"American Idol": More Beatles, but why?

The American Idol producers thought last week’s show went so well, they might as well do an “encore night” of Beatles songs. I guarantee you they regret their decision today. Last night, most of the contestants chose to pass on some of the more well-known Beatles songs, and very few performances stuck out. Luckily, for Kristy Lee Cook though, no one was completely dreadful this week, either. Amanda Overmyer finally got a chance to open the show last night, and I thought she looked great. Thank goodness they stopped overdoing it with her style.

As far as her sound, well, it was the same-old, same-old, and I think her time might be running out unless she can show us something new next week.

Kristy Lee Cook was as boring as usual. She is so out of her league in this competition, it’s ridiculous. Sadly, my favorite lady, Brooke White, was also fairly bland. She sang “Here Comes the Sun,” and when I say that’s what she sang, I’m being literal. Those were virtually the only lyrics she used in the entire performance. It was repetitive and awkward. She was totally out of her element, and I was totally disappointed. I’m just going to forget about that performance and focus back on “Let It Be” and “Love Is a Battlefield.”

The one bright spot on the night was our favorite Irish lady, Carly Smithson. She definitely loses points in my book, though, for her odd (and unnecessary) use of symbolism while explaining to Simon why she chose, out of the entire Beatles’ collection, to sing about a blackbird.

I think I prefer her voice in the lower register. And she got a “7” tattooed on her hand, for Season 7 of American Idol! Neat!

In Syesha Mercado’s video clip, she revealed that her most memorable moment on Idol thus far is being in the bottom three last week, and that she would be singing “Yesterday.” I was pleased last week that no one had chosen to massacre the classic, but realized it was inevitable when they chose to repeat the theme. Syesha’s version, although slightly altered and pitchy in parts, was actually fairly good. And I agreed with Simon (as I tend to do) that she probably saved herself with the performance.

Ramiele Malubay, on the other hand, is possibly in trouble. She wanted to choose an upbeat song so as not to bore the judges again, yet she still managed to pick a snoozer. What happened to “A Hard Day’s Night” or “Love Me Do” or “Help”?

David Archuleta, David Cook, Jason Castro, and Michael Johns all had solid enough performances to keep them around another week. Chikezie? Not so much.

Though I was off on my prediction last week (Hey, my two choices were in the bottom three!), I’ll continue to offer one.

My prediction: The bottom three will be Chikezie, Kristy Lee Cook and Amanda Overmyer.

Hmm

I'm thinking Chikezie, Cook, and Mercado for the bottom three. Well, watch me be totally off.

I'd go with Syesha, Kristy

I'd go with Syesha, Kristy Lee and Amanda Overmyer. The only performances that were actually good in my opinion were Carly and David Archuleta.

my picks

i agree that amanda showing the same old same old. i dont want her to get eliminated, but at the same time i really dont want to watch those same performances anymore. i'll go with amanda, kristy lee cook, and chikezie like you. i hope it wont be amanda. i predict that ramiele willlast much longer than we would think, kind of like this seasons sanjaya.

Why oh why oh why

I'm really protective of the Beatles' songs. Blackbird : why the modern music in the background while it's way more touching with a simple acoustic guitar.

And Yesterday : get over it, music industry. Everybody and their mum has made a cover of it.

I loved Syesha's perfomance

I loved Syesha's perfomance she should defo not be in the bottom three this week for me its probs Chikeze/Kristy Lee Cook and either Amanda Overmyer/Michael Johns or Ramiele Mulaby. Not bothered if Cook or Chikize go.

Really weak night :/

I also think the bottom three will be Chikeze (he's trying too hard...), Amanda (I'm sooo tired of listening the same music all over again) and of course Kristy Lee Cook (I actually feel bad for her every time she sings on the stage).

I didn't really like any of the performances though, they were all kinda boring :/

Big disappointment for Brooke's choice of song..sigh..I think I'm going to listen "Let it be" once again to forget

Kristy Lee Cook!???

How is this girl still on the show??? I guess she has that sweet all american girl kind of look going for her, but she consistently sings flat, and has very little personality.

Why oh why does she now get to go on the tour and not Amanda Overmyer. I mean really, even Kristy looked shocked when she found out she was staying!

In reference to Carly being in the bottom 3

I hate to generalize anything but I do have a theory about why contestants such as Sanjaya remain in the competition longer than they should and others: Gina, Amanda and Carly end up in the bottom 3 or voted off.

Amanda hasn't been as strong as I would like and honestly seems to be a one trick pony. I like her, don't get me wrong, but getting voted off was inevitable. Do I think she should have gone before Kristy... definitely not! I thought Amanda's performance was much better.

As for Carly being in the bottom 3... Why America? Why?

Here's what I think... most of those that dial in are young girls who vote for the guys they think are hot or for the girls they look up to and would like to be. Popularity contest, much? The standard 11-15 yr old girl doesn't want to be covered in tattoos, ride a Harley, have a tongue ring, etc. They want to be like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

Honestly how else do you explain Carly being in the bottom 3?! It's sad really but such is life. Only way to change it is for us to starting calling in repeatedly voting for those we like (I really can't be bothered with that) or plan a worldwide viewing of the new Hannah Montana movie scheduling it for the exact moment that 'all lines are open' - yeah that would work!

 :)

Okay... rant over! Hope everyone has a wonderful Easter weekend!
