Celebrities shut up (and strip down) for LGBT Equality

Celesbians, celebrities and supporters alike are taking it off and taking a stand for LGBT rights in photographer Adam Bouska’s “NOH8” Prop 8 Exhibition. In conjunction with Dallas Pride 2009, Bouska’s week-long exhibit (starting September 19) will include “straight and LGBT Californians,” both famous and not, with tape over their mouths to symbolize the end of LGBT-targeted hatred and violence.

The ultimate goal is to garner enough buzz and support in order to repeal Proposition 8 that passed in November 2008. Some posed in the buff to, uh, show America that nothing holds them back from fighting for justice! Or something like that. Among the subjects are musicians, parents, military personnel and politicians.

First, let’s take a look at some lovely lezzies that participated:

Out Comedian Suzanne Westenhoefer

Charlene of Gimme Sugar

Openly gay celebrity trainer Shawnee Harkins

Lesbian comic Erin Foley

Some other favorites:

Kathy Griffin and her Daytime Emmys

Actress Paula Miranda

Kim Zolciak from Real Housewives of Atlanta

Pop star Debbie Gibson

The campaign wants you to send in your photos too, so don’t be shy ladies. (Nudity optional.)

I don't get how tape over

I don't get how tape over the mouth symbolizes the end of violence against against gays. Something about seeing women with tape over their mouths just rubs me the wrong way.

I agree.

word

Perhaps if they were photographed taking the tape off it could at least be read as becoming unsilenced.  Or something.
letty-jane's picture

maybe...

i think its supposed to get you, supposed to make you uncomfortable- the way i think about it is like the silence of us not getting heard. We're being ignored, so we might as well have tape over our mouths.  like what we say doesn't matter anyway. i don't know if its about ending violence, unless its supporting nonviolence.
Lucy Lowrider's picture

I'd have to disagree

I don't necessarily agree. The message of this campaign is "Louder than words", the tape is a powerfull mean to express it. It's active passivism, and it works, it has drawn massive attention towards the campaign.

I understand...

....where you're coming from with the duct tape issue, but looking at the shots as a whole (men included) that thought isn't as obvious as when just looking at the single shots of only women. Also reading the website the duct tape is explained, on there it says (and I quote):

'Photos feature subjects with duct tape over their mouths symbolizing their voices not being heard...'

Which I hope is what people get from seeing the whole concept! I think as well, the fact that the women feature don't look scared or weak or intimidated or anything like that, they look strong, determined, like they need to say something, not like they are victums or anything :)

Standing up for our rights

These pictures are great, I think more A list stars should join in so it can get more exposure. Its awesome that even with their mouths covered their personalities shine. I agree with the tape over the mouth thing though, I don't get it either.

Atlanta is part of CA now?

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the support from an apparently straight woman, but I'm unclear as to how someone who is on the Real Housewives of Atlanta is a Californian.

Re: tape on women's mouths - I get what you are saying, but I suspect that if we were looking at the whole thing, which includes men as well, that might not seem the same. But I also do not understand how it stands for the end of bigotry either. It seems more like we are muting our own supporters.

ida b's picture

Maybe it's

because she's an especially committed supporter? She seems to be the only one whose nipples have been stopped from making their voice heard for gay rights as well...

I appreciate the sentiment of the campaign but agree that the symbolism of the tape on mouth (or whatever) doesn't make sense.

fallon ash's picture

I like the pictures...

I don't really get the tape either, but I love the photos, how they're sort of glossy, and he really brings out their eyes. And there are a lot of pictures of men with tape over their mouths as well, so...

Is there a master list somewhere? There are a *whole* lot of pictures, it would be nice to have an easier way of seeing if there's anyone in there one might recognize. I'm pretty sure I saw Jill Bennett and Cathy DeBuono, but then I accidentally scrolled further down and haven't been able to find them again.

The tape

According to the website, it symbolises "their voices not being heard".

Anyway, I like the photographs and the campaign, and it's great seeing how many people are getting involved.

NB. Masterlist seems to be here.

i think it's a wonderful project and i also hope that it gets more attention from celebrities who can spread the message even farther.

i love the noh8 campaign and

i love the noh8 campaign and i think its great that so many celebrities have joined the cause, but celebrities arent enough its all people in the LGBT community joining the effort and voicing their opinions that will get this moving forward.  I get the tape on the mouths but i think whoever said they should be removing it had a great idea.  The point being made that they are trying to silence the masses but ripping the tape off would send the message that they no longer can supress this and people are speaking out.  i personally find the kathy griffen approach the best I love her shes so funny too! I love seeing her mom carrying noh8 posters and picketting in a wheelchair sometimes its great!

They shouldn't do this just

They shouldn't do this just for Cali but for all the states!

I hooray this campaign, and even tho I'm not American, let alone Californian, I'm gonna send in my pictures with my friends 2 :)

the tape

I think the tape symbolized the enforced silence.
The lost of freedom to be heared.

It's like when you are forced to be quite about your rights, about the way you are treated and just take whatever it is in silence.  And they are probably is using this to gain attentions. Silence (on one's will) sometimes can be a very powerful tool.

I love the photos and what it stands.

Griffin and her Emmys

gave me a good laugh.

more people should pose with their Emmy's and Oscar's (if they can steal one), somehow it will get more recognition. :P

Great Campaign

Who cares where any of these people or any of these celebrities are from or that some of us do not understand the tape over their mouths, nipples etc.  What is important is the idea and the effort that a few people took the time of day to express their concern for something extremely important in our community. Something that some of us have never even bother to do. Stop being critics and try supporting the cause, it can and may affect us all some day.

Cathy DeBuono uses her picture on her twitter profile so she has one for sure...surprised she wasn't mentioned here-she's a lovable lesbian for sure.

Jill Bennett and Cathy DeBuono both use their No H8 photos for their Facebook profiles, too.

Worthy Cause, but...

This is a very worthy and important cause for everyone to stand up for, celeb or not. I think it is a great idea on the part of the participants. However. First and foremost, like everyone is saying, what is the deal with the duct tape? I do not think that taping our mouths shut is sending the message of noh8. Secondly, the photos do not have the severity that the issue demands. while some people look very serious and tired of hate (Charlene for instance), others are making it all seem like a joke or something frivolous. What does an emmy award have to do with banishing hate towards human beings with right and what does vogue-ing have to do with the issue also? If I were a breeder, I would look at these photos as just another gay thing because it seems that some of the pics are more about fashion and looks than about banishing unfair and unjust treatment.

I'm not judging purposely. It's just that I am so ready for justice that I am lashing out. I agree, this is a great thing and I applaud the effort.

An Artistic campaign

Its an Artistic campaign!!!! Art can be expressed in many form whether its duct tape over their mouths, being bound or gagged with a bungy cord with the subjects laughing or smiling or crying or looking sad. At least the anti-gay community which is extermely vast and abundant knows that there are other human beings from the same walk of life as their own that support us, people with a different lifestyle, but the same common goals in life; loving the person we're with, having a family, equal rights etc. Its just the simple basic idea of this campaign. Stop sitting aroung and picking it apart by being an armchair critic, get up and do something productive and participate in not just this campaign but the local ones in your community that support LGBT RIGHTS...

Also my favorite is Gloria Allred's picture. I get emails from the site when they post new photos so I know that in her photo the hands tied in "red tape" are an actual interracial couple and she's cutting through the red tape. Love it!

Debbie Gibson?

Awesome!  I totally need to iTunes that lady up in support of her support.

Also, Erin Foley is hilarious.

I thought the tape was a great idea; though I was thrown for about a second. I don't know if this will make sense, but I'll try. Say being gay is like having lips, and in soceity people who have lips are considered abnormal, so what would you do? You'd tape your lips and live in hiding, without the strength to speak out and feel counted. And Prop8 stopped people who wanted to have their love legally respected from being counted; thus, the tape. lol if I sounded crazy I promise I'm not....

Anyway, looks cool, I hope some big faces get involved.

At first glance

I didn't get it either, but I think your explanation brought it home for me:) Thank You^. Beautiful Artwork, and although I'm nowhere near anything celebrity or celebratory, or wish to be one, love the idea, and have created one of my own, without duct tape. I Blame the Bush administration for that one. lol

I love this campaign

I think it's a great idea, and the more celebrities that get involved the better.

And also, may I just say that I love Susan Westenhoefer's eyes, they're very lovely and blue in that photo! :)

I hate to nitpick, but...

Kathy Griffin's Emmys are regular ol' nighttime ones, not daytime.  She got them for seasons three and four of"My Life on the D List."
FlSunrise's picture

Very SAD

It is sooooo sad that from this ENTIRE campaign that you only got night time emmys, my life on the D list. This is clearly not the forum for you. Please don't NITPICK if thats the only bright light that went OFF in your mind.

NOH8

A great campaign, and the master list that was previously linked shows the variety of individuals getting involved for this worthy cause.

I must say I am somewhat relieved that on the NOH8 photos they've not taped up baby mouths!

Shut up and do something

That’s one way of expressing the their point of view regarding to the Proposition 8 issue. I haven’t seen the photo of Tyra Banks. Does she have? Nevertheless, If you don't have something better to, you could always keep up with celebrity gossip – like this whole thing over whether Tyra Banks is engaged or not.  Tyra Banks herself denied it – she isn't engaged to boyfriend John Utendahl, and on her Twitter page declared that the ring she wears is her high school graduation ring.  (Some are surprised she's graduated high school.)  So now that the discussion is over – go out and do something.  Stop caring about Tyra Banks and find something yourself for your own fun.
