Go home, Frau Blücher -- you old gray mare

Mel Brooks thinks Cloris Leachman is too old. Well, not in general, but too old to do eight shows a week. Even though Brooks himself is almost 81, he thinks the 81-year-old Leachman might hurt herself if she reprises the Frau Blücher (insert horse whinny here) role in the upcoming Broadway musical version of Young Frankenstein.

Leachman, of course, thinks that's horses---. Apparently she has asked Variety columnist Army Archerd to help her convince Brooks to give her the role. According to Archerd's website, Leachman is "heartbroken." Who can blame her? She was perfect in the movie.

I don't care what Brooks' reasons are — would anyone ever express such "concerns" about a male actor? Nah. (Christopher Plummer, anyone? Those hills are almost dead with the sound of music.) And anyway, Vanessa Redgrave and Angela Lansbury are both handling eight shows a week with no problem. I think Brooks just has a rotten brain. "It's rotten, I tell ya! Rotten!"

There's one good bit of news about the new Young Frankenstein, though: Megan Mullally will take on the role of Elizabeth, played by Madeline Kahn in the movie. We miss you, Madeline.

    *sigh*

    I love Vanessa.

When she calls my name, I turn and in that instant I lose my heart. This is the love of my life.

    in this corner we have....

Yes, we seriously miss Madeline Kahn.  Her rendition of “I’m Tired” as Lili Von Shtupp in Blazing Saddles was nothing short of brilliant.

While Megan Mullally is a great stand-in for Elizabeth,  I can’t imagine anyone but CL as Frau Blücher.  Shame on Mel...

    From the NYPost:

"Cloris challenges Mel to three rounds in the ring, and we'll see who's left standing," Leachman's rep, Steve Rohr told us.

mmm madeline was great wasnt she

What about Sarah Paulsen for Madeline - same overbite and cheeky look. Mullaly is too OTT
    Melissa Hsu's picture

    yes, but...

I wasn’t thinking of Megan as Elizabeth for her physical appearance so much as the fact that she IS so OTT – just like Madeline.  Totally unabashed.  While I like Sarah Paulsen, I just can’t see her doing justice to the role like Megan.

    yes megan can do funny

in an irritating one joke way but she's not sexy. Madeline was sexy funny - and I think Sara Paulsen could do funny vamp too.

    That's sexist!

I can't believe Mel Brooks! He should give her an oportunity at least! Besides, she was incredible! And now most likely she'll be even better at it!Madeline was amazing.  But I can imagine Mullaly with that hair.  Young Frankenstein and High Anxiety are my faves of Mel Brooks. Cloris is the perfect actress for any comedic role!!

    Is 81 the new 40?

I hope I have that amount of energy when I'm 81. Cloris Leachman rocks.

    Age descrimination..

Actually, Mel set himself up for an slam dunk Age Descrimation law suit by flat out saying why he didn't hire Cloris. Seems like he's smarter than that. It makes me wonder if maybe insurance companies didn't put the kabash on Ms. Leachman, and maybe he made the statement to give her a big fat balloon to pop. Just a thought.

    The federal age

The federal age discrimination statute only protects those ages 40-70, I believe.  Maybe there' s a state law that is broader, though.  It's too bad, though.  I have always loved Cloris Leachman in anything she does.

    Shame On Mel

I wonder if he's intimidated or something... sheesh... men!! Speaking of Cloris has anyone of you seen/remember the movie Scavenger Hunt with Cloris in it. It's a (comedy of course) film back from 1979. I swear that it's the funniest movie I have seen in all my life thus far. I've been trying to get my hands on it but to no avail....woe is me.... She's still a knock-out at her age... shame om Mel.

It was a more than tactless excuse...

...but I suspect he was actually trying to be tactful. I don't ordinarily gossip, especially about people I don't myself know, but word in the industry, that's even gotten back to me in my little isolation chamber, is that Ms. Leachman is - how to put it - incredibly difficult, even unpleasant, to work with. And she's not popular enough these days to spark rumors for their own sakes.

Pity. I loved her in "Kiss Me Deadly"

    I have always loved Cloris

I have always loved Cloris Leachman.  Mary Taylor Moore reunion, please?
