Lesbians and the women who play them on TV at the 2009 Daytime Emmys

Ellen may have missed out on winning her fifth consecutive trophy for best talk show, but last night's 36th annual Daytime Emmy Awards were gayer than ever before.

The ladies of The View bested The Ellen DeGeneres Show for the talk show crown, but Ellen still took home four Emmys, including one for the promo of her interview with her wife, Portia. Ellen's loss was quite an upset as far as awards shows go; no one from The View was even on hand to accept the Emmy.

Ellen and Portia await Vanessa Williams' Big Gay opening number

The show was hosted by Vanessa Williams. In her opening musical number, a reworked "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You," Williams manages to call out lesbian super couple Otalia and embarrass Ellen. Williams also proves that one of her parents was Benjamin Button, because the woman is aging backwards.

Jessica Rabbit called. She said, "Keep the dress. It looks better on you."

The Otalia bit starts at 2:50, but the entire number is hilarious.

Jessica Leccia and Crystal Chappell, the actresses playing our favorite daytime lesbian couple Otalia, were on hand last night, which was bittersweet.

Jessica Leccia is all smiles even though ABC showed no interest in the resume she just presented to them on the red carpet. Unlike CBS, they're interested in telling their lesbian stories off-screen, thanks

Guiding Light will be off the air in a month and All My Children has already shipped their lesbians off to Paris. Where will we go to be titillated now?

Tamara Braun accepts the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work on NBC's "Days of Our Lives," wonders if Bianca is going to let her keep the statue on the nightstand

Other gay favorites, Tyra Banks and Sandra Oh, also attended last night's awards show.

Sandra Oh celebrates "Sesame Street"'s Lifetime Achievement Award with a much friendlier face than the ones she's grown accustomed to on the set of "Grey's Anatomy"

Oh presented Sesame Street with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The video is worth it just to see Oh's guest appearance as the Cookie Fairy on the long-lived children's television show.

Hello . . . But BOTH of Guiding Light's halves were present @ the 36 th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards!! Yes, BOTH Jessica Leccia & CRYSTAL CHAPPELL were present!! Not sure where you got your information from or if you watched the show--But they were BOTH up on stage when the cast of Guiding Light was introduced after the rediculously WAY TOO SHORT tribute to Guiding Light going off the air after 72 years of being around!! Hey I have to agree it was really nice for AfterEllen to cover this at all, if there was a mistake email them privately next time. They have a LOT of work and a lot of news to cover and yet they always take the time to do an Otalia recap or post venice info for us.

favorite part was when CC turned around during the GL tribute looking for JEssica too adorable :) I am glad they have created such a strong friendship bond. They are both great actresses.

i know i am prolly going to get a lot of flack for saying this, but i didnt really have a favorite of anything last night. yes, the opening segment was good, but instead of cutting to CC and JL (like they did for the other actors in the other skits) the cut to Ellen. Now, dont get me wrong i am a HUGE ellen fan, but they should have given credit where credit was due. second, this BIG tribute that they were supposed to have for GL was cut short. and the reason it was cut short, because the sesame street thing ran too long. but not only was that cut short, but so was B&B winning their emmy for best series. this may be where i will get the most flack- it is great and wonderful that sesame street was getting a lifetime achievement award, but come on- they have been on the air for 40 years; where as GL has been around for 72 years. Hmm, i think GL should have been shown a little more respect than they were. it was a big FU to the stars and to Irna Phillips.

This was my first time tuning into the Daytime Emmy's and i'm thinking it might be my last :\ I will agree with you about the opening segment; It was good and probably the best part of the show but why the HELL didn't they cut to CC and JL right after the Otalia skit? With all due respect Ellen *We know your amazing and you've done tons of things for our community* but really what the hell was the point of cutting to Ellen? ::sigh:: I was so upset by the whole thing and just dissapointed at the disrespect towards GL. I won't even go to the so-called GL tribute....What a smack in the face to the longest running show in tv history.

For me, the highlight of the night was getting a small glance of Jessica Leccia; Who, as always, looked stunning and gorgeous.

Although I would have preferred to have seen them cut to JL and CC as well, I thought the cut to Ellen was appropriate because Vanessa had just finished singing the line "I know that Ellen approves". Can Ellen and Portia be more cute? I think they are both unbelievably sexy indfferent ways. They are my lesbian dream couple. They make me so happy to see them mainstream. I am pissed Ellen didn't win though. Then the winning show doesn't even have someone there to accept. Also, The View has who is so anti-gay it makes me sick. I just won't even say her name.

Ellen has glasses, I've seen her wear them when she's reading e-mails on her show. and her right arm DID look huge, i don't know why one would look all full of muscle and the other not so much. i like her hair too, all spikey but soft. I'm just as pissed the view would win anything because of we all know who but atleast they have Whoopi Goldberg. she's cool.

That video made my night, Vanessa Williams is not only hilarious (those facial expressions in the videso!!) but a cool singer. I have no idea who any of these daytime people are, apart from Eleen and Otalia ect, but it still had me in stitches.

Can Vanessa host more shows, like Emmy's, Oscars ect? No more cheesy humour, more actually funny stuff!

That's the worst talkshow on television IMO. The hosts all speak at the same time, never letting their guests finish. I cringe everytime I watch it. I do sometimes if there's someone interesting on, but it's never worth it.

When did this happen? I'm confused. Or was this just a joke that my tired brain didn't understand. Can you please clarify?

I know when it comes to the girls (CC and JL), some online mags like Daytime Confidential check or quote Afterellen and I'd hate it if they reported this as actual news, LOL, like 'JL got rejected by ABC' or something...Can you just clue us in if this is news or a just a snarky comment?

I think the comment is meant to be taken tongue-in-cheek (re: AMC's Bianca and Reese who are living their soap adventure lives off-screen in Paris, IIRC). At least, that's how I read it.

And YES. Jessica is Hallelujah, Praise the Lord!GORGEOUS. The woman is off the charts stunningly beautiful. Guh.

Ellen's hair looks horrible... and she's looking super old lately.. I know she's 51 but come on... on the second picture she looks sort of ill or something.. A few years ago when she had her hair like on a flip/shaggy short... she looked so beautiful... gorgeous.. now she's looking mega old, and it hasn't been even that long ago...Her attire was very cute though. Portia looks tired and not in a post-coital sexy way.

Vanessa Williams looks very very sexy.. yes, she's aging backwards hahaha.. she looks better than before.

....were my favorite part, lol. I looved Ellen's suspenders & Portia looked amazing as always. Other than Ellen's show I don't watch daytime television so I really had no idea who most of the people were or what most of the shows were. I just watched hoping Ellen would win talk show or host :(

I did also love the Sesame Street tribute though lol. I loved Sesame Street so much when I was little and it was just kinda like when Sandra Oh was saying how it just brings you back to your childhood.

the opening number was awesome and i was so excited that the couple was also acknowledged during the GL tribute (as disgustingly short as the tribute was).

Also, Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia were both looking pretty damn good if i do say so myself (sigh......)
