Mariska Hargitay gets sidelined from "SVU"

I about choked on my coffee this morning when I read the breaking news that Mariska Hargitay would be MIA from Law and Order: SVU due to her recent lung-problem relapse. Everything around me was a slow motion blur; time stopped, I felt numb and couldn't even begin to imagine another detective in my life.

But then, I continued reading the story on EW's Ausiello Files and realized she'll only miss a couple of weeks of work, which translates to just one episode. Seriously. The Emmy-winning actress just underwent a second surgery relating to the collapsed lung she suffered in January, and will only be missing from one episode, yet it's basically the most horrible, shocking news in television.

Obviously, we love Mariska Hargitay. Can you imagine any other actress causing such a stir by missing one episode of their show?

I mean, I'm already trying to plan what else I will do with my time on that Tuesday night. The kitchen cabinets could really use some organizing. Or maybe I should go through my closet to try to get rid of more stuff I don't wear anymore. Should I just leave the apartment altogether, as to not chance an emotional run-in with my TV?

I sort of feel bad for Ice-T. It seems like he misses at least every other episode, and yet there are never any news reports about his absence. While there's clearly no competing with Mariska, it'll actually be his chance to shine in her missed episode, "Baggage," as he's supposed to "step in for her." We'll see about that. However, Stephanie March will be there as well, as that will coincide with Alex Cabot's six-episode return (which starts tonight, by the way). She's no Mariska, either, but she'll do.

I'm not too shocked to hear the news she'll be missing an episode - she's been MIA for a few episodes before throughout the years where elliot and munch or one of the other characters partner up for the duration of a case. I just hope she gets better.

There's a cool procedure where they kind of "glue" the lung or the lining back in place. Sending good vibes her way. In the meantime, let the "March Madness" begin!

my mom's had surgery for collapsed lungs three times. the last time (in 2000) they did the 'old people' procedure and used the 'glue' which is made from talc.

come on.. poor mariska. hope she get better. because my one and only dream is to see her and stephanie march make out and other things on the show....hehe

I actually google this and this is what i found:

The primary cause of a pneumothorax(collapsed lung) is trauma to the chest cavity. A fractured rib, for example, could puncture the lung. In addition, penetrating trauma from a bullet, knife, or other sharp object can directly puncture the lung.

Sometimes, very tall, thin people are prone to a spontaneous pneumothorax. In this condition, the lung collapses after minimal or no trauma. Other risk factors are cigarette smoking and recreational drug use or abuse.

Let me compose myself after divulging that earth shattering news. LOL

Doubt if that has "pissed" any of her lesbian fans. Don't think that her fans are that fickle, or should I say, I hope that none of her fans are that fickle.

Oh please send to the writers, producers, etc. this request that Olivia and Alex get together. Honestly, it would be so believable these two characters are already like so many lesbian couples I know here in NY (not profession specific, but in general). I'd love it if what transpired was just a mere nod to say that they are in fact together and seeing each other out of the office, as if they have been for some time and just hadn't been broadcasting it. It could be as simple as someone who knows lets it out of the bag randomly and accidentally, a few people are surprised to find out, but not that they are two women together, just that they are together in general... as surprised as they would be to learn a man and woman in the office have started seeing each other and kept it quiet... I mean the show isn't mushy and about romantic drama, so why start now, why not just let it be acknowledged, then be there in the background coming up only when say there is a conflict of interest that relates to them being together, or when a birthday comes up and one of them organizes a surprise party with the team for the other... It would be very New York, work is work, private life isn't hidden but it doesn't get in the way of work because everyone's working so damn much, and with two strong dedicated professional women (who aren't still party age) there's no time for romantic drama. Hint 1: Check out Katja Nyberg and Gro Hammerseng (famous Norwegian Handball athletic couple) for clues on how to make it believable and show how the romance won't get in the way of work. Hint 2: My guess is Olivia would be the one more shy about publicizing affection, not ashamed of being with a woman, just shy about her private life and more afraid of her love showing on her face... my guess is Alex would be more direct and open about it, not a broadcaster, but less shy about letting her happiness with Olivia show a bit more often... which in turn would occasionally cause Olivia to suppress a smile. (Basically I see Alex as being more of the Gro and Olivia being a less awkward Katja) That's my dream scenario. Can someone send this to the writers, please!!!!

I'm laughing at the comments of course, not Mariska's health. I wish her all the luck in the world for a full recovery this time. I can't believe she is only missing one episode. I hope she's able to take care of herself first. And thank goodness for Alex. Tonight's epi had my head spinning the entire time. And the looks our girls were exchanging are the things of dreams.

...so good to have cabot back (and in fine form, i might add). and so good that the chemistry and the subtext are still flying all over the screen. can't wait to see what happens.

i have a friend that suffered from pneumothorax. nasty nasty nasty shit. he didn't have to have surgery tho, so i can only imagine how crappy mariska must be feeling. :(
