"The L Word" bringing back Tasha, Jodi, and Phyllis -- kicking Papi to the curb?Showtime has just announced that Tasha, Jodi and Phyllis will be back next season on The L Word. Marlee Matlin is continuing her role as a series regular, Cybill Shepherd's returning at guest-star status, and it's unclear how involved Rose Rollins will be.
No mention of Janina Gavankar, so I'm guessing that means Papi won't be back. Thank God! Gavankar seems nice enough, and she's not a bad actress, but I don't think I can handle another season of bad slang and even worse hats.
I do think the show could use more tractors, though. How cute is this?
And maybe some more yellow rafts for Jenny. With holes in them.

oh I hope we get to see lots
oh I hope we get to see lots of Rose Rollins!!! mmmmmyum.
and while I like Janina, Papi as a character was just too... flat. and unnecessary. so it's good news to me if she doesn't come back.
ppl coming back
Rachel Shelley is not listed on the press release either!
Dear Sarah,
I realize that Janina was not listed on the press release, but also absent was Rachel Shelley's name among the main cast list. I recall Sarah Shahi's name not being listed either on Showtime's press release about Season 4.
It could be an oversight or a sign they have written off the character of Helena. As a Helena/Rachel Shelley fan I would be crushed if that were the case. Is there any way that you can find out if Rachel will be in Season 5?
Thanks,
BB
Rachel Shelley is Returning
Aww
I was banking on Papi or rather "Eva Torres" returning because it could have opened up a story where Carmen returned....i won't give up so easily though lol
spew!
must cybill shepard come back?? good hell. her grotesqueness makes me cringe in fear. she's just a really, really, really bad actress. her character is not the least bit funny. just pretty pathetic. although she did start toughening up towards her husband in the end. but seriously, it was hard to decide who was more pathetic -- cybill's character or that ed begley, jr.-lookalike.
spew!
my respect for the show overall, though, has started to taper off. leisha hailey and jennifer beals have been holding it all together pretty well, but with the pathetically poor story-lines, it's hard to see how the show will continue to hold my attention next season, if at all. tina's wishy-washy, jenny's schizo, kit is dreary, and angus needs to be slapped out of the show, period. helena . . . i absolutely adore rachel shelley -- but seriously, can she finally get a slightly better story arch? her character was much richer during season 3, when you see her falling in love with dylan and also having more comedic turns.
i wasn't a papi fan. good riddance!
-------------------------------
Botox = bad acting.
i disagree
rewind through her entire acting career and you can see varying degrees of her "wooden, botoxed performance." no variation. if your acting looks the same throughout your entire body of work, then that's not talent.
cybill shepard does whiny well enough. but that's about the end of her repertoire.
----------------
Hasta la vista, Papi. Hola, Ms. Dewey!
"her (Helena's) character was much richer during season 3..."
*lol* You can say that again! Both figuratively and literally. *g*
IMHO TLW needs fewer one-dimensional caricatures, not more, and the character of Papi was so thinly drawn - even after twelve episodes - I won't be sad to see her go.
If indeed Janina does depart, that is. In my experience, neither TLW or Showtime tend to pay all that much attention to detail and factual accuracy, so the omission of Rachel Shelley and Janina from the cast list in the press release could just be an oversight.
As for Papi's ridiculous headgear... It's one thing for Jamiroquai's Jay Kay and Justin Timberlake to be labouring under the misapprehension that wearing a jauntily angled hat automatically imbues you with personality, but TLW's writers and producers should have known better and actually written one for Papi rather than leaving it up to the wardrobe department to graft one on as an afterthought.
(What was it with the hats this season? As if Papi's titfers weren't sufficiently criminal to have Philip Treacy considering a career change, we also had Annabella Sciorra/Kate Arden wearing a flat cap last seen atop the noggins of such renowned style gurus as Frank Butcher and Harry Enfield's Mr. You Don't Want to Do It Like That!. Based on this season's fashions, I confidently predict that string vests will have a strong presence in S5 (which should be interesting given that few cast members ever wear bras) and that Whippets will replace Pomeranians as the dogs du jour. *g*)
Quite frankly, I'd rather watch Janina as Ms. Dewey, than as Papi. It may only be a search engine, but I've found it to be a great deal more representative of Ms. Gavankar's considerable talents and charm than Papi has been, or ever will be as long as she's being written by Ilene et al.
I hope Papi stays
all hope's not lost
Papi should stay
I liked Papi
Papi is someone that a select few people can identify with. She portrays cool but at the same time over-doing it for no one elses sake but her own. But she was also fun, when she is not annoying the hell out of you. It also seemed as if she was starting to calm down on the annoying part of her coolness, and I was starting to like her. "weep"
Yes, no more Papi!
JG is nice but Papi was the worst character on the L word EVER.
BRING BACK CARMEN!!!!!!
I want some more PAPI
Yes I said it. I like the fact that the character was less annoying at the end of the season. But if they can let us know more about her than her ridicolous over doing PIMP ways, I'll realy appreciate it. The fact is that i can't forget Alice's face under Papi's spell LOL "Circle are good papi, circle are good" One of the best scene of the entire season 4.
OK I want less Papi and more EVA. Plus if I have Eva that means I may have a Carmen comeback. And I want to see Carme back. Since Paige won't be back, having Carmen on the story line make sence. I'd have Eva (not Papi) dating Carmen again (they use to date back in highschool). And Shane .... It would be FANTASTIC.
I want more of Papi/EVA. And Tibette BACK. I don't feel any physical chemistry between Jennifer Beals and Marlee Matlin.
Papi
Papi is hot, her character is shit, but she was someone to look at as Carmen went
Mixed Feelings
I like Jodie and Tasha. Phyllis is boring and I'm not really interested in her storyline, to tell you the truth. I was just starting to like Papi! She was getting less annoying and more cute towards the end! Darn.

NO! NO! NO!
YAY
oh that is just great
that I have to continue watching Jodie...*sigh* I did not like the character and could easily live without seeing her again on the show. Same about Phyllis. I wanna see Tasha, but if Papi really is gone - which I'm finding not sooo good, cause I really liked her, aside that stupid playa thing and the ridiclious Kit storyline - than I can't really imagine her being in the group without Papi. I hope it's not true IC, but I guess you do, what you always do: only what you want.
stay !
Hey ! papi needs to stay because she's " eva torres " ! and something is suppose to happen between papi carmen and shane ! come on ! it should be the spiciest storyline of season 5!
Comme disait Jeanne D'Arc : " tu verras de quel bois je me chauffe " ;)
Papi must stay
I'm totally agree with you! That'll be the highlight and greatest story ever told on season 5.
Besides, we haven't even explore Papi's character yet. And Papi needs to be on the show for Tasha too.
*sigh*
The character of Papi needs
keep papi
I was most looking forward to Cybill Joining the l word and to me it has been a dissapointment.
Whereas Papi now that was a nice suprise, the character adds some flavour to the show.
She needs to stay
Eva Torres
Regardless...
...of how you feel about Papi, I don't know how you bring Tasha back without having Papi there too. Clearly, she was a integral part of Tasha's life and she helped bring her together with Alice.
Think about it for a second...
If they're bringing Rose Rollins back, they've got a few options, in terms of storylines: either she's still in Iraq and we're hearing from her and seeing her in that lens OR she's returned from Iraq. Option #1 seems unlikely, so I imagine they'll go with Option #2. So what happens then? Here are my best guesses:
1. There's a year or more between seasons, so Tasha gets to come back after completing her tour in Iraq. It'd make sense for Tasha (any service of less than a year seems implausible, given the status of our military) and Papi (it's conceivable that she could move in that time), but not for anyone else in the cast.
2. The military finds out that Tasha suffers from PTSD and sends her home early. Since the military is sending folks to Iraq whose doctors say they're medically unfit to serve, I think that's highly unlikely.
3. The military discovers Tasha's sexuality (which, I guess, means she cheats on Alice) and discharges her from her service. I'm not sure how likely that is, given Tasha's personality, but could IC resist the temptation to beat us over the head with this issue for another season?
4. Tasha gets injured. This seems most likely, but wouldn't it be weird to have that happen and have her best friend not be there?
Um, okay...I'm clearly thinking about this too much.
I'll admit I hated Papi for
ROSE!
So happy that Rose Rollins is coming back. She's beautiful, talented, and the Tasha and Alice storyline is fantastic--deep and moving and sexy. Let's hope they are the new long-term relationship (please don't say it's going to be Jodi and Bette! UGH!)
I could do without Marlee and Cybill, though I do think Cybill is funny, and didn't mind that storyline.
My bet is on Tasha getting "found out" before she even goes back to Iraq.
Papi? I don't think she's essential for Tasha's character (how many times were they in scenes together by the end of the season?), but I also don't think she's definitely out of the show. Maybe a few appearances and a weird explanation of her disappearance? Let's just hope there's some coherence in all of it. But I will miss her. TLW needed to get more color in its cast--and keep it.
Tasha
Papi
I agree.
Also, I thought Gavankar did a dead on impersonation of a very specific group of Latinas out here in LA...Almost all the writers at AfterEllen make fun of her style and slang, and I'm thinking, "That's how they talk! That's how they dress!"
Ah Boo!
In the beginning I hated Papi because of how she's written but I think Janina Gavankar adds to her character. Must she be written as this "player" and played up to "battle" Shane but not really? Papi is more likeable to me since I do like the actress so I wouldn't mind her staying. Also Papi and Tasha have a nice friendship going. How are they going to get rid of Papi? Like how they got rid of Mark which was that he disappeared into the ether and never heard of again? I hope that doesn't happen.
But YAY! Rose Rollins! <3 Tasha/Alice
but um..
..if they get rid of Papi don't they gotta do somethin to fill that quota? i mean i'm just saying,
I like the actress who plays Papi and i want to see her in other things. For the record her hats and her hairdos were always lookin fly in my opinion, but yes the talking, oh the talking..I could live without that.
News that makes my day :D
I like the *idea* of Papi
Seems to me as if the Papi character could have been much better written. It is almost as if they edited out some part of her character background (maybe sanitized?) that would've made Papi more of a person, as opposed to a generalized persona.
I really like the actress, and if they bring her back, I hope the writers amp up her character and give the actress something to work with; the whole "Kat and Papi" almost-thing could've been much more poigant if the character of Papi was more developed (and that is a writer probelm, not an actress problem in my opinion).
Cybill is hilarious; and her botoxed out the butt look only adds to the insecurities that a woman like the Dean would have to deal with. I LOVE Marlee but I'm not overwhelmingly crazy about Jodi (she's kinda boring ot me), but I really like her snarky interpreter (so keep her around to keep him around, okay).
Definately More...
Tractors! Especially with Jennifer Beals on the back!
Yeah, Papi was just plain annoying.
I found Phyllis slightly annoying too. But I looooove Jodi. She's cute :)
I <3 L word.
xox
Helena, where for art thou?
Quite honestly the new ladies to the show, returning or not doesn't effect me much since they are newbies...I am not really attached, yet. Having said that though, I did get attached quickly to the character of Dylan in Season 3. It would be great to have Alexandra Hedison back!
What I am really concerned about is Rachel Shelley's name missing from Showtime's list of The L Word's regular cast! Could someone please confirm whether or not she will be on the show in Season 5? Thanks, very much!!
At least they are not killing Tasha!
lesbian without borders
I'm glad I'm not watching my weight....
cause I just LOVE me some clotted cream, salty seeds and bananas!!! I hope Tasha is back to STAY....LOVE>>>LOVE>>>LOVE>>> Alice and Tasha together!!
Phyllis...I can take or leave on any given day.
Jodi...go AWAY....cock-blocker!! She can hang around for maybe 3-4 episodes...after that...bring on Bette & Tina...these two have the best on-screen girl-girl kiss I've seen to date (see Season 2, ep 9).
Papi...I dig her!! Her character needs SERIOUS development, but it wouldn't be right not to have her there if Tasha's returning...and she's HOT!!!
And...for ALMOST...the last time: BRING BACK CARMEN....PLEASE!!!!
As much as I love Marlee
As much as I love Marlee Matlin, if getting rid of her meant Tina and Bette were to get back together again, I could live without Jodie. At first I love Jodie and Bette but once Bette and Tina became closer as the season went on I realize that Bette and Tina need to be together because I absolutely love them together. I agree with someone who said that Jodie and Bette don't have too much physical chemistry, I see that now.
As for Papi, in the beginning yes, I hated her. But as the season went on I didn't mind her. If she stays great, if she doesn't it's nothing I'm going to lose sleep over.
SHO
I basically said the same
yeah!
Also am glad about Tasha, she and Alice are just perfect together!
I suppose we're in the
I suppose we're in the minority, but I - and my girlfriend - think Marlee Matlin is possibly the most annoying actress ever. I have mild-to-moderate fond memories of her on Picket Fences, but Jesus, these days she grates at me in everything she does. GRATES. WITH A GRATER. Papi was way more tolerable to us.
Season five? Needs more Tasha, less everyone else.
Hooray for Jodi!!
I love Jodi's character, and regardless of whether or not she and Bette stay together, I'm so happy she's staying!!
I really hope that they incorporate her more with the rest of the group this season!!
And as for Phyllis - hopefully "guest star status" means little screen-time.

HUH?
Let me get the straight (not really)
is carmen coming back or im just misreading some comments here?
Some of this is good news
The show needs much more of Tasha's character, especially the fun times between her and Alice. Papi sort've grew on me as the season went on, especially when she was just hanging out with the girls, like in Alice's bedroom when they we're helping out Phyllis's husband. Jodi needs to go away, there is no chemistry between her and Bette and even if Bette and Tina don't get back together, I hope they find someone else for Bette. I also hope Carmen comes back, at least for a few episodes, I was sad and disappointed when she didn't show up last season. I miss Erin Daniels every single episode, but I'm not sure i'd want her back as a ghost??? I hope Helena is back, I liked the friendship her and Alice had early in the season.
Kristana Lokken is a hottie, but she was so much bigger then Shane physically it didn't do much for me. It will be fun to see who they have as guest star next year.
The chemistry between Bette and Tina just shines whenever they are together.
Maybe Jenny can stop and pick Max up and they can sail away together some where far, far away.
MUST SEE MORE JODI
I love her in the The L Word
I thought is was very sexy how her and Bette acted together
They were very sexy YUMMY
Just one simple question
