TV Alert: Betty is back in actionAfter a whole lot of hullabaloo, Ugly Betty is finally back on ABC tonight with a two-hour season premiere. And this year, more than ever, the odds are stacked against our affable, plucky heroine. She may be rocking a makeover and a promotion, but she's doing it in the Friday night death slot because last year's second-half ratings were dismal. Of course, if we've learned anything from Betty in three seasons it's that we should never, ever give up.
Last season's finale was one of the bleakest ever episodes of Betty, but the good thing that came of it was Betty's promotion to associate features editor. The new job should open up some fresh storylines for the Mode crew. How will Marc handle being passed over? How will Daniel cope with the loss of his only source of brainpower? Who will Amanda torture? And what kind of hijinks will the fabulous Wilhemina get up to? (That last one has nothing to do with Betty becoming an editor, but it's still my favorite Ugly Betty question.)
Much has been made of Betty's forthcoming makeover, but at a recent Esquire event America Ferrera told reporters: "It's not the big, dramatic change that people are making it out to be, [but she does] finally gets her braces off!"
This season will feature a special episode in The Bahamas with Shakira and Christie Brinkley, but mostly I'm just hoping for as much Amanda/Marc and Hilda/Justin as possible.
Our brothers over at AfterElton.com have some full-on spoilers for the two episodes that will air tonight, so if you're into titillation, head on over and check them out! Ugly Betty is one of the most racially-diverse, gay-friendly shows on network TV and I can't help but wish it well. Who is sticking with Betty for another season? YAY!
I'm so excited for Ugly Betty's return...
I'm hoping for more Marc/Amanda scenes this season because there's never enough of those and that we'll get to see Willi at her fiercest...
Oh, and if they can get Ana Ortiz away from The Karate Kid, that'd be great too.

I love its campy moments & Vanessa Williams' character is still ...fierce
Not a bad opener, maybe an hour too long but whatever -I support
Season premiere
I just caught the premiere and I thought it was excellent: just enough nostalgia/pilot throwback to go along with the whole Betty's-a-new-butterfly theme.
Like Pecola said, there can never be enough Marc/Amanda. And there was lots of goodness in the premiere.
And Wilhemina, of course, had the best lines of the episode:
“We will blow up that bridge when we get to it.”
“Well, I supposed I shouldn’t have tried to blackmail Claire. But in my defense, it’s hardly the worst thing I’ve done to the woman. Though she really is less of a woman, at this point, than something you use to scare crows or children.”
“Oh Marc! You think this is my first extortion-slash-secret-takeover? Please!”
“I said ‘OK’! Don’t make me take it back because the sound of your voice is annoying me!”
What did you guys think?
I thought it was good, but...
I liked "The Butterfly Effect" title (shades of Ashton Kutcher), and it was cool to see that Lynn Redgrave is still alive, even though she looks about 80 years old. Vanessa Williams always steals the show with her one-liners and fabulous wardrobe. However, having watched the show since Day One, I cannot recall any lesbian characters on the show, not even a five minute guest star. However, Marc gets to flaunt his gayness every show, and Justin might as well come out, he is so flaming obvious. Maybe there will be a lesbian character or reference on this show someday, but I am not holding my breath.
