"Dollhouse" gets ready to go gay

In a world where a human’s mind can be erased and reprogrammed with an infinite number of personalities, you’d think at least one of them would turn out to be gay, right? Well, Dollhouse fans, your wait for its big gay moment may soon be over.

Series star Eliza Dushku told MTV blog Hollywood Crush that a there would definitely be storylines following gay and lesbian characters in the show’s second season. Can I get a hell yeah?

Eliza also dropped more hints about both the new season and the first season’s elusive, unaired thirteenth episode. The latter, she said, takes place in a post-apocalyptic world showing what the Dollhouse “can and would evolve to.” Also, expect the return of doll-gone-demented Alpha (Alan Tudyk) and the possibility of a appearance by fellow Whedonverse alum Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Castle).

No word as yet to who would be involved in the queer storylines. So, obviously, from now until the high-concept sci-fi series returns to Fox Sept. 18, we can engage in one of every gay gal’s favorite hobbies: fantasy lesbian coupling.

Who would you like to see get her gay on in the Dollhouse and who with?

Option 1: Echo and Dr. Saunders

Their chemistry was apparent in the pilot episode. Bonus points for the possibility of elaborate games of “doctor.”

Option 2: Echo and DeWitt

With Olivia Williams’ fencing abilities and Eliza’s residual Faith knife skills, they’re a match made in stainless steel heaven. Parry parry, thrust thrust, indeed.

Option 3: Sierra and November

The two wronged-by-men dolls can find solace with each other, and the communal showers.

Option 4: Sierra and anyone female

Did I mention I’ve developed kind of a crush on Dichen Lachman? Because I have.

So, are you excited about Dollhouse’s coming out, so to speak? Oh, the possibilities.

I still think it was a mistake not to make the Olivia Williams character a lesbian, or at least bi (assuming she isn't). Any gay content will certainly be welcome, though.

All these gay storylines turn out the same... 1 episode of lameness and then they move on. Enough to turn me off watching them. The fact that it is a Joss show doesn't offer as much hope as you might think since I don't think he has the power to push through his ideas these days and has to bow to network pressure.

Although it'll probably be Katya that will have the 1 episode lesbianism. Thanks for lettin me know so I can watch out and avoid this daftness.

... But if I were the network I would listen to the man. They think they know best and mess around with his show for a half dozen eps and the ratings are so so. The leave him alone, and the story got better and a larger audience joined... Hmmm in that situation, who would you listen too?

Networks listen to their sponsors in such matters. I've liked the show well enough so far but it's not great but I'm switching off if they have any daft Ally McBeal style lesbian plots.

I think you're missing the point. They are dolls/actives. They have no sexual orientation beyond their current assignment—when on assignment. Most likely any exploration would happen with a client and an active. So it's not about developing long term lesbian, bi, or sexually ambiguous characters. The possible exceptions being Adelle or Claire; but technically Claire is also an active.

The only storyline, I see that could have longterm potential would be a Claire/Echo match; and as much as I'd love to see more yummy Amy/Eliza chemistry—I doubt if that would be the storyline.

And to be fair, that is what I think they've been missing anyway - they have even made mention of the fact that the dollhouse has a lot of gay clients, so it's weird that we haven't seen any of those.

My guess is that it will be Echo in at least one of the promised storylines. However, as much as I think it's lesbian content we need on tv, I think it's gay male content that the Dollhouse probably needs. I just think there would be more guys who would want a safe, forgetting, gay experience than women. And actually, a gay male, clearly sexual, storyline, could be really groundbreaking too, because most gay male characters on TV are effectively neutered.

The idea of authentic, respectfully dealt with same-sex relationships between men on US network tv is very exciting - as you say, most gay male characters are neutered, bi male characters don't really exist (that I know of). "Victor" and Nathan Fillion...? ;)

I worry about the whole lesbian or bi relationship between women being a one-off episode in which pretty people titillate men, but Joss Whedon has form for presenting female sexuality in complex and respectful ways, so I hope...

And I look forward to an authentic, respectfully portrayed trans character of whatever gender identity or orientation. Trans people seem to be wilfully ignored by mainstream tv (in the US and in the UK), which makes me want to spit.

While the dolls themselves may have their orientations and gender identities messed with, there's a great opportunity for a) clients to be represented as authentically queer and/or trans, and b) for issues of gender identity and orientation to be worked through via the dolls' responses to programming over the long term. It would be a shame to miss either.

I have a serious brain-crush on Joss, so he'd better not let me down!

Assuming it's with a doll and a client. Because in this case (unlike most one-offs like, say, the OC, where a main character inexplicably dates a girl for 3 minutes and then becomes straight again and it's never mentioned further), it SHOULD be a one-off - once the assignment is over, it's over and everyone forgets. So as long as it's done in a good way (and I think we can hope Joss knows how strong his lesbian fanbase is and that he shouldn't piss us off!), I think it'll be presented normally.

I would love to see a trans person too, though I actually am sort of okay with them being invisible - in some ways it's better than bad portrayals, and I feel that's mostly what they'd get...although there have been some decent one-off trans storylines for guest stars on shows like ER and SVU. And wasn't there a transwoman on Ugly Betty? I don't watch it, but I feel like I read something about it on here...because what would really be great is to have a main character on some show that just is trans - already transitioned, totally out, and ok with it - where their life doesn't revolve around being trans. Just like I always want, and rarely (with the semi-exception of Willow) get.

Oscartg, you've never watched Buffy have you? I actually have great faith in Joss for any gay storylines, or romances in general. He handles them better than any mainstream tv show writer. and as for bowing to the network pressure, Joss hasnt really been known for that either, so I guess we'll just have to see.

I was a big Buffy fan but that was a number of years ago and I don't think Joss has the same influnce. Dollhouse isn't the network star in the same way that Buffy was. I won't believe it will be halfway decent until I read it is on this site.

Hello! Echo and November. Didn't you see them hiding together in their jammies in "Needs"? Sexy sexy, and Eliza's only touching Miracle's shoulder. (Also, I hope hope hope that November will be back next season.) Echo and Dr. Saunders or maybe Dr. Saunders and Adelle would be good too.

But not Sierra with anyone. I wish she would leave the show and take Topher with her. I know I'm risking the wrath of Dichen Lachman lovers here, but I think she's a terrible actress and doesn't bring anything to the show except inappropriate footwear.

The more realistic option though (Because you're watching FOX!) is Echo/another doll having a one-time same-sex sexual encounter with a client for ratings purposes. But I am interested to see if the show suggests that sexuality is programmable. It has already hinted that it cannot be completely erased with Victor's attraction to Sierra.

But... but... Victor aside,

Aww. I'm sorry. I don't mean to hurt you. Opinions about Dichen Lachman seem to be very polarized in the 'Dollhouse' watching community, and I happen to be on the negative pole. Give me November, Adelle, and Boyd over Sierra anyday.

I think Saunders/Whisky has a potential to be gay. As for the other dolls, I don't think that they are going to be that way, unless they are imprinted to be lesbian.

I guess we have to put faith in Joss (which really isn't that hard if you remember his work on Buffy) that he will give us a satisfying storyline for the gays and lesbians to go "ga ga" over.
