Which summer blockbuster will you line up for?

Yes, summer doesn't officially begin until June 21, but the folks in Hollywood like to start things off early, so the summer blockbusters season is officially beginning. Last year, movies like Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third, Transformers, Ocean's 13 (and many others) took a lot of people to the movies, with total ticket sales amounting to almost $10 billion. This year, the grand total may not be that much, but with a little help from the following movies, it's likely to come close.

Here are the blockbusters you should watch out for, starting this week:

Speed Racer (May 9)

The cartoon series Speed Racer was a very successful adaptation of a Japanese anime originally called Mach GoGoGo. Still, I wouldn't make a movie out of it, but the Wachowski brothers thought it was a good idea. I really liked watching the show when I was a kid (seriously, how gay am I?), so I'm curious as to how they're going to adapt it. I'm also curious to see Trixie (Speed's girlfriend), played by Christina Ricci. Go Speed Racer, go!

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (May 22)

Indiana Jones (and Harrison Ford) is finally back for the fourth film in the series. No, Indy doesn't have a cane yet, but we'll meet an older version of the character, obviously. However, the character I'm most looking forward to meeting (as are you, probably) is Agent Irina Spalko, the evildoer played by the lovely Cate Blanchett. Actually, she'll play a Soviet Union agent. How hot is that? Yeah, not much, I guess. But not so bad either, in a sexy dominatrix kind of way (see the pictures and you'll know what I mean.) They can certainly count on my 10 bucks!

Sex and the City (May 30)

The fabulous foursome is back for another round of cosmopolitans, four years after the series' finale. After much back and forth, the all four actors finally agreed to make the movie, in spite of those pesky rumors about Kim Cattrall's unwillingness. Whatever happened, I'm glad they decided to make the movie, because I really missed Samantha's craziness, Miranda's sarcasm, Charlotte's cuteness and Carrie's annoyingness.

Kung Fu Panda (June 6)

This movie is based on a true story about a panda who worships Jackie Chan. OK, maybe not. It's about a panda who learns martial arts for ... well, fighting, I suppose. (And Jackie Chan really is in the movie!) There are other animated movies coming out this summer, like Wall-e, but I'll put my money on this one. And why? you ask. Well, because Angelina Jolie is in it. Yes, I do realize it's an animated movie! But she's playing a character called "Master Tigress." Isn't that, um, promising? Oh, whatever. Don't judge me. (Lucy Liu is also in the movie, playing someone called "Master Viper." Just as promising!)

Get Smart (June 20)

Get Smart was a fantastic '60s TV show with super secret agents Maxwell Smart and Agent 99. It was funny as hell and had an catchy theme song. If they keep those things in the movie, nothing can go wrong. Also, Anne Hathaway and Steve Carrell? Great choices.

Wanted (June 27)

Angelina Jolie and big guns. I'm there! Sure, it's a bit déjà vu, but what's not to like? Honestly, it's hard to get more entertaining than that, but the producers really wanted (no pun intended) to please the audience. So what did they do? Well, duh, they hired our very own Bridget McManus (Bridget worked as an assistant on the film)! There were also some talks for a special appearance by Baby Bridget, but the deal fell through. (Word on the street was that Jill Bennett didn't want Baby B. hanging out with Angelina.)

The X-Files: I Want to Believe (July 25)

Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) are back, and they want to believe. Well, maybe just Mulder. It's amazing how Scully saw the freakiest things in the world but, in the next episode, she was just as skeptical as ever! Anyway, I'm looking forward to this movie and to seeing Scully in her power suits, obviously. But how about a Scully/Monica Reyes reunion? Reyes would kick Mulder's ass in no time.

Which movies are you looking forward to seeing this summer?

    3. Wanted (Angelina Jolie AND Bridget McManus, can't go wrong with that combo)

    4. Get Smart

    5. Hancock

    6. Wall-E

    7. War Inc. (I'm a HUGE John Cusack fan and the trailer for the movie looks hilarious)

    8. The Dark Knight (Batman Begins marked the return of a good Batman movie and this one looks to be just as amazing).

    9. The X-Files: I Want To Believe (Mulder and Scully are back! Ever since 1993, I've been an avid X-files fan and own all 9 seasons on DVD so HELL YEAH I'll see this movie!)

    tiff's picture

I saw War, Inc. at Tribeca

I saw War, Inc. at Tribeca Film Festival this past weekend and it was, um, something else. I'm also a huge Cusack fan and was expecting something totally different. Hilary Duff was actually an interesting choice for the flick, I must say.
    Bek's picture

    Top two, plus a maybe.T

I can't wait for the new Indian Jones flick! I was a big time fan as a kid when my mum showed me the first three. I also am pretty excited about Get Smart, looks funny plus it's Anne Hathaway and Steve Carrell. I'll probably see Wanted, but just probably not in theaters (I'm still on the fence about spending 12$ to see a lot of violence..but Bridget McManus's apperance is making it more of a yes than no).

    Baby Bridget and Angelina

    Baby Bridget and Angelina ..hehe..

I just know, when I spot Bridget in Wanted, I will scream the theater down wisper to my best, but straight, friends Look, look! That's my dream wife the cool, amazing and so talented woman I told you about!!

Can you tell which movie I'm looking forward to see this summer (and that I totally love the strikethrough function) ?

    Indy...

one of my all time heroes.

And I'm curious about the new Mummy, although no Rachel Weisz, darn it...

    Forget Angelina!!!

Scottish wonder James McAvoy is going to be the most AWESOME part of Wanted.  I cannot WAIT to see him in a big American blockbuster!

I have a mancrush on James McAvoy....he is beautiful!

    my007's picture

    Indy, of course...

if you are as old as me, Indiana Jones is a must, I'd think. So, here goes my list:

    1. Indiana Jones: do I really need to explain?

    2. The Dark Knight: Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale made my favorite Batman up to now.

    3. Sex and the City: I say let's give them the benefit of the doubt. And also it's great that women between 42 and 51 carrie carry the movie.

Regarding the rest: Wall-E and Speed Racer might be fun, Wanted will probably be decently made...

    Nathiest's picture

    Iron-Man, Speedracer,

Iron-Man, Speed Racer, Prince Caspian, Hellboy 2, Indiana Jones, X-Files, Handcock, and Dark Knight. I will not go see Get Smart nor Wanted, but I might order them off of PPV.

I might end up seeing a few

I might end up seeing a few of these but none really make me feel like I need to run out and see them. Although I do like Anne Hathaway so Get Smart might possibly be on my list.

    definite mancrush on james macavoy....

wall-e is going to beat kung fu panda's ass...

get smart is just going to kick ass...

is it just me, or is 2007/2008 turning out to be the year of the good movies?

    psyco's picture

    This is my list...

1- The X Files - Damn I was a hard core fan of that show since 95 and I still watch the episodes. Mulder and Scully are my heroes!!! And a cant wait to see the second movie!!!

2- Indiana Jones - Indie is one of my all times heroes...he rocks I love the 3 movies and I know I´m going to enjoy this one, plus Cate Blanchet mmhhmm :-P

3- The Dark Knight - Christian Bale the best Batman ever, plus the excelent performance of Heath Ledger as the Joker and Michael Caine as Alfred...and another plus Katie Holmes is not in it!!!

4- Get Smart - I watch that show...well the re runs when I was a kid and I really enjoy it and with Steve Carrel and Anne Hathaway in it cant be bad.

5- Wanted - Angelina Jolie kicking some asses its never a bad thing especially because I love accion movies plus Bridget McManus!!!

6- Hellbo 2 - Guillermo Del Toro!!! plus Ron Perlman, Selma Blair and Rupert Evans. And because I love the first one :-)

7- Sex and the City - I loved that series...I really enjoy watching dose three women: Miranda, Carrie, Samantha and Charlotte.

8- The Incredible Hulk - I dont liked the first one but this looks much much better and I´m a big comic fan so.

"Duda que sean fuego las estrellas, duda que el sol se mueva, duda que la verdad sea mentira, pero no dudes jamás que te amo"

    glwtta's picture

    I don't really get Speed

I don't really get Speed Racer - is it really just a glitzy kids' movie? Not really what I associate with the Wachowski brothers/siblings.

The one I want to see most is probably Hellboy 2, mostly because I just realized that Hellboy is Ron freakin' Perlman! (I haven't seen the first one). Selma Blair certainly doesn't hurt either.

I'll probably see X-Files out of habit, and Cate Blanchett is looking pretty badass in Indy 4 (though the whole thing will probably wear pretty thin rather quickly).

As for the rest, all I've got is a big fat meh.

    Traveler's picture

    Kung Fu Panda

I just saw an ad for this & while I was only going to see the Indiana Jones in the theater, now I've got two reasons to sneak beverages into my town's one over-refrigerated mulit-plex. This looks like sheer, stupid, animated fun which I love in a summer flick.

Gotta see Indy. Harrison Ford, meh. But I love me some Indiana Jones & will even brave the sticky floors and ear splitting sound system to see him super-sized. I'm not even worried about how ancient he will look, my mancrush glasses will filter out the jowls, paunch and the myriad "you-should-have-worn-more-sunscreen-when-you-were-younger" age spots.

Speed Racer? Probably not. I was a Jonny Quest girl; hey, they went to "exotic" places, fought evil using science and the kid had two "dads"!

As for the rest, by the time I finally get around to getting my super-duper hi-def boob tube, they should be out on dvd.

    vdpro's picture

    Angie and Indy

I'll go to see Wanted since I'm huge Angelina Jolie fan and I absolutely love her in action flicks, kickin' a***s and looking fabulous as always. And of course, that means I'll watch Kung Fu Panda also, since Angie is giving voice and I loooove animated movies :)

And Indy is my all time favorite movie hero, so that one is also a must-see for me + Cate Blanchett is in it :)

    Exciting summer!

Indiana Jones, Get Smart, and XF2!!!!! I'm also looking forward to Dark Knight and a handful of other films. I haven't seen the previews for Wanted or Panda Fu, but I'm sure they'll be on my list as well.

I will try to catch Speed Racer at some point (if for no other reason than the Wachoskis [spelling is terrible lol]), I'm just not lining up to see it. My #1 this summer is XF2 - I'm waaaay too excited for it! haha

    Walle

I'm in love with Walle. I really am and the movie hasn't even come out yet. From the moment I saw the teaser for Walle, that tiny robot has had my undying love. It sorta weirds me out how much in love with him I am. It's a character in a movie I haven't seen yet I already feel like I have. Oh I's excited.

I'm also looking forward to watching Hell Boy 2. Ron Perlman was superb in the first one. He added the right amount of comedy, humility, and charm to a character that at first glance frightens you but you can't help but love him. I feel bad for Selma's charcter though. She's a firestarter that never seems burn through her clothes. I love magic.

    Then...

Sex and the City ~ my mom and I use to watch the show together when I was 13.

    Dark Knight ~ I'm curious

    Hancock ~ I'm a Will Smith fan.

I might go see Indy 4. I wasn't born yet when the first 2 came out and was to young for the 3rd. I'd like to see at least one in the theaters.

I'll wait to see everything else when they come out dvd or show up on cable.

    Indy

    X-Files
    In order of release, no?
Actually, and this is kind of funny, but my entire family, including my parents, are going to see Indy the weekend of release. My father hasn't been to a theater since he ditched work and lied to mom and went to see Braveheart twice in one day on his own. A real charmer, that one, since he made her wait until it came out on video to see it. But maybe that was wise. She prefers to stop the movie right after things get dicey and before they literally get dicey. Maybe what he did was somehow thoughtful and kind, sparing mom the harsh realities of a Hollywood interpertation of history.
    Nah.
It should be a fun family outing when Indy opens. I know that my sister already has her mini bottles of vodka ready to dump into the 4 dollar Mountain Dew. God I love her. She's so willing to be preposterous and a mess when it could be me carrying that heavy load. I'd make her a tea cozy if I knew how to knit.

    Harrison Ford

does age so nicely, no? For me, anything with a superhero or a pretty girl does it.  I saw Catwoman and Elektra, too, both super and women.  More like that pls, but better.  I wish there was a new Charlie's Angels movie coming out.

    get smart and wanted!

Wanted all the way, because Angie is beautiful and can do no wrong in my eyes! Plus I actually think it is an engaging plot. I have been looking forward to this movie for a while now. Also, Get Smart. Steve Carrell is hilarious, and I will watch anything with Anne Hathaway in it!
    "T. Obia"'s picture

    X-FILES!

Definitely not SEX AND THE CITY. You couldn't pay me enough, although I like Christ Noth in Law and Order, this sort of parade I will not be attending.

However, X-FILES!!! Yes! And maybe WANTED, but honestly, it looks like a typical summer action/meathead flick with all the trappings of over-the-top car crashes, Jolie sex-ploitation, and crappy writing. Am I being to judgmental? Morgan Freeman is in it, this could be promising. And of course, AngieJolie. But X-FILES!!!!! ARGH!! Oh my goodness, yes! Gillian Anderson is yum....

I was a huge fan of SPEED RACER growing up and THE MATRIX (as much as it is parodied now, was an incredible series, irregardless of how it went totally Christ-Figure on me towards the end of the story line). That said, I am not entirely sure about the SR production. I know its garnered towards a younger audience and it has Christina Ricci and Susan Sarandon, I'm really not that interested. I might take my little brother to see it, though.

I'm not even considering Indiana Jones. At all. Sorry Shia.

    Kung Fu Panda

I want to take my nephew to see Kung Fu Panda. He likes animated movies and it's sort of my way of sharing my love of the movie theater experience with him... and I just want to see a Panda doing Kung Fu.

    I definitely want to see

I definitely want to see Sex and the City - can't wait for the hilarious Samantha antics and one-liners. And the X-Files - well Gillian Anderson out of 19th century garb and back into tailored suits equates with yum.

I used to love Speed Racer when I was a kid so if I get time I'll head to see that.

Will check out The Hulk sequel also - no, still haven't seen Iron Man due to night shifts.  Really looking forward to the return of Karen Allen (Indiana Jones).

You know who they should have cast opposite Christian "Batman" Bale?  Kate Beckinsale.  They've been in two other movies together and have great chemistry imo.  Mind you, anything would be a welcome change from Katie Cruise Holmes...
