The Weekly Geek: The ninth season of "Buffy" comics get confirmed

Buffy fans, have you enjoyed your Season 8 of the comic series continuation of the beloved cult TV hit? Well good, because I have some delightful news for you: Joss Whedon (series creator and überdork himself) has confirmed that there will be a Season 9 — after the full run of the current series is over.

From Splash Page:

“Well, 40 issues was always the goal, and that’s how we’re playing it," Whedon said of the current Season 8 run. "We’re around issue 30 now, we’ve got about 10 to go, five of which I have to write, so I have to get on that. Then we’ll pause for breath and then we’ll start Season 9. I have had for a long time a conception for Season 8 that is very different from Season 8. It may not run as long, because 40 issues sounds great until you realize that it’s four or five years."

It’s been a long, mostly sweet ride for fans open-minded enough to embrace their favorite series in a more two-dimensional format, though comic geeks had no need for re-adjustment. The graphic novels have enjoyed serious attention from Whedon and other series writers, making the “canon” storyline all the better.

Plus, there’s been plenty of lesbian action. Willow (the friendly lesbian witch), of course, is a mainstay, and Buffy herself even experimented with another slayer. Show me something hotter than that in a comic book, and I’ll hand over my entire set of DVDs. Even the broken ones.

There are also no plans to produce a Dollhouse comic until Whedon can find an artist that he feels could actually do justice to Eliza Dushku. He made similar comments regarding the original plans for a Buffy comic — he was very adamant that the artist knew how to draw a “real woman." Having that much respect for female characters (and their real-life counterparts) is a rare and wonderful thing in a Hollywood producer — and just one of many reasons to think Joss Whedon is our kind of geek.

Speaking of dollhouses, Barbie is going to get her own movie. I suppose this isn’t so much geeky as it is amusing and/or horrifying, depending on your own perspective, but I’ll leave the final judgments in your hands, readers.

Wait a minute

My impression from both real-life and online encounters is that Buffy fans are deeply divided on the comic books--not because of the format, but because of various plot twists in Season Eight. I've heard a lot of criticism and lackluster reviews.

Are they worth it? Why or why not? Is there a point to read/watch up to and then quit? (And can you answer any of these questions without spoiling me too badly?)

I would say yes, they are

I would say yes, they are worth it. I've enjoyed it a lot, and would say it's worth getting into. *Shrugs*

It's like a lot bigger and stuff than before, but then they don't have the same budget restraints as they had on a TV show so they can think big and all. And get charachters back than before they couldn't because of the actors and what not. :D

I'd say give it a shot. But I'd start at the start, so get the first omnibus or whatever it's called and start from there. :D

Whats the point? They have

Whats the point? They have jumped about a million sharks in season 8 how can they possibly carry on in season 9?

I'm late into the game with the Buffy stuff because I was too young when it first aired. I might check these out.

F:Nicely diverted, B.
B:Diverted? That was me fighting for my life, Miss Attention Span.
F:This isn't a Tupperware party. It's a little hard to plan.
B:The count of three isn't a plan, it's sesame street

I'm not gonna lie....

I want Buffy to hook up with Faith. That'd defo be hotter than her and Shitzu..I mean Satsu *cough*.

But seriously (although I was serious about the last statement too) I'd like to see Fait really become part of the Scoobie team, she's a great character.

I think I have always wanted

I think I have always wanted Buffy and Faith to hook up. Just... yes. And the more Faith the better.

I'm a bit surprised Joss would say that about Dollhouse though when clearly someone is already drawing Eliza as Faith.

All this time I've been waiting till season 8 finished to get a massive omnibus or omnibus set of the whole season - but 4 years is way too long. Maybe I should get started.

YAY FOR SEASON 9!!!!!!

I'm probably speaking for a lot of ladies out there when I say I wish I was Joss Whedon in that last picture ;)

Very occasionally, if you pay attention, life doesn't suck.

I have not gotten around to

I have not gotten around to reading Buffy season 8 so I have my work cut out for me.  I wonder if they have cliff notes?

Awesome!

I'm a bit behind on season 8 (still on 25 I think?) but I hope 9 has some good story arcs like Wolves at the Gate.

I can't comment on how well Buffy transitioned from TV to comic book since I haven't watched the show. I was too young for it when it aired and my Buffy DVDs are currently lying around gathering dust. I swear I'll get around to watching them someday...

Yes!

This is so awesome. I love Joss. Speaking of people who can draw real women, did you guys know that Joss Wheadon and Terry Moore are friends. And they hang out with Neal Gaimen! They are my favorite man-bians ever *sigh*

awesome

I have really enjoyed season 8.  We just finished watching all 7 seasons again, we do so every couple of years and it really is my all time favourite show.  From half-way through season 3 onwards it is just quality.  There is so much depth and so many layers and new things to see each re-watch.  Jane Espenson's episodes are some of the best (especially humour wise).  The story arcs and character developments particularly through seasons 5 and 6 are just incredible.

One of my aims in life is to lend my dvds to people who have never watched the show and make them do it.  Have done it about 5 times so far and they all get converted.

oh and Man-bians rock, but i usually call them lesbimans or lesbros.

Awesome.

That pretty much sums it up. So so so glad they're continuing Buffy past season 8... I'm gonna have a hard time adjusting to no Buffy after this long.

*Willow sounding squeeeeee*

I was slightly late into the game (being only 7 when the series originally aired) however, thanks to the brilliance of my fantastic cousin, last time I saw her, 18 months ago (shes in Australia, I'm in UK) she sat me down and made me watch them.....and I was INSTANTLY hooked! I am a long time comic book/graphic novel lover, and so before I had even finished series 5, I ordered the graphic novels and went through series 6 and 7 as quickly as I could (which wasn't, cos they are awsome I had to watch a lot of eps/scenes more than once *cough* Willow and Tara...Willow and Kennedy *cough*) and I have now just ordered part 5 of the graphic novels and omg they are FANTASTIC! The fact that there is no problem with budget or actors not wanting to do it anymore or any of that, means that they are just wow.....if you liked/loved/became obsessed with the TV series (like me) and have even the smallest liking of graphic novels READ THEM! I am super excited by the fact that there will indeed be a series 9....even if I'm a little behind on the commenting!
