Your 10 biggest Grammy Award questions answered

So, if you watched last night’s telecast of the 50th Grammy Awards, you probably have some questions. Questions like, who is that guy, and why did he steal Amy Winehouse’s Grammy for Best Album of the Year? Or how is it that the Beatles won only four Grammys when they were together, while Fergie already has three? Or did Amy really thank her husband as “my Blake incarcerated” in her acceptance speech? Yes, yes she did. So without further ado, here are some of your most burning (though hopefully not itching) Grammy questions revealed.

Q: How it is it that the most electrifying performer in the room wasn’t even in the room?

A: Visa problems kept The Winehouse 5,500 miles away in London, but she still electrified via satellite with a performance that was equal parts raw, campy, sassy and defiant. Plus, she brought the one thing the somewhat stodgy awards affair sorely lacked — the air of unpredictability. God bless you, Amy Winehouse. Now get back to rehab and get better.

Q: Did Beyoncé realize she would get shown up in the hot-everything department by a 68-year-old woman?

A: My guess, no. But she should have. This is Tina Turner, people. Tina Turner.

Q: Has Nancy Sinatra already called Carrie Underwood and asked her for her look back?

A: One would hope, even if only to disassociate herself from Carrie’s uninspired rendition of “Before He Cheats.”

Q: What were they smoking when they decided to pair jazz singer and Vegas pioneer Keely Smith with urban cowboy Kid Rock?

A: Never mind what — can I have some?

Q: Who do we thank for the decision to include the sublime Feist in the show?

A: I have no idea, but I suddenly feel like buying them all iPod nanos to show my appreciation.

Q: How cool is Cyndi Lauper?

A: Oh, sorry, that was rhetorical.

Q: What did that poor ostrich do to Rihanna to deserve this fate?

A: Probably the same thing the unfortunate gold lamé beast the Time’s Morris Day is wearing did to deserve its fate.

Q: Do you think the deal Prince and Cher made with the devil to look this good at almost 50 and 62, respectively, makes them bathe in the blood of the innocents?

A: Naw, that might mess up their hair.

Q: Why do I suddenly feel like listening to the violin?

A: That would be insanely hot My Grammy Moment winner Ann Marie Calhoun.

Q: Am I the only one who tried looking at Alicia Keys' dress from several different angles, uh, just in case?

A: Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Amy!

Congrats to Amy for winning 5!!! Grammys. Great performance, she seemed to be doing well under the circumstances.. at least sober..
I liked the references she did in the songs to her man Blake lol.. "I'll cry for you 7614 my Blake.." LOL, "I'd rather be at home with Blake.."
Oh and Camden Town is burning down I'm afraid...

That short hairstyle...

... really looks great on Rihanna. I didn't like the bob she had before.
pecola's picture

Agreed

Her hair looked much better.

Did you see Beyonce give Rihanna the evil eye, when she came to hug Jay-Z after winning their Grammy for Rap/R&B Collaboration? And then, in turn, Jay-Z trying really hard not to actually hug Rihanna back? Talk about awkward.

I've got to say, I'm surprised that "Umbrella" didn't win more awards...that track was everywhere.

Ditto

Totally agree with you.  It's the best I've seen Rihanna's hair look.  Now if only the peacock hadn't angered her and gotten on her bad side.. :)

Key Moment

Loved Alicia's performance of her hit song.  My Oh My Ms Alicia....
TheWeyrd1's picture

Those were ALL my questions TOO!!!

Loved Amy's new lyrics...and winks at the camera. The folks behind the Grammy's made the right decision to make SURE they had her on the show...some how.

As for Carrie Underwood's performance...it was uninspired? I hadn't noticed... Oh. Right. I was too busy watching the futchy back up dancers...heh.

The Recap

Amy Winehouse's Visa problems were actually solved--she could've gone to the Grammys if she wanted to, but they said something about it being too late. ::shrug::

My reaction to the Amy Winehouse performance and subsequent award went something like this:

She's kinda weird, but she sounds pretty good.

Um, the dancing? That's kinda bizarre.

Her eyes keep moving--what's she looking at? Is she staring at herself in a monitor?

Still, sounds pretty good. I'm impressed. Rehab has done some good.

* Amy Winehouse gets award *

Winehouse reacts.

Okay...she's clearly high as a kite.

My Blake...my incarcerated Blake.

* pecola falls out of her chair laughing *

Feist's performance was a bit more mellow than I'd anticipated, but still great. I wish she'd been recognized more.

Alicia Keys looked fan-damn-tastic. I was bummed, though, that she and John Mayer performed together and didn't play "Lesson Learned," which is my favorite track off her latest album.

Grammy's

I enjoyed the performances by Alicia Keys, Fergie and Feist.

I enjoyed the outfit that Carrie Underwood was wearing for her performance, it reminded me of when Shania Twain sang in a similar get up some years back (though I don't remember if it was at the Grammy's or some other music awards show)... especially the thigh high boots.  I have to say that Carrie certainly has a smokin' body.

I had an 80's flashback several times throughout the show, what with Prince, Cyndi Lauper, Tina Turner, Cher et. al.

I too hope that Amy Winehouse gets better... she is a truly talented singer/songwriter and it would be a shame to see another young talent wasted (no pun intended).

Kudos also to the young man who sang the Beatles "Let It Be"... he has a wonderful voice.

Prince & Cher

I'm so with you Ms. S. on the timelessness of Prince and Cher. Regarding Prince, I've said it somewhere before - I would award Prince the 'Sexiest Man Alive' award every single year because he is. Does he ever have a bad hair day? And he's always immaculately dressed. Add to that that he does it "his" way evertime and there's just not competition. He's in a class all his own! Love this blog and no comments on the looking at Keys from different angles :-)

I loved love Feist

I loved love Feist mellow version of 1234 with the 7 piece brass band.  A true musician! Don't give em what they want to hear, give em what they need to hear!

I too was holding my breath with that Jay Z, Beyonce, Rihanna moment. I was thinking "Beyonce. Girl, don't it. Keep ya earrings on and the vaseline in the purse"

When Winehouse was screaming for her man, that was fun-ny. Give em what they need!

Was I the only one teary when Kanye was paying a tribute to his mom?

While I do believe in change and style evolution, I'm sorry.  I LOVE (like, love looking at her) Alex Alicia Keys.  But I still can't by this feminine image. And I only think she started gettin jazzy because people where speculating on her sexuality. (same with latifah) Still, it is not sitting right with me, and it doesn't look comfortable or natural for her.  She looks like she just wants her braids, her jeans, and her manly voice back.

Even in her drop dead yves saint laurent dress, chanel pumps, mac make up, and an up do with curls, when my gaydar is pointed at Keys, all of a sudden an alarm goes off the room lights up in rainbow colors,a disco ball drops out the ceiling and confetti falls out sky

She is still fine though

queeniefakesit's picture

HA!

Take THAT, A.Keys!! She called you ALEX!

Funny.

the girly does NOt work for her. She needs the jeans with the furry boots and braids and fedoras/fitteds and throwbacks and timbs and dickies and dental dams.

I got a dick like a mule...with a big dick.

get me started on Alicia and her makeover.  She can try all she wants.

Wow, amy actually looks human again!

Wow, amy actually looks human again! Can't believe it. Who thought we would see the day?! But I'm a huge fan, so I can only be extremely excited about it! Hopefully we get to enjoy her for many more years.

Grammys

I really wanted to see Amy's performance but alas Pride and Prejudice called. It's nice that it was posted here. It was really good. i'm looking forward to what she does next. I know her hair is kind of her signature but i just don't get it.

And i think i was the only one not feeling Rhianna's hair, i liked the previous style more. As a fellow black person it just pops into my head that it's gonna take a while for that to grow back. And yes the dress was messed up.

queeniefakesit's picture

LMAO@ the hair

i loved her hair. and as a fellow black person who also cut her hair off (but in a random fit of dramatic cuntiness), it takes FOREVAAAA to grow back!

But it's so cute on her. ^_^

Also. I've decided that while i would have wild raunchy sex without abandon with Amy Winehouse, i cannot stand her music. I've tried to like it, but she really sounds like a karaoke superstar to me. Sawry.

An aside: The spastic dancing black dudes in the background made it impossible for me to sit through more than 40 seconds of that clip.

am I the only one who thought Amy Winehouse sounded terrible?

Seriously. I cannot believe that everyone and their mother enjoyed that performance. It..was horrible. Maybe she is always this bad live?...Maybe she's just a studio artist..and that's fine..but stop performing live if you don't have the chops. That was just awful.

I hope she gets better through rehab though..I'm sick of the drugged up young women trend in the celebrity world.

beyonce gave respect

Beyonce gave Tina Turner her proper respect as an icon and maturity. Otherwise she would have blown that old broad out of the water.
