"Get Smart" with Anne Hathaway this weekend

Alright ladies, bust out those mechanical pencils and dust off your textbooks; it’s finally time to Get Smart. The movie’s posters and trailers have been out for months, and while I’ve completely revved myself up for a good laugh, I’m still most excited about a heaping dose of one, Anne Hathaway.

As Agent 99, Hathaway is reprising Barbara Feldon’s role, and in an Associated Press interview, she gives credence to the gargantuan shoes she has to fill:

“She inspired so many women. When you look at the kind of women we aspire to be today, a lot of them are very similar to Barbara Feldon's 99. There's no way I'm going to be able to touch that kind of legacy, but I do think I have good chemistry with my co-star, so that's probably what I have in common with her.”

The co-star of which she speaks is (of course) Steve Carell, who plays her perpetually inept partner Maxwell Smart.

The film may only be hitting theaters today, but the Smart stars hit the red carpet on Monday for its premiere, and they all looked quite dapper.

Now, if you’re thinking that the testosterone-estrogen balance is a little off in that picture, you’re absolutely correct. In fact, according to the movie’s imdb.com page, Hathaway is the only female member of the cast out of the first sixteen actors listed. Normally, that would turn me off of a movie strictly on principle, but, since 99 was the only major female character in the original television series, I’ll give it a pass.

Get Smart definitely has the star power, the marketing and the nostalgia-factor working in its favor, but opening weekend is bound to have its bumps. Not only will it be competing with the obnoxiously over-advertised Mike Myers’ film The Love Guru, but early reviews haven’t been too kind to Ms. Hathaway’s new flick. Most “experts” agree it will still out-do Guru, but from what I’ve read, the film doesn’t quite live up to expectations.

But, wait! According to Roger Ebert, Hathaway “never tries too hard but dominates the screen effortlessly.” I should hope so.

Despite the potential disappointment, I’ll definitely be scraping up $10 worth of loose change to see this over the weekend. How many seats am I saving?

Great movie

I went to an advanced screening of Get Smart on Wednesday and I was very happy with what I saw. Even though Steve was the designated scene-stealer for this movie I can tell you that Anne caught my attention just as well, or even better because as Agent 99 she was lookin' damn good.

Considering that Anne was the lone vixen out of the male cast, I was surprised to see how much face time she got. I thought the movie would be more focused on Agent 23 (Dwayne Johnson) & Maxwell Smart (Carell) but I was happy to see that most of it was based on the interaction between Agent 99 & Smart.

Hilarious movie in general so please, everybody go see it. If not for the plot you can just ogle Anne. That silver dress and the laser scene you see in the trailers is soooo much better on the big screen.

It was good.

I saw it at midnight- as I was quite stoked about this film. I grew up watching reruns of the show and I adore Anne.

I give the film a B. It was predictable and it had a few spots where it was the bad kind of cheesy. Of course Anne was the best part, but the cast over all did a nice job. I do recommend seeing it.

Shtarker, this is Kaos. We don't "ka-fricken-bloom" here.

Literally just got back from seeing it, and I had an absolute blast. I was sort of nervous about seeing it because this show has had such an impact on my life (when I was a young lass, instead of playing with Barbies, I was running around pretending I was Max), but I loved it. Steve imbues Max with such a sweetness and Anne kicks so much ass it's not even funny.

Loved Anne before, love her so much more now after seeing the movie.

Anne Hathaway in Passengers

Glad to see Anne get some press on Afterellen!

She's got a film coming out called Passengers, directed by Rodrigo Garcia, a director who tells women's stories amazingly well. He did Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her.

and Anne gave a sweet speech at a HRC event a ways back:

This was definitely a great

This was definitely a great movie for Anne Hathaway.  Even though I loved princess diaries, I'm glad to see she's maturing in her films a bit.

Seeing such a strong female character on the big screen was quite refreshing in this year of male dominated movies

Really?

For the last few weeks, every time I saw the trailer for this movie, I have been wondering who the hell would go see this movie.

It just looks very predictable and lame. Not my kind of humor.

The Original

Was anyone that has seen this movie also a fan of the show from which it's based? How does it compare?

The Original

I was (and am) a fan of the show.

They toss a lot of winks toward the crowd who loved and knew the old show- quotes, many of the same gadgets such as the cone of silence and the shoe phone. They keep Max almost exactly the same- 90% inept and funny- yet just like in the old series- he does indeed have a brain.

99 is entirely different. I don't think today's viewers would accept the role played by Ms. Feldman. We've come a long way, ladies. But- in my opinion, the new 99 is much better. I must say, though, they kept her ability to use her sexuality to her benefit- which was a staple in the original show. (I'm not complaining, though..) :D

Other than that- there are a lot of liberties taken. Sure, Seigfried and the Cheif are still around, but there are a lot of new faces, too.

If you go into it not expecting too much, you won't be disappointed.

I want to see Get Smart

I want to see Get Smart because I just love Steve Carell. I don't know how I feel about Anne Hathaway. I don't think she's terribly impressive as an actress. Who knows though, maybe I'll go see the movie next week and become a fan of hers.

When is it coming out in England?

Very much looking forward to it! I wonder when it is coming out in England... anyone knows?

Also, Masi Oka in the cast is a great bonus for me, he's such a sweetie in Heroes!

Loved it.

I went with my dad to go see it today, and we both loved it. My dad watched the show years ago and didn't expect much with the movie, but he really enjoyed it. I thought it was hilarious, and of course, I loved Anne in it. I love so many of her movies (yes, including the Princess Diaries ;)), and this was no exception. Plus Anne was sure hot in it (as always). :D

This movie was a blast. It

This movie was a blast. It was a lot of fun to watch, and both Steve Carrell and Anne Hathaway are great in their roles.

The sheer appeal of hathaway

The sheer appeal of hathaway combined with the hilarious antics of steve carell, made for a great hour and a half of entertainment, i hardley noticed the lacking storyline. Anne played the 'doesnt take no shit, will kick your ass' role well, and managed to keep sex appeal to a maximum, overall, worth seeing, but not gonna win best comedy award any time soon.
