"Idol" inspires

Tonight is the second annual Idol Gives Back special on American Idol, and it promises to be a celebrity-studded event. Due to the success of last year's event, it is going to be longer, it has brought in even bigger performers and more corporate sponsors. Idol producers have set a goal of $100 million in donations and pledges — $25 million more than last year's total.

But I'm getting ahead of myself, because there were performances last night, to the tune of “inspirational songs.” And I have to admit that for the first time all season, I don't have any major complaints!

Syesha Mercado got things started for the ladies by singing former Idol winner Fantasia Barrino's first single, “I Believe.” Randy may have thought she got in over her head on the performance, but I begrudgingly agree with Paula Abdul's grammatically correct yet awkward statement, “I just think hands down this is one of your most shining nights.”

Next was Kristy Lee Cook singing “Anyway” by Martina McBride, and although I thought it was definitely one of her best performances, I didn't like it nearly as much as the judges did. Yes, Kristy Lee has a good voice, but I can honestly say I know half a dozen girls who could have given an identical performance. Please allow me to reiterate how in over her head this girl is. But, alas, for the second week in a row she pulled out a performance that didn't make my ears bleed. Kudos, Kristy Lee. (Do I sound bitter?)

The award for oddest, gutsiest song choice of the night has to go to Carly Smithson for “The Show Must Go On” by Queen. During a week that is supposed to inspire, I would have thought she could have found something a little more, well, inspiring. Regardless, I enjoyed it much more than the judges seemed to.

I must ask though, did anyone else think of Moulin Rouge?

When it comes to Brooke White's rendition of “You've Got a Friend” by Carole King, I think I can let Simon's judgment of the performance speak for me: “Was it original? No. Was it pleasant? Yes. Thank you.”

I am getting a little bit tired of the crying, though. It was endearing after she sang “Let it Be,” and understandable when she was in the bottom three last week, but at this point it's just getting annoying to me. Has my heart gone cold?

Overall, my favorite performance last night came from Jason Castro, singing the Israel Kamakawiwo'ole version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” (You can go see the video here.) However, it really won't make too much of a difference how anyone did last night, because I assume no one will be leaving the show tonight. Booting someone in the middle of a record-breaking charitable concert would just be evil.

Seriously though, remember to tune into the show tonight. I thoroughly enjoyed last year's show, and even more favorites are involved this year: Keira Knightley, P!nk, Gwen Stefani, Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Mariah Carey, Annie Lennox, Gloria Estefan and Heart only compile a brief and incomplete sampling of the female celebrities scheduled to appear. For a more complete list of performers, beneficiaries and sponsors, go to the official website.

Unlike most other Idol broadcasts, tonight's show was taped ahead of time, and to tide you over, here are some images that have been released early:

It all starts earlier than normal, at 7:30 p.m. ET on Fox.

Idol Gives Back

Can I just say, that the title has always annoyed me. If "Idol" really wants to give back, how about giving away the add money they make just from one week of their program. Getting other people to give money is alright, but how about Idol actually gives a little.

IGB, eh

Yeah, I agree with the first post. Idol Gives Back is, I guess, good in what it's trying to do but still tacky at the same time. Maybe because it is American Idol and it is a big, huge machine. It's like a corporation but that's a whole different story.

Last night, I thought Jason was good even though I laughed through the first verse because of how ridiculous he looked with the ukulele. But I like it. It was the same as the "original" version of his rendition so nothing "new." Which brings me to Brooke. It wasn't "original" either but you don't really need to, I don't think. I think for some songs, you can sing them straight. She's just worn out though, it seems, regarding her performance and the way she was yesterday night. And a pimp spot after Archuleta isn't much of a pimp spot; just merely a little one.

Then there's David Cook. He was alright before, indifferent, but then the "Give Back" hand thing was totally douche-ish.

I agree with the other two

I agree with the other two comments. It bugs me that big money-earning shows like this make a big deal out of giving back to the community when they're making millions of dollars for themselves every day.

Also, yes, I did immediately think of Moulin Rouge when I saw Carly Smithson's song. I'm glad I wasn't the only one.

Inspirational?

Was I the only one who was totally confused?  It seemed like the whole show was "off" a bit.  I did not find it inspirational and almost every performance felt subpar and kinda boring.   Some of those songs...I mean ????....And is it just me or is Ryan weirder than Paula this year?  The comment about Simon and his chihuahua's was just bizarre.  And where was the belt it out, get people up on their feet songs?  I wasn't impressed with Jasons performance at all.  Is it just the sound or does he have trouble projecting his voice and speaking words clearly?  Just askin'.  And Brooke appears to be tettering on the edge of a nervous breakdown after each performance...stop the crying for crying out loud! ;-p  Hope tonights show has MUCH more inspiration and spark.  And it is great they get people involved with the Idol gives back, but they should be doubling or tripling the amounts brought in by matching with their own contributions if they want to be impressive.  And yes, it is truly frightening and something is definitely wrong when Kristy Lee puts up one of the best performances of the night.  In my humble opinion.  I was surprised that I found this show, the night of endless possibilities and INSPIRATIONAL music!!! {almost as disasterous as the whole Beatles fiasco}.

This was a trainwreck!

I thought the whole evening was kind of disappointing. I agree with previous speaker that something is definitly wrong when Kristy Lee puts up one of the best performances of the night! And one of my favourites Carly were a disaster! I hope she makes it through this one. David Cook another favourite did ok..not nearly as good as the last 4 weeks but he should be safe. Best performance of the night was Jason Castro in my opinion. I think Brooke, Syesha and Carly might be the bottom three this week. Brooke did alright but it was kind of boring...and the crying is getting a bit old now. But I think Syesha goes home. Even if I want Kristy to be the one to go!

Meh.

I'm not an Idol fan, but I am a Queen fan (and an AfterEllen fan, therefore I read blog entries about stuff I couldn't care less about), and so the only video I watched was Show Must Go On, which is one of my favourite Queen songs. And really?! What you said on the one before (that I didn't watch); off the top of my head I know half a dozen girls who could have given a much better performance than that. And having moved a bit in Queen fan circles, I've seen it happen, too.

Idol is lacking

Did anyone else find David Cooks song just plain...awkward? It did nothing for his voice and it seemed more preachy than anything. He's not my favorite, but typically he is definetely impressing. Not last night though.

love, Love, LOVE Jason's song. I thought it was the best of the night.  And I suprise myself by saying that Kristy was actually good.

I agree that they could've chosen more inspirational songs. All in all I feel that, although this is supposed to be the "best year of singers ever," it is falling flat...

Something missing this year.

EW.com has the 15 best idol performances ever. I listened to the songs on the list (via youtube clips) and I heard talent, smooth voices, and breakout moments. This year no one has had a breakout moment, the wow factor that gives you goose bumps or the moment where the idol performer catapulted to a potential star. They keep saying this is the most talented cast ever and I will give those props, the cast is very even in terms of talent this year but no one stands out as THE one for me. It close to crunch time someone has to pull out the big guns (I hope).

Doesnt anyone else notice

Doesnt anyone else notice that the few times Ryan mentions it, he says "a PORTION of your donations went to buying nets in Africa" Im so annoyed with this show's pretentious "idol gives back" I mean they show commercial after commercial and have ads within the show with the idols starring. They make money off of viewers, then money off of the ads, now they're making money off of the charity? Ugh. Maybe Im just cynical but it pisses me off. ALL the money should go to the charity. And if not, then they need to say just WHERE that money goes, not just about the portion that appeals to our empathy.

End rant hehehe

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

No, your heart hasn't gone

No, your heart hasn't gone cold. Brooke's crying also bugs me. I didn't have a problem with it on Let it Be but she practically had a meltdown when she was in the bottom three last week, and she had to have known there was no way in hell she was leaving that night, so I thought it was unnecessary. Then again, I'm not crazy about Brooke, so maybe that's why I'm less willing to cut her some slack. Her talking back to the judges also needs to stop.

I thought Carly's performance was HOT, regardless of how wrong she got the feeling of the song. And I adored Jason Castro. I might even have a little crush on him, but I excuse myself with the fact that he kind of looks like a girl, so it's OK. :P
