“American Idol” goes to DollywoodIt's been a long time coming, but Dolly Parton finally stepped into the American Idol arena last night as a mentor. Though I was a little uncertain about how well the contestants would handle her collection of music, I was excited for a never-before-done theme. Dolly was fun and bubbly and encouraging and absolutely everything an Idol mentor should be. One of my favorites, Brooke White (along with a bluegrass band), opened the show with “Jolene” and failed to impress the judges. I admit I wasn't completely blown away either, but I thought it was a solid performance. She's not going anywhere anytime soon. Ramiele Malubay sang “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind,” and for the first time in several weeks, I feel like she chose the right song and sang it well. Simon Cowell, however, didn't like it and called her performance “forgettable.” (Is anyone surprised? He uses this insult every week.)
One of the things I was most excited about for Dollyweek was seeing if anyone would sing “Travelin' Thru,” the theme song from the 2005 movie Transamerica. And while I thought it was going to come from one of the girls, I was pleasantly surprised at Jason Castro's rendition. If you're interested, you can watch it here. I believe this was my favorite performance of his thus far. Good for you, Jason! At this point, however, you can forget about all other performances of the night, because Carly Smithson stole the show. Simon may have disagreed, but who really cares about that anyway? This was the breakout diva performance I had been looking for from her, and it came in the form of “Here You Come Again.” Here's the video: If Brooke isn't careful, she might get replaced at the top of my personal list of favorites (which we all know is the deciding factor in the competition). Now, for those three of you who have been keeping up with my Idol posts, this next sentence will be as shocking for you to read as it is for me to write: Kristy Lee Cook was good. She was actually good. No, really! This isn't a belated April Fool's joke; see for yourself: Impressive (for Cook), no? Syesha Mercado rounded it out for the women with a performance of “I Will Always Love You” that blended Dolly's version with the Whitney Houston take on it. Because of that vocal, she will be hanging around for at least one more week. (Random note to Syesha: Yellow is definitely your color, girl!) As for the results tonight, I really have no clue who could be going home. The three men I haven't mentioned thus far (Michael Johns, David Archuletaand David Cook) all had incredibly solid performances, which leads me to believe we will see the departure of a female tonight. Ramiele? Kristy Lee? I really don't know; what do you think? Submitted by on April 2, 2008 - 1:00pm. |

Hmm, I'd select Ramiele and
Hmm, I'd select Ramiele and Kristy Lee for the bottom this week. I thought both performances were *good,* but a bit lackluster (especially Ramiele's actually; it's quite possible I just didn't get what she was doing with the song, but I don't feel much energy from her). Wouldn't mind seeing David Cook go home either.
And WTF? No one did "9 to 5" or "Islands in the Stream"? What is the world coming to?!
I think...
I really don't know, normally I'd say Kristy Lee and someone else, but she was actually good this week and I don't think she will be at the bottom. I think Ramiele will be one of the bottom with any chances, she was the weakest performer to me :/
The other one I have no idea...I hope Jason Castro because I can't listen through any of his songs @_@
Dolly
I watched this season for the first time last night because of Dolly. (Thus far, I've just been following the season on AfterEllen.com.) I thought Brooke was better than the judges assessed...but I agree that her performance lacked emotion.
I thought Carly Smithson was very good, but I was not as impressed as the judges were. And Kristy Lee Cook left me a little cold. I certainly didn't think she was bad, but I just wasn't impressed.
I did, however, love the Travellin' Thru cover.
Mostly, though, it was just fun to watch Dolly!
absolutely. :-)
Seeing Dolly's reactions to all of the Idols (and hearing her sing along with them!) was very endearing, and definitely worth watching in and of itself.
Meh
I have been following American Idol this season as well (via DailyMotion et all) and truly have to say that none of the contestants ping as a potential winner to me. Well Okay, save for Brooke White, but just a little.
But if I had to choose one out of the current ones, then my vote would have gone to Brooke.
I am a pretty good guesser too. I called all Seasons of the Dutch version. Especially the last one. First time Nikki opened her mouth to sing I said she was going to the finale if not win the whole damn thing.
The Way The Cookie Crumbles
No Borders Allowedno love for carly
i feel bad for carly. shes gets shot down every week even though she is clearly a better singer than almost all of the others. i kinda have a feeling though that they might be doing that on purpose and then give her good comments later on to keep the show "interesting". they are such spinners.
hopefully kristy will finally be going home. why is she still there? i'm afraid ramiele, brooke, and carly are in trouble. we'll see..
Carly stole the show last night!
Idol last night
It was all so underwhelming. Everyone was just ok. Brooke (whom I love, unapologetically) was alright. She was kind of smiley during it which the song does not call for but I thought it was fine. Hopefully she won't get booted because she's the only one I really really like. So incredibly cute and I just love her voice. There's more but I'll bring it to the AI thread.
Michael Australia was good and he controlled his arm! And the rest of them were blah.
Just please don't let it be Brooke that's going home tonight. Anyone else but her!
It´s tough..
but I predict the bottom three are gonna be Kristy, Syesha and Ramiele. I like Ramiele and think she has a great voice but she has constantly picked the wrong song but this time she was alright and it was nice to see her connecting with the audience which I think she has failed to do before. Oddly she has managed to escape the bottom three everytime. I do hope she hangs around for another week...still waiting for her big moment, the girl can sing we all know that! Syesha has a nice voice but people at home seem to have a problem to connecting with her and she has, if I am not mistaken been in the bottom three almost everytime except for once. Sadly I think she is the one to go home. My wish is that Kristy goes home, didn´t like her performace and havent liked a single one of them. But I must admit her songchoice last week was genius....
Favourites this week were David Cook, Michael Johns and Carly Smithson..those three are my favourites in general. I also like Brooke and Jason and they gave a solid performance this week.
Most annoying moment of the evening was Simon´s comment about Carly´s choice of clothes. It is her style and that is what makes her cool. I hope she don´t change ..she is absolutley gorgeous the way she is!!
Carly's Clothes
I must agree with you about Carly's clothes/Simon's comments. I thought Carly looked adorable!
In case my post didn't make it clear enough, Simon really irritated me last night. :/
KC & CU flashback
Go Carly!
I just think that Carly is fabulous and hope she wins it all, though I kind of doubt that will happen. Good call about Simon criticizing her clothes 'cuz he has nothing better to criticize. She rocks.
Am I the only one who doesn't like Brooke very much? She seems so phony to me. Like she's trying TOO hard to come across as nice.
:D
I was relatively disappointed with Brooke's performance. She has been giving very average performance for two straight weeks. I feel that she needs a break soon to affirm her talent before we lose interest :D
Ramiele seems to have a good voice, but her performing skill is not good enough. I keep feeling that she lost too much energy in dancing and hence failed to show off her vocal.
Jason's friendly and nice, but I have never been impressed with his performance.
Finally, Simon appeared to be in a foul mood, but I have to say that I agreed with his comments on the contestants' vocal performance (and just that). I really wish that the audience in the studio pays enough attention to his opinion. Everyone would start boo-ing him as soon as he said the word "but". It is starting to wear me off now :-P

Carly and Archuleta did
Carly and Archuleta did awsome, i think she looked really good and what Simon said its BS. Jason did one of he's strongest performance so far (and i usually don't like him). Syesha has an amazing voice and i give her props for that performance, i hope it pays of. Brook, David C. and Michael did ok.
Awww Ramiele!!! One thing for sure-she has an amazin voice... just a sucky choice of song. and then she lets her nerves take the best out of her... i totally see her in the bottom 3. OMG when u said that Kristy did good-i went WWHHHAAAAT!! i ran and saw the performance and well she did ok ...i guess..s STILL she needs to go.
Thanks for the recap!~!
Best Dolly Song Ever
American Idol Top 9 Commentary
Carly..
she did such a beautiful rendition of the song. We don't get to see the show until Saturday when it is shown here in Ireland. She has a huge amount of support here. I love Dolly she is coming to play Kilkenny, Ireland in June and I am going with group of friends, i have seen her twice before and the way she engages the audience is so sweet... Little Sparrow is one of my favorite dolly songs..
