The Weekly Geek: Comic Chic

You know, it can be lonely being a geek. Sometimes the so-called “normal” folks of the world look at you as if it’s somehow weird to do things like worship Katee Sackhoff and drool over new gadgets and gizmos.

Well, just yesterday I read something that should hearten us all: Megan Fox, of the Transformers flicks, just told The Hollywood Insider that she’s a total comic book nerd:

My sister used to collect comics when I was a kid, so I got obsessed with it through her. And I really like to draw so I'm obsessed with a lot of the artists that do comic books. It's just a good world. It makes me feel good. I love Comic Con. I loved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It was such a big part of my childhood. I just enjoy it. I don't know.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it, geek-haters! When a gorgeous, successful young actress can profess her love for such wonderfully dorky literature, you know we’ve made progress in this world. Elsewhere in the interview, she mentioned her role in Diablo Cody’s new film, Jennifer's Body, about a semi-lesbian, demon-possessed 16-year-old — but that’s a post for another day.

It’s actually almost chic to like comics nowadays, with a new major motion picture based on a graphic novel launching seemingly every other week. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment when superheroes went from being schlocky genre fare to mainstream, “tent pole” flicks, but I’d say it was around X-Men, with last year’s ultra-smash The Dark Knight completely sealing the deal.

And while the superhero movie genre has yet to give us many truly compelling female leads, it’s certainly gifted us with some ass-kicking ladies in spandex. Now that’s something we can all get behind, right? From Watchmen’s Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) to the X-Men series female half of the cast (there’s really no choosing), I salute the notion. Now, where on earth is Wonder Woman?

Finally, I’d like to address an event that occurred this week, just in case you missed it. Dedicated Trek fans will be coming off of theirRomulan Ale hangovers from Captain Picard Day (June 16), which I’m in favor of extending to Captain Picard Week. Actually, I’m thinking a Captain Janeway day may be in order for the more Sapphicly inclined Trekkers. I’m all for starting one up — complete with readings from fan fiction authors and a few fan videos. Who’s with me?

Megan, Megan....

I cannot bring myself to dislike this women, i think she's just a little confused, thats all.  I am aware of some of the stupidies that have come out of her mouth, but honestly people she is human for God's sake; It doesn't help that she's constantly in the spot light either so i say we all cut her some slack. Let us hope that she will eventually figure out its best for her to keep her pretty mouth shut :\

Some Comics Geekery

1) David Tennant will be at this year's San Diego Comic Con:

2) Angela Robinson to write comic:

THE WEB #1
Written by Angela Robinson; co-feature written by John Rozum
Art by Roger Robinson & Hilary Barta;co-feature art by Tom Derenick & Bill Sienkiewicz
Cover by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau
Variant sketch cover by JG Jones
Spinning out of August’s “Red Circle” event from superstar writer J. Michael Straczynski comes the new ongoing adventures of the selfish rich-boy hero the Web, and the mysterious-undying Hangman. Writer/director Angela Robinson (D.E.B.S.) and artist Roger Robinson (BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHTS) spin the tales of The Web, a man who has only recently come to understand the burden of true heroism. He’s fighting crime on his own terms, and for his first mission he’s hunting down the men responsible for killing his brother!

3) Also, since I'm on this topic, how come Big Barda never gets any love when it comes to lists of kick-ass female superheroes? When Jack Kirby introduced her in MISTER MIRACLE #4 back in 1971 she was like nothing that had ever been seen in comics before. Wearing battle armour and wielding a mace she leaps right into the action with a ferocity that just wasn't associated with super-heroines back then. She made Wonder Woman look like a wimp. Coming from the planet Apokolips and previously the leader of the psychotic Female Furies, the only thing even resembling a soft side she  ever displays is with Scott Free, Mister Miracle himself, whom she eventually marries. She towers over him, which is very unusual in any male-female comic pairing ever. Sometimes people who used her after Kirby didn't always use her properly, but mostly they did. I still remember one bit from when she and Scott were living in the 'burbs as a 'normal' couple and Scott receives a call from the police to tell him Barda has been attacked by a couple of muggers.
"Oh my God!" he says, totally horrified, "Are they alright?"

Jennifer's Body comic

For those interested there will be a Jennifer's Body comic released sometime in August.

Jennifer's Body presents a series of short stories set in the same universe and expanding on the same world of demonically possessed killer cheerleaders.

and some lesbian content hopefully.

Another life saved by hot girl on girl action.

I'm INSANELY excited for

I'm INSANELY excited for the awesome that's happening at SDCC this year considering I'm still pretty buzzed from NYCC 09. Between major announcements, blockbuster titles getting revamped and G4's almost non-stop coverage, I think I'm going to be hungover from it.

As for La Fox, she's hitting me like Angelina Jolie in the days before she settled down. Mouth running wild child with a penchant for saying whatever comes to mind, which is fine, except when she says boneheaded things or just things she she knows are going to be a soundbite somewhere. Whatever, she's growing on me in her complete and total lack of giving a fuck, I like that.

WHO THE HELL ANNOUNCED PICARD DAY?! I recieved no memo (then again I'm a Star Wars fan...but still, I respect good Space Capataining any day!) but I will co-sign on Janeway Day for God's sake, the freaking slogan writes itself!

Sometime people tend to be

Sometime people tend to be nerd, but we have to know our limitations and we are all accountable  to all of our actions similar to Sherri Goforth is the assistant of State Senator Diane Black who was caught sending emails with a racist image. She has confirmed she sent this e-mail, and well the apology she makes is that she “sent it to the wrong list” (It's not that Republicans are racist; they just hate people of color.)  This is after the "Birds of a feather" and "Barack the Magic Negro" emails that circulated amongst Republican staffers, further cementing conservatives as proponents of racism. She's been reprimanded, but doubtless Republicans would give cash advances to make racist associations and Sherri Goforth go away.

Okay....

but what does this have to do with comics?
