The AfterEllen.com Fantasy Emmy Ballot

The nominations for the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this morning. This year the TV gods smiled upon Tina Fey the same way we do when we wake up and see her picture on our bedside table every morning; 30 Rock racked up a record 22 nominations. Here's the full list of nominees.

While we're happy for all of the women who are nominated, it's no secret that awards shows like the Emmys and Oscars are growing more bloated and more boring every year. We're excited Neil Patrick Harris is going to host the Emmys this time around, but we've had an additionally awesome idea about how to liven things up even more: How about some new Emmy categories?

Sure, Best Actress and Best Drama are OK, but we're not really sure we understand the voting criteria. How about a category that celebrates brilliant actresses whose shows got a though break? Or actresses who continued to put their hearts in it while their shows were sinking around them? Or, you know, how about just giving a trophy to a woman who looks good wielding a gun?

I love, seriously love, all of the "fantasy" and real female Emmy nominees. They are pure, concentrated awesome. But I think the academy may have contracted the dreaded sexually-transmitted crazy mouth because, um, "Family Guy?" Really? I watch, but, really?

I don't know, I think Mary McDonnell as Laura Roslin on Battlestar Galactica should be in the "Outstanding Titanic Captain" category. She was pretty fierce in the mutiny arc, threatening to fight all the way down to her "eye-teeth."

But honestly the Emmys are a joke. There have been extremely amazing shows (for example, Battlestar Galactica who was critically acclaimed EVERY SEASON) that are never nominated. The entire ceremony is a popularity contest. And it's ridiculous that the same people are nominated in the same category every year. Lisa Edelstein was cheated, she had THE MOST amazing season on House to date. I could say the same about many other actresses and actors out there.

BSG was an amazing show but completely ignored, they did the same thing to Buffy, great writing , great acting and massive fan base but not one mention at the emmys, I´m sure there are more but I cant remember them this minute.

Bearing this in mind it does seem strange that Family guy would get a nomination? I watch and enjoy family guy an its funny but Emmy worthy, not so sure and I base that on the shows they do usually nominate. Just seems weird.

Outstanding reality tv series? Seriously? This is an option and Outstanding Sci Fi/ fantasy TV show isnt, what a sad TV world we live in.

Happily, according to EW, Southland is set to return in September for 13 episodes. If we can judge by the show's official website, King will be there and maybe next year she'll be up for an award in a different category.

Oh wow, this voting thing is hard. Especially on these brilliant categories, with these even more brilliant nominees!

Okay, these are my votes:

Outstanding lead actress in jeans - Tie between Emily Deschanel and Lena Headey, I just can't choose. I'm in love with Emily Deschanel's character in Bones, so she's usually on the top of my list. But Lena Headey....oh Lena Headey...

Best supporting weapon - Eliza Dushku, of course, no competition.

Guest star who should take the place of an actual star - Michelle Trachtenberg, because her character in Gossip Girl is just such a lovely bitch.

Outstanding titanic captain - Jennifer Beals, because she takes control like no other.

TV doctor we'd trust to save our life - Sara Ramirez, she can break/mend my bones any time.

Best line of the season - Leighton Meester, just a great line, can't beat that one.

Weapon - Um why wasn't either Summer Glau who was surely a weapon herself or any of the BSG girls' shown some love here? Eliza although not my first choice.

Captain - Again no BSG love. Chandra Wilson would therefore be my choice.

Line - Brooke Smith

Overall better than the Emmys as I actually watch some of these shows.
