Kathy Griffin tackles Prop. 8 on "My Life on the D-List"Last night on My Life On The D-List, Kathy Griffin tackled Prop. 8 and baked cookies with Melissa Etheridge's family.
The episode was filmed not longer after Prop. 8 passed in California, and Griffin introduced it like this:
The best part of the scene is Griffin's post-production narration. Over shots of Etheridge and Tammy baking cookies with their kids, Griffin says:
Next, Kathy was off to a class to learn how to canvas the community before the Prop. 8 rally.
She says she's never actually been canvasing before because: a) She's not a Jehovah's Witness, and b) She's too famous. Not surprisingly, they send Griffin out with an actual lesbian with some experience going door to door: So, there's this woman that's coming along with me because they're afraid of the s--t I'm going to say to bigots — and they should be. Finally, Griffin gives a pretty rousing speech at a Prop. 8 march.
Say what you like about Kathy Griffin, but in her post-march interview when she said, "We know we're not done" I really believed the "we" part. Also last night, Jane Lynch — who I am beginning to believe is more ubiquitous than Ryan Seacrest — apparently made a guest appearance to bid on some lesbian cookies. My DVR mutilated it, so I didn't get to see that bit, but you know our motto here at AfterEllen.com: The more Jane Lynch, the better. Did anyone else watch Kathy Griffin's Prop. 8 episode last night? What do you think about her as a straight ally? Thanks to RDG for the tip! Submitted by on July 28, 2009 - 5:00pm. |

Ok I totally want to watch
Ok I totally want to watch "The Etheridge Family"!!!
-I speak in random thoughts
proud moms!
i watch kathy's show
yay kathy! ^_^
I think shes the funniest gal around, always quick with the jokes and has a huge heart. I know some find it hard to believe that behind all the swearing, dick, pussy and jesus jokes theres this amazing human being. Kathy you totally rock! =D
And if you dont like kathy...suck it =P.
i love me some kathy.
HAH!
HAH! I was right that was Jane Lynch in the audience....No one believed me. Well, that just made my day.
I heart Kathy Griffin and was so inspired by that episode and how committed she is.
looooove her,
she's always been so supportive of gay rights, and her little speech and the shots of the crowd after were beautiful. activism isn't just a good way to meet cute women =p, it's very powerful and this episode emphasizes those aspects after it's done being hilarious.
you gotta love anyone who tells jesus to suck it. go kathy griffin!

Man may I say some of these pictures got Kathy's good side!
Man may I say some of these pictures got Kathy's good side!...
Because usually she looks alittle too botoxed for my liking.
But honestly I resontly moved from Canada to California and my parents are mormon so I had to find out not only did prop 8 passed but that my parents strict christian church helped.
I have seen so many yes on prop 8 pictures on facebook that I almost wasnt surprised when I saw this guys photo [Who I already found out was well, Kind of thought gays were unexceptible] In the middle of a no on prop 8 protest with his buddy sporting yes on 8 signs
Honestly I agree with some of the no on prop 8 ads
But Im around people who have gay friends and surport them just not there disitions and think its not exceptable to get married
And this is from the same people who get married in a temple with suronded by only people who are apart of our church and have a pass saying they are holy enough to watch there friends get married FOREVER
Like most people just want to have Marriage till death that way it doesnt get convusing after death
(Umm... will I be a pyligamist if I have more than one spouse after death?)
But America isnt open to change. I mean with the help of celebrities we helped Obama win. But this was after I heard so many people complain about bush and he won again.
So Honestly I think if gay marriage wasnt so public that maybe people would be open to it because theyde have an easier time selding there children from it
So If I become an American citenzen I will vote no on prop 8 when Im 18 [or whatever the voting age is]
And once I make some friends outside my parents church I am joining prop 8 protests and going to pride!!
off subject a little but...
Did anyone else catch her singing "Ebony and Ivory" to Al Sharpton? F-ing genius.
And, I admire her so much for how well she supports her gays. I love the quote about how different we are... making cookies with our kids and such :)
-We do not stop playing because we've become old. We become old because we've stopped playing.
i saw it
kathy rules. it was a pretty funy episode. and i thought that woman in the audience looked like jane lynch. but i would have thought that jane lynch would have bid higher than the other woman for the cookies. are you sure it was her? i thought they would have featured her more if it was.
i also liked kathy's closing statement to the straight people out there - all seven of them.
i think the next prop should be written saying that all consenting, unrelated adults over the age of 18 have the right to enter into a marriage contract with whomever they chose.
grrr
i hate being in canada! i cant view these clips. :(

I love Kathy Griffin so much that....
I love Kathy Griffin so much that....I had her make a "cameo" in my novel. She is a great entertainer and ally for the gay community, but most importantly, she does this without being boring...or, God forbid, politically correct!!!

Youtube link for those outside the US...
kathy griffin
is awesome. this episode was good and i cant believe those gay youth didnt know who matthew sheperd was. i knew about sheperd when i was 11 when MTV did that made for TV movie about him. Goodness, how can they not know him?
Tammy looks like Hilary Duff to me.
i enjoyed how Griffin went from door to door asking about prop 8 and how did it actually affect people. the people said themselves "it wouldnt really affect me". see, maybe if people stop focusing too much on their religion(because no one is a perfect angel) and focus on the actual situation, it is really not all that horrible or frighten.
Good job, Kathy Griffin!!!! :)
Jane Lynch was there,
Jane Lynch was there, indeed. :D

Your DVR Can Suck It!
One of the funniest scenes was at the end when she was doing a benefit for the youth housing at the LA Gay and Lesbian Center. She was telling the crowd about her attendance at the rally Sacramento and how the signs all said LGBTQI and she didn't know what the I stood for. But then quickly said, whatever it is, I'm for it. She was so spoofing all the people who protest to much when they say they have nothing against gays and at the same time exuded sincerity that it really doesn't matter to her who you are in terms of your sexuality.
Also, I dont' think I have good gaydar, but I think I have awesome JaneLynchdar.
Kathy Griffin
is a beast! :D
I love me some Kathy Griffin. And I want to take her home with me... Pocket-sized.
wooh!
Sorry to say it.
I mean, I appreciate Kathy's efforts...
but my God, she annoys the crap out of me.
I love Kathy!!
Hooray for Kathy!
You need people like Kathy. So many celebrities are way in the closet behind all the shoe boxes and would rather live their lives as someone they are not than come out of their closets.
I wouldn't want to live and then die like that. Congrats to all the celebrities who have had the courage to come out. If you notice - most of them still have great careers. Their coming out didn't ruin anything.
(I don't think Kathy is gay. I may be wrong. But it's great that she speaks out.)
