Adele is the next one-named wonderThese days, being compared to Amy Winehouse would be the equivalent to calling some a trashy, racist crack-head. Not so flattering, right? But, there was a time just a few short months ago that Ms. "Wino" Winehouse was on the top of the world with a platinum-selling album, Grammy awards, and a number one song. And it was then that a young, British soulful singer, Adele started making a name for herself was referred to as “the next Amy Winehouse.”
Don’t worry, Adele — we know it’s only a musical comparison, and I have to say that I don’t think it’s that far off, either. Both women have a very smoky component to their voices (of course, in conjunction with that accent, woo!) and both graduated from the prestigious Brit School (as did Lily Allen, Kate Nash and Katie Melua). In fact, last spring Adele suggested that the female alums form a “supergroup” of sorts, but I think Winehouse’s recent exploits have probably quashed that idea. After winning the first ever Critics’ Choice Award at the BRIT Awards in December, Adele has seen her career skyrocket. Her freshman album, 19, debuted at #1 in the UK and was certified platinum in three weeks. The song “Chasing Pavement,” reached #2 in the UK and the top ten in several other European countries.
Recently, Adele’s popularity in the United States has been growing: she just completed her first North American tour, has signed with Columbia Records, performed last week on The Late Show with David Letterman, and “Hometown Glory,” was featured on the finale of a little show called Grey’s Anatomy. Maybe you’ve heard of it? The single, which I can only describe as a haunting love song for her hometown (London, duh), is easily my favorite from the album. It was actually originally released last year, before 19 came out, as a limited edition vinyl, but it is being re-released in the UK on July 21. Of course, with success comes a wave of press coverage and scrutiny, but the thing I like the best about the singer is that she seems to have a good, strong head on her shoulders, and a brazen sense of candor to match. Take her interview with Digital Spy, for instance. When asked how she was doing at the beginning of the interview, Adele responded, “Hungover. I've been on a four-day bender because I just got back from America and I've been catching up with my mates in the pub. I don't get too drunk when I'm on tour because I don't want to cancel anything, so I have to make up for it afterwards.” It looks like she’s learned a little something from the Winehouse demise after all; save your partying for after performances, people! Later in the interview, when asked how she was handling all the fame, Adele had this to say: It's all gone so fast that it's impossible to notice everything that's happened, let alone take it all in. I tried to develop a tough skin for a while and kept ignoring everything that was going on, which made me come across a bit confrontational and cocky I think. But in fact I'm the complete opposite: I couldn't be happier with what's happening, but I'm trying not to think about it in case I s--- myself. Note to self: Do not, under any circumstances, make Adele think about her fame and talent.

I've always liked her music, though Chasing Pavements has been way overplayed over here (UK) - at one point you couldn't change a channel on tv without it being on somewhere! ;-)

She was on the bench next too me in the pub a coulpe of weeks ago. I kept looking over at her because she I didn't know if it was her. She was better looking in RL. Our bench ended up talking to her's and she was lovely and a real giggle.

Oh god, when her song "hometown glory" started playing during Katee and Joshua's contemporay performance on SYTYCD I was immediately drawn in. Now I'm in love with her voice. She has so much control it's amazing. Her voice is soo sexy. lol I'm all infatuated with her now. *purrs* I wuv her.

I got Adele's album a few months back and I've been listening to it virtually non-stop. Her voice is amazing and the album is one of my favorite releases this year.
I missed her show in DC a few weeks ago, but her live performance got rave reviews from everyone I know that went. I'm looking forward to seeing her on her next American tour swing.

I'm prone to obsessive
I'm prone to obsessive behavior, so I go through constant phases where I discover a new artist, and then have them on repeat for about a month. Then I move onto the next thing.
Adele was my most recent victim. I heard "Chasing Pavements" late one night (I also suffer from insomnia! lol) and I nearly snapped my neck because my head shot up so fast. It's hard for a singer to instantly have my attention, but she did. I guess I'm just a sucker for a slow, husky drawl and an accent.
She seems so down to earth, and I just love the feel of her stuff. It's very Motown/girl group-inspired. And that's the only way I'd compare her to Amy Winehouse. Winehouse has a voice like nothing I've ever heard. Adele's is similar in that raspy quality, but I just wouldn't draw comparisons. I guess people need to, though.
I agree with the author of the article; "Hometown Glory" gives me chills every time I listen to it. My absolute favorite is "Melt My Heart To Stone". And "Right as Rain" is just so cheeky and groovy.
I hope people take notice and keep Adele around for a while. She's got that something.

I go through that same obsessive behaviour haha! Only diffirence is that Adele was from a couple of months ago. Still love her though! I noticed her song when it wasn't a hit yet and emediately bought her album. It's just so good! Hometown Glory and Make You Feel My Love are my favourites. I make it a sport nowadays to find artists before they get really famous and start promoting them to other people. And every single one has become a hit!:D The Brits have a great number of new female singers now that are doing very well. Like Duffy, Amy McDonald and of course Adele. Love 'm all!

i think it's great that we have a whole load of different sounding female singers. duffy keeps being compared with women like dusty springfield and lulu (i'd be flatter by the former, not sure about the latter) - so maybe we're having a resurgence of fantastic 1960s style chanteuse. makes a nice change from the likes of girls aloud, etc.
not fond of kate nash and lily allen though. they're a bit too yelpy.

I think you are supertastic-awesome. I find her music dull in that "monopolizing on retro motown sound by the Brits". I hear this *and her* a lot by friends who LOVE this kind of music and I am personally not too impressed, just "yea....*skips song on friend's radio head".
I can see the hooplah, I just don't believe the hype. I personally like those who came before her such as Dusty Springfleid and David Bowie.
Chasing Sales
Absolutely. The thing is that the fat cats at the music business have seen how Amy Winehouse has shot to fame, and are trying to replicate that sound with a cleaner, girl-next-door image. It's a cynical marketing scheme aimed at the middle-classes that want pleasant, inoffensive wallpaper-music.
And to continue this cynicism, I'd like to state my claim that I think 'the industry' is putting Adele out because she is a 'larger lady' (in comparison to most others in the spotlight), not because they really think that big is beautiful and the voice is what matters, but to further increase her appeal and sales.
I agree about Bowie and Springfield. Give me some Billie f-ing Holiday over these pprimped and PhotoShopped op-tarts any day, hm? ;)

She broke through in the Netherlands with Chasing Pavements a couple of months ago. She already has another hit here.
I love her voice, her appearence and her as a person.
I hope and expect to hear lots of her in the future.

She's got a fast car
This is a seemingly dead thread, but I just signed up on here, so it's a new thread to me.
I love Adele to death, but agree that Chasing Pavements needs to be shelved for a little while or dear old, er young, Adele will meet the same fate that Tracy Chapman met a number of years ago with Fast Car, and I would hate to see her fade away because overexposure. And yet, tonight as I was flipping through the channels, I heard Jay Leno say, "blah blah blah...Adele". She sang Chacing Pavements, pared back with just a keyboardist, and she seemed, to me at least, somewhat tired of singing it herself.
As much as I adore her voice, I think I'm going to give her cd a rest for a couple months so that I can enjoy her all over again when I go see her concert in January.
