in the bottom two. In terms of group performances, this was a bit of a lackluster week for me. The four girls’ rendition of "A Hard Day’s Night" was both uninspiring and a bizarre calling card for the role of Nancy. Jodie and Sam’s duet from Jesus Christ Superstar seemed, frankly, tacky and inappropriate, given all the pelvis-grinding while wearing “angel-style” white dresses – I’m not normally hugely sympathetic to Christians who call up to complain about what’s on their TVs, but in this case, I almost wouldn’t have blamed them. Jessie and Rachel’s duet of “Buenos Aires” from Evita was better, though I didn’t love the musical arrangement of the song. Next week’s final will see the casting of the role handed over entirely to the public vote, as first one and then another of the three remaining contestants are eliminated. Any predictions as to who’s going to come out on top? My money’s on Jodie … but you never know. Submitted by on May 27, 2008 - 3:00pm. |

Jessie's my girl!
But I think that Jodie may win the public vote and she would make a fantastic Nancy.
Sam is a great performer but doesn't seem right for the part, although I'm sure she'll walk into another role or a girl group. And that's a compliment, not a criticism!
As for Jessie her future lies in running away with me! I would love to see her performing somewhere like the Pigallle Club in London
Cannot wait for National Nancy Day on Saturday but I'd Do Anything is camptastic fun and will be sorely missed.
Bah!
I wanted Sam gone! Rachel was my joint favourite with Jodie :( Sam has to go next surely.
~~~~~~~~xXx~~~~~~~~
Passion, it lies in all of us, sleeping... waiting... and though unwanted... unbidden... it will stir... open its jaws and howl. It speaks to us... guides us... passion rules us all, and we obey.
Jessie to win!
I think she is so talented and has such an endearing personality. She is so cute and I think she would make an amazing Nancy. I wish John would get off her case already as she was praised at the beginning by all the judges and not really given any criticism until now... and they wonder why she's still got the habits from the beginning?!
Sam is pretty good too but for me she's nothing special...
Jodie annoys me too much... I hate her reaction to when she's put through! Does she have to practically roar?!
I did find it quite funny that the two Nancy's that the judges picked that weren't Nancy for them were the two not to end up in the bottom two.
Also what is up with the Olivers? Of the 8 there were 4 I really wanted for the role and 4 I didn't particularly liked and they managed to pick all three olivers from the group I didn't like!
Love jessie!
I started watching on saturday becasue my sister made me, and now i'm addicted! I love jessie, although i'm not sure if she's right for the part... I can't stand jodie though, so i hope either jessie or sam win.
Jessie to win! For
Jessie to win! For sure!
I voted 4 times this week, and although she may seem amateur, I'm willing to bet that of the 3 left, she'd sing 'As Long As He Needs Me' the best, sending goosebumps down everyone's backs and reducing the audience to tears!
Rachel was my second favorite though :(
Jodie is starting to annoy me, but I'd prefer her to win than Sam, and I'm betting on Jodie to win, as she has a HUGE fan base.
But I'm definitley voting for Jessie. She's the prettiest, lovliest, (I have friends who know her) best singer, is a talented actress (Barry said so!) and even looks like Nancy. Jodie is good, but would be better suited to a part in Hairspray? And when you watch the show, you can tell how much she wants it more than the others. (Sam especially, who doesn't seem that bothered.)
Yeah, Jodie will win, but JESSIE ALL THE WAY!
Nancy - does she play for our team
Ive heard rumblings that one of the Nancys is gay. Or was gay. Not taht now she's straight but that she isnt a nancy anymore!
Anyway, who could it be or is it all rumour and no truth.
My money might be on Sam bacause how happy was she to meet Idina Menzel?!?! I know that Idina is amazing and anyone would be over the moon to meet her but considering she was (and always will be) Maureen....and Sam looked mighty pleased to hug her....made me think
Also, when she performs and they cut away to her family and friends i keep seeing this blonde who creeps into my gaydar just a wee bit.
Any thoughts?
Sam!!
I really want Sam to win - I love her!! But I don't think she will, and I doubt Jessie will either and she's my second favourite. I don't dislike Jodie, she'd make a good Nancy, I just prefer the other two, she's going to win anyway.
I didn't particularly like the Oliver choices, Gwion was sooo cute but the other two, especially Harry (maybe..?) I didn't think were particularly good. I wanted Kwayedza to get it - he had such a sweet voice!
Jodie is my favourite of
Jodie is my favourite of the ones who are left, but I think that Jessie will win, because apparently the bookies have always said she was favourite and they were right with both winners in both of the previous shows. I wouldn't know cos I actually haven't watched either of the previous shows!!
I liked your comment that Jessie had nothing but praise from the judges for a long time. I do think it was sort of their strategy to influence the public voting, and it was the reverse with Rachel, they brought her down for weeks only to lavish her with compliments on her last day.
I agree that Samantha's improved but seriously you can't put a beginner in a West End production or it will just go to her head too much. And I don't think she has a crush on Idina Menzel because I'd bet you if she did, she'd at least know how to pronounce her name right!
Re: Jessie, just because says she could, it doesn't mean she can actually handle 8 shows per week. She has shown to be quite unstable and she always replies back to the judges which I find extremely irritating and childish.
I really think Jodie at this point is the most qualified to win. I would've preferred Rachel because she had experience, but out of the 3 who are left, Jodie is the best candidate hands down.
Idina
Haha yeah. Thats a good point!
~I've been watching your world from afar, I've been trying to be where you are, I've been secretly falling apart...~
I want Sam or Jessie to win
And i'm not saying that Jodie's bad, she would probably be good in the role, she just bugs me!!
If you think she's annoying when she gets through each round think how unbearable she's going to be if she wins it!!! Ha ha
Rachel was my favorite
From the very first show (in which she performed About You Know way better than the Sugarbabes ever could) I was totally rooting for her. She was talented, cute and very professional.
I don't really know what's going on in that oddly-shaped head of Lord Lloyd-Webber, but saving Sam instead of Rachel was probably a mistake.
Funnily enough, I want Sam to win now. Jessie is (as the panel has stated often enough) a VERY awkward mover and to me she just doens't show any real emotion in her performances. I'd be alright with Jodie. Yeah, she's a bit loud, but I actually think she has the best voice out of the remaining three.
But I'm a Sam!girl now ;-)
Jooooodeh!
..should win because wow... she's hot lol
thee end!
I wanted Rachel to win it!
I wanted Rachel to win it!
She was also my favorite since her performance of "About You Know". Sam should have gone out of her and Rachel, but i think overall Jessie should have gone. She's not been that consistent over the whole show. Sure she's had some amazing performances, some of the best of the series, but she's also had quite a few bad ones, perhaps some of the worst. But i do still love her and wouldn't mind too much if she won. But right now i want Jodie to win :] I love her! She would play the role so well i think. Although i love Sam, i don't think she has enough experience for the role of Nancy. She kind of reminds me of Siobhan from the first series, "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria", although she was my favorite, i didnt want her to win because i felt she needed a few more years before playing such a major part. But now i'm so glad she's in Grease, because she is amazing :] :]
I think either way, who ever wins, all of them will get something out of the show. Look at the Josephs from last year, most of them are now in West End Shows! Daniel is starring in Avenue Q, Ben in Hairspray and Rob is touring the country as Joseph! Same with the Maria's, like i said, Siobhan's in Grease, Aoife was the understudy to Connie in the SoM, performing 2 shows a week, Simone was cast as Evita, and so on.
So even if they dont win, this show has opened up a world of oppurtunity for the girls. Good luck to all of them :]
Buuuut, i still want Jodie to win! Go Jodie! :] :]
Thoughts on "I'd Do Anything"
I think Andrew Lloyd Webber made a huge mistake picking Samantha over Rachel, not because I loved either one of them but because, like you said, Rachel is dependable. ALW seems to have a thing for Sam but I was shocked when he took it to the level he did on Sunday night.
I have liked Jessie from the beginning, partially because of the gay rumours about her (yes, I'm a hopeless lesbian). I think she's got a great voice and is talented but, alas, she isn't Nancy for me. She is still awkward and needs to grow into her talent a bit.
I am all for Jodie winning the whole thing. I couldn't stand her in the beginning of the show and I thought she'd be out within a few weeks. When she stuck around, she really grew on me (same with Ashley) and now I think she's fantastic. She seems the most "human" of all the contestants and looks as if she really appreciates being there.
Go Jodie!
I don't know anymore...
I still absolutely love Jessie but I don't think she's going to win it, because she is still really awkward. It's either going to be Sam or Jodie, and to be honest I don't mind who wins it because they could all be Nancy. Okay, so I prefer Sam a little bit more than Jodie but Jodie is the best all-rounder.
It made me laugh when Rachel went out to be honest, I wasn't that keen on her but that wasn't why I laughed. As you all know, Rachel and Sam have had this rivalry thing going on for the past few weeks. Did anyone else notice that Sam was grinning all the way through 'As Long As He Needs Me'? Now what made me laugh was that I paused it just after Sam took away Rachel's locket; Sam was giving her a gleeful, triumphant smile that just screamed 'ha, I'm I'm better than you,' whilst Rachel was just giving her a death glare. Good job that looks couldn't kill. I might take a screen-shot and make it my wallpaper (but that would mean replacing Jordana Brewster... no!).
Anyway, I'm definately going to see Oliver when it opens and I'll be keeping my eyes open for the girlswho don't get the part of Nancy, because there is no way they're not going to be in the West-End.
Hehehe. I noticed that
Hehehe. I noticed that too!
For those who missed it the first time, the death glare is at about 3:14 in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dC7tkJsPxgY
I never liked Rachel. I
I never liked Rachel. I don't know why. Not keen on Sam either.
I'm fine if Jodie wins. I do like Jessie a lot, but she is a bit awkward. I hope drama school can help becaus eher voice is phenomenal and she's really cute (I'm not saying hot, she's a kid for crying out loud ;)). I really don't get the sudden criticism for things they praised in the beginning, that goes for both John and Denise. Since neither she nor Jodie have been in a sing off I think it comes down to one of them.
I also don't get the choice of Olivers. But what do I know.
This series is much better
This series is much better than the sound of music one when it comes to singing! I remember a lot of off-key notes in the first series, and Memory really blew me away.
Sam and Rachel shouldn't have been put in this position and I will be very sad to see Rachel go :( Poor Andrew Lloyd Webber, really tough choice :(
Jessie FTW
I personally thought Rachel would have been the safe pair of hands to put the show in, but my heart has always, not so secretly, been with Jessie.
I can see where John and Denise are coming from when they criticise her, but as all involved pointed out last week, the one that's chosen would have six months to grow into the role before it hits the stage - more than enough time to iron out minor flaws (although Jessie's accent is still a bit worrying!).
Jodie's fine, but kinda annoys me. For me Sam has never really connected to the material she's given (although the judges say she's overcome this problem) and while she is very good vocally she just doesn't sell it emotionally.
I'm not surprised
If Sam ends up winning it, to me it would seem a bit odd. Because although she was in the bottom 2 last week, she's still there. And despite her obvious lack of experience and the fact that many of the other girls [ie Rachel, Francessca and Sarah] are much better than her. The judges seem to of already decided who they want to win and that's Sam. Barry's been practically obsessed with her since the beggining, almost in a creepy way =/ and she always gets rave coments from the others too, when sometimes I sit there thinking, "hold on, she wasn't that great tonight =/!"
But anyway, if she wins i would'nt be all that surprised to be honest. I think she has an amazing voice, but i don't think she's Nancy. She would do well in something like Grease, not as Sandy, maybe as Frenchie or something. Not sure though.
But not a Nancy. ALW = Idiot.
Rant over :]
As Long as SHE needs me...
C'mon Jessie!
Whoever wins how about an afterellen interview with the final 3 after? If Brownne cannot make up it up to London I'd happily stand in for her. Although I think I may have to get to the back of a very long queue...
Really looking forward to tonights shows (yes there's 2 of them) and allegedly all the Nancy's are back for a number and the top three have some one on one tuition with Mz Liza.
There just better not be any more comments about Jessie being too Vanilla or not feminine enough from Barrowman and Denise. Or I may throw something at my TV, and I'm really not usually that sort of girl.
I agree that Barry is damn creepy leering over Sam, poor girl must be terrified. She is stunning and very talented but I cannot see her as Nancy.Frenchie is Grease is a good call.
Jodie would make a great Nancy and she seems like a lovely lass so I would have no qualms about her winning. I'd happily console Jessie (in my dreams).
