"American Idol": '80s night under another name

After last week’s poor choice of theme on American Idol, I remember thinking to myself, “Self, it can only get better from here.” I was incredibly mistaken. It appears as though every theme will eventually repeat itself later in the season under the guise of a different name: “Songs from the Lennon/McCartney Songbook” became “Beatles Night,” and now “'80s Night” has morphed into “Songs from the Year You Were Born.” Oh, boy. (I can only count down the days until Dolly Parton is the mentor!)

Ramiele Malubay kicked things off with a performance of Heart’s “Alone,” prompting the inevitable comparison to Carrie Underwood’s performance of the same back in Season 4. Who sang it better? You decide.

Ramiele Malubay:

Carrie Underwood:

That was one of my favorite performances from Carrie, so it’s no contest in my book. I think Heart agrees, too. However, it cannot go unsaid — Carrie, what was up with your hair?!

Back to this season. Syesha Mercado sang “If I Were Your Woman,” and it was definitely her best performance in the show so far, but I still am not a huge fan.

Next for the ladies was Brooke White, and after last week, she had a lot to prove. The judges didn’t like her arrangement of “Every Breath You Take,” but I absolutely loved it — even her little misstep at the beginning.

She looks gorgeous, sounds even better, and plays the piano by ear. Come on, America, your winner is right here!

The other female frontrunner, Carly Smithson, sang “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” and sang it pretty well. Simon thought she looked “uptight and tense,” but I am going to chalk that up to nerves after being in the bottom three last week. The main thing I would like to point out about this performance, though, is that it was very wristcuffy.

(It will catch on, Sarah!)

And while I’m on the subject of lesbianish accessories, did Paula look like she just finished a Dykes on Bikes ride with those gloves, or what?

The last for the ladies was everyone’s least favorite country girl, Kristy Lee Cook. Unfortunately, even though she was just as awful as usual, she will be sticking around for another week because she sang none other than “God Bless the USA.” My initial reaction was just to laugh at the cheesy performance and kiss her goodbye once and for all. But then it hit me. No one could possibly get voted off the same week they sing this song. Simon said it “was the most clever song choice I have heard in years” and my favorite Idol blogger, Rickey, had this to say: “Well if there ever was a song choice that will never get you eliminated on American Idol, that was it.” That’s the message for future Idol contestants: When you suck, sing something patriotic.

In that vein, I think the bottom three will be Syesha Mercado, Ramiele Malubay and Chikezie. Someone get Chikezie out of there, please.

And don’t forget to watch the results show tonight at 9 on Fox; Kimberly Locke is performing!

Brooke White...

...Is one of my favorite idol contestants ever. She is talented, beautiful, and she is just an all-around natural musician. I thought it was adorable when she messed up at the beginning, as well. :)

And WTF with Kristy Lee? Can we please just get her out of there already. It's bad enough that we already have to see her on tour...oh well, at least I know which performance I'll be going to buy a t-shirt during, though.

American Idol 80's

Myesha in the bottom three...I don't agree.  Everything else was pretty right on the money.  Love Brooke, Carly Smithson wristcuffy is right!!  Ramiele...WTF?!  Carly singing Crazy On You from Heart blew Ramiele's remake of Heart"s Alone outta the water.  And talk about Chikezie, what the hell went wrong with David Archuletta?!  He had better start making some better song choices.  Jason Castro too.

I love Syesha she's just so

I love Syesha she's just so down to earth and has a great voice.

My bottom three are Chikize, Kristy Lee Cook and Jason Castro for me, maybe Ramiele Mulaby

Brooke and David C and, well, everyone else

Brooke is absolutely brilliant! She can do no wrong in my estimation. I think David Cook is great too, his versions of Hello and Billie Jean were both phenomenal. I'm sick of David Archuleta now though. At first I thought he was all shy and sweet, now he's boring. Really boring. I find Ramiele boring too. I don't think she has anything original and there are much better belters in the competition in Syesha and Carly. Oh, I love Carly too, but that might be the Irish accent. I usually really love Jason too but he sorta blew it this week, if only he could sing Hallelujah again. Damn, I almost forgot about Michael, that was genius. He's brilliant when he does Queen, remember Hollywood week?

As for Kristy, she's still there because of her boobs. I rolled my eyes when I heard her song selection. It's funny that it'll keep her in whereas if you sang something that patriotic in England you'd get voted off for trying to con the audience...

I wish I could vote, but I'll have to just use my Jedi mind powers since I live in England.

re: theme this week

your wrong about this being 80s night. Your forgetting their where some contestants that where born in the late 70s too. Also have to agree about Brooke I think its either going to be her or David Cook is going to win. But watch out for Ramiele Malubay

Really? Brooke?

I don't get it. She's a talented musican insturmentally, but I don't think her voice is anything about average. I guess different voices appeal to different people, but I just don't get what's so special about the vocals? I'm open to finding out, because at this point she bores the crap out of me.

Ballads

I think, vocally, Brooke White has a niché for ballads (re: Let it be). Apart from that, as much as I love her, I can't really say that she has an outstanding or exceptional voice.

Faith Hill

I did a double take last night when Brooke was standing next to Seacrest and she smiled that mega-watt smile.... she looked very similar to a young Faith Hill (when she did a cover of Piece of My Heart back when I was in middle/high school). Not vocally... maybe I was just swooning, who knows, but last night, with her hair straightened I found some Brooke love for sure. Her studio version of Let It Be floored me. It was amazing. I like Carly a lot too. Rocker David is my favorite though, as long as he continues progressing he will win. I'm glad Michael Johns sang Queen last night and showcased what I was waiting for. I downloaded his studio version of Across the Universe and my goodness, he gave me goose bumps. That is such a beautiful song. Unfortunately KLC has claimed another victim this week but I remember a few years back when Carmen "goat girl" Rasmusen stayed far too long.

RE: KLC

I wonder if she is sticking around because of us girls. If you ladies remember a few weeks back where she might of came out of the closet  in her what people might be shock to know about me segment.(I think that what it was called) where she sort of came out of the closet. So us girls could be at fault here for her sticking around. :))
chaibuff06's picture

ooh that's interesting

I vaguely remember her "about me" segment. I remember hearing her talk about being a big tomboy, but I couldn't really hear the whole thing because my grandma kept talking =/ lol...

What did she say? Not going to sway my voting, though, hehe. Brooke has my heart. Actually, David Cook has my heart as well.

Brooke as a stalker, really?

I love Brooke, but that was a bad choice of song for her. I didn't buy it. The song is just too creepy. The closest Brooke would get to stalk somebody would be to drive past their house, like one time, to see if they were home. Then she'd feel so guilty about it that she'd go volunteer at a homeless shelter or something.

And I thought the same thing when KLC chose that song...DAMN, I knew it was going to save her for another week. At this point, IMO, she is the worst one on there and needs to go soon.

Star-potential

I have a feeling that this year's contestants are mostly great indepedent artists, but I have seen neither commercially viable star-potential nor exceptional talent :D

As regards this week, I love David Cook's take on Billie Jean. How original was that! And I agree with the judges: the bridge of Brooke's song sounds kinda off to me.

David Cook pulled a Daughtry

Actually, his version was a cover of a cover (Chris Cornell in this case), which is something Chris Daughtry also did. I don't mind that actually because it shows that the artist is making an effort to make the song work for them. Live's version of "I Walk the Line" worked perfect for Chris Daughtry, so why should he try to pull off some karaoke of the original? Carrie Underwood did it as well with Janis Joplin, which Faith Hill covered (I think--am not 100% sure), but they didn't think it worked for her, so I don't think that caused much of a stir.

Some people feel really strongly about it, though. I think they get irritated when the judges don't realize they are covering another artist's "original" take on the song and praise them for being "original".

tootles's picture

Thanks for correcting that :D

So the originality of Cook's performance is gone. Good thing he nailed it somehow.

I like Carrie's rendition better and I'm not being biased.

Carrie Fan

I am a carrie underwood fan and her rendition of Alone was awesome. I will say that Ramiele started out with great tone and seemed like she'd nail it, but I was not impressed with the bridge or chorus... I feel that Carrie belted it out better. But you never know. :)

David Cook and Brooke White

David Cook and Brooke White are the real musician here. The rest to me are garbage and boring.

And please NO MORE Carrie Underwood. She can sing but she's unoriginal and her voice is boring as hell.
