Counting down to the 2007 World CupThis year is a World Cup year in women’s soccer. You know what that means: We get to see Brandi Chastain take her shirt off. I'm sure you remember those photos of her with her ripped abs and her Nike sports bra.
I really would like to go off on a tangent about how freaking stupid all the media coverage was, but I won’t. Let’s talk soccer instead. The World Cup itself happens in September, but starting in June, the U.S. women play a six-game series leading up to the World Cup. A new video on the U.S. Soccer website offers an introduction to the current women’s team. The video opens with Abby Wambach, wearing a tight hooded sweatshirt and a pair of dog tags. Later we see Briana Scurry talking about her major talent: She's "good with her hands."
Unfortunately, the video doesn't really include any substantial information about the women, either as soccer players or as people. I mean, it’s great to hear that a player likes to go to Cold Stone Creamery on a Saturday night, it really is, but I feel like I’ve seen better videos. Here's a list of the current players on the U.S. women’s team. These women don't have guaranteed spots on the World Cup team; they just have a shot at qualifying. I remember staying up all night
"I'm sure you remember those photos of her with her ripped abs and her Nike sports bra."
Photos?! I remember staying up all night to watch the match! Back then the entire tournament was aired on Dutch tv - these days it's just high lights. When I'm lucky. But, really, I stayed up all night; I think the final match aired at 3 am. But let me tell ya I was glad I did :) (Up till that point Birgit Prinz was my favorite football player...) Brandi's winning shot was gold... And when she ripped off her jersey I thought I'd slide off the couch into a puddle on the floor. Heh.

Amby Wambach, yes please.
Portugal!!! & Eurosport
lol captainsam... Yeah Wambach can make lesbians lose their speech ability.
Hey, thats my country!! And the weather on that video doesn't seem so good :P What month was that from? I've seen other videos on their website with them eating pastries in some restaurant in Algarve (south of Portugal) also... It's great how they post those videos.
If you're from Europe and have access to any of the Eurosport channels, GET IT!! They air women football several months a year. They cover the Algarve Cup, World Cup, European Cup, senior and under-19s. And whatever else i don't remember. Live and re-aired the next day. ;)
Hmm...
If pictures are worth a 1,000 words, then between the two of them, "FLAMING" has been written 2,000 times.
Love it.
It's unfortunate that
OMFSM!!!!
:: yay for soccer!! ::
Yay
Man....
I don't know why but I just can't gather the same excitement I feel during men's World Cup. I grew up screaming "goal" and my heart palpitates when I see the big YELLOW AND GREEN, but when it comes to watching the women's division, I couldn't be more lukewarm. The only reason I know Brandi Chastain and Mia Hamm is because of the finals. Maybe because my country doesn't have a decent football team for the women's division? Who knows. Please keep us posted on the progress, AE. Who will be the underdogs? Who has the greatest odds? Who are the faves to win? (Does anybody care that much?)

I've been to the Algarve!
memories -- I've been to Lagos, the part of Portugal the ladies went to. It's supposed to be a total beach town, but the weather was as poopy as it was in the video.
