Spashley fans rock the "South of Nowhere" Appreciation Conference

As Malinda mentioned in her Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. column last friday, AfterEllen.com Editor-in-Chief Sarah Warn and I were invited to speak on a panel at the South of Nowhere Appreciation Conference in Los Angeles this weekend. The conference was designed to get viewers of the show together for the first time to share their experiences, as well as allow the SoN audience to show the cast and creators of the show some love.

South of Nowhere stars Mandy Musgrave, Gabrielle Christian, Maeve Quinlan, Eileen Boylan, Matt Cohen, Quentin Prescott Price, and Valery Ortiz attended, as did former SoN executive producer Nancylee Myatt and SoN writers Paige Bernhardt and Chad Fiveash.

The audience was a rambunctious group of SoN devotees — or more to the point, Spashley devotees. Every time Mandy or Gabrielle entered the conference room (or were even rumored to be within 50 feet of the conference room!) the fans erupted in cheers. And yes, the attendees were almost all female.

The panel that Sarah and I sat on was devoted to SoN's impact on the media and how it fits into the larger context of lesbian representation in pop culture. We were pleasantly surprised by the strong turnout for the panel (it was celebrity-free, so we didn't know how many people it would draw) and audience members had some great questions and suggestions for ways we could increase the Spashley love on AfterEllen.com. Sarah said a lot of insightful things and I mostly just made the occasional wiseass remark. Yep, just another day at the office.

Afterwards, we did a meet and greet, signing autographs and taking pics with devoted AfterEllen readers. Thanks to everyone who came over to say hello!

Conference organizer Gloria Brenes told me, "This was a wonderful experience, not just for me, but for everyone. The charity, the organizations that came to speak, the cast and creators in attendance, and most especially, the fans of the show. The most rewarding part I think for all of us behind the scenes was watching the fans having so much fun and raising money for SIDS Educational Services. In the end, after all the hard work that went into putting this conference together, it was so very worth it. We can't wait to do it again!"

In addition, the event (and auction of SoN swag) benefited SIDS Educational Services (a non-profit organization led by Joani Horchler, mother of Gabrielle Christian), raising about $6,000 for the cause.

Thank you.

Thanks again to frakin08 for bringing the conference to those of us in middle america and beyond.  The vids make me down right giddy no matter how many times I've seen them.  Mandy writing notes and spinning the mic stand was priceless; as is her need to "touch something".  Gabbs still makes me swoon.

*laughs*

Guess, I'm stalking you now... Is it wrong that I found Mandy's fidgeting completely, utterly adorable and endearing?

Oh, and *bows before frakin08*

~It means pride.~

*giggles*

:P   Stalk away...   Its nice having company.  How are we the only two commenting here so far?  LADIES!  Where are you?  *goes to find out*

I'm a 24 year old asshat,

I'm a 24 year old asshat, who watches South of Nowhere reruns on her ipod, while on the train to work. I wanted to take my 14 year old sister to LA for this conference, which makes me feel like a bigger asshat. And also, I want to have babies with Mandy Musgrave...somebody slap me.
playthemusic814's picture

I will not slap you.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to have babies with Mandy. Nothing wrong at all.

~It means pride.~

24 and there

I'm 24 years old and love SoN. I went to the conference and was by no means the oldest fan there! It is ok to be in your twenties and love SoN. It is a good show.

BTW: You sooo can't have Mandy, because she is mine. MINE I tell you, and I have the pics of us together at the conference to prove it. Plus she gave me a hug on Saturday and Sunday. *faints at the memory*

:o)

It's got its cheesy moments,

It's got its cheesy moments, but I would say that it's good, also. It's definitely this generation's Dawson's Creek, though... which isn't a bad thing, but probably comes across like it.

Yeah, you two soooo weren't the oldest.

Mandy hugs...yum!

When are they coming back?

Like Bad Girls,I've never seen an episode of SoN.  Basically SoN is a guilty pleasure for me! I mean I could be their mother very easily, and still enjoy every recap of SoN I can read!  I haven't gone as far as downloading it from iTunes because that would be proof of how pathetic I can be at my age! Oh well...

son itunes

I know of several women in their 40's and 50's that watch S.O.N.   There should be no shame in it.  Its good story telling (on the part of spashley anyways.)  Season one is definitely worth viewing.  Plus, by downloading from itunes it shows support to the show; since they will never give it to us on DVD.

Oh just download away

I did, and I am an old fahrt.  You are not alone in enjoying this "guilty pleasure".

Did anyone see

That Gabrielle Christian was wearing a Girltrash t-shirt in the photo with Gloria Brenes.. very cool....  Great article by the way.
simenus82's picture

Actually, I think they were both

(Mandy and Gabrielle) wearing the shirt... In the picture above Mandy is wearing the exact same thing...

girltrash

Maeve was wearing her girltrash t-shirt as well.  And might I say she was looking mighty fine in it.  There was one vid at the beginning of a panel where she was standing and that thing looked painted on.

I'd like to see the afterellen panel as well if anyone finds a copy.

Reign's picture

yup

Gabby and Mandy both were wearing girltrash shirts. Gabby was wearing one with a picture of Mandy on it, and Mandy was wearing one with a picture of Gabby on it. They were so cute. Maeve was wearing one too. The shirts should be available now on the girltrash website www.girltrash.tv under merchandise.
wickedgrrl's picture

never knew

That's the first I've heard that they were wearing shirts with the other on it.  I could tell their was a picture on the shirts but not of what.  *sigh*  I just love them so much.

Thank you

Sarah at the ConferenceSarah at the ConferenceOn behalf of the crazy Spashley Devotees and Afterellen fanatics, I would like to say thank you to Karman and Sarah for attending the conference. We truly appreciated you guys coming out and speaking with us. Both of you were extremely understanding of our fanaticism, very informative and funny. For me personally, knowing that afterellen was going to be there was one of my motivating factors for shelling out the dough to fly straight across the country. (Knowing Gabby and Mandy were going to be there didn't hurt either, lol)

A few of us went to Pride Sunday morning, and had to haul butt, to get back in time for your panel. I really wanted to go to Pride since it would be my first one, but there was no way I was going to miss the chance to meet you guys. I just kept saying "I can't miss them, I can't miss Karman and Sarah!" I've never hailed a taxi and ran through a hotel so fast in my life. Thank you taking pictures with us and signing autographs. It was really one of the highlights of the weekend.

Oh and Karman will you please tell Sarah I am so NOT a trouble maker. :0)

p.s. Don't forget my podcast idea!

Karman and Sarah with some crazy SoN Devotees

Karman and Sarah

Ok so I tried two different ways to upload the pics....I don't know if it worked or not, but it's 3:30am and I need to get some rest. Maybe I will try again tommorow.

EDIT: thanks to whom-ever fixed my pics.

omfg

I was there, and I got to meet Sarah, but not you Karman! Next year, for sure! It was the best weekend ever, I've never been so happy in my whole life as when I got to take a picture with Gabrielle and Mandy. Just goes to show you why this program stands out!

East Coast

I think that they should have a SoN Conference somewhere on the East Coast..that way people who cant go to California, would have a better chance of being able to attend
FonFreaka.'s picture

Oh, I so wanna go next time!

Oh, I so wanna go next time! I recently became a SoN junkie and am counting the days until Aug. 10. Let's just hope that the show gets renewed for a fourth season... ...and all was well, and the world smiled.
