TV Alert: "The Wanda Sykes Show" premieres this SaturdayOne of the high points on last year's LGBT Roller Coaster Ride of Terror was Wanda Sykes coming out as gay and married. It's not every day our community gets an intelligent, hilarious, high-profile woman of color as a spokesperson — especially one that isn't afraid pull punches.
This Saturday night (Nov. 7), Fox is launching The Wanda Sykes show, which should be the perfect platform for Sykes to push as many buttons as the FCC will allow. Wanda has been making the daytime talk show rounds over the last few weeks, stopping in to chat with Oprah, Joy Behar on HLN and the women of The View. In every interview, she's spoken openly and affectionately about her wife and their six-month-old twins. In fact, she and Oprah got philosophical over her sexual orientation, with Oprah saying:
At first Wanda looked into the audience and said, "You hear that, Mama? And you love Oprah!" Then she told Oprah, "I think that once you become your authentic self, you do open yourself up for everything that life has to offer you."
Things weren't quite as profound when Wanda dropped in on Jon Stewart at The Daily Show.
Wanda's hype for her new show:
She's right; the promos are a pretty funny. 'woman of colour'
-That phrase. I absolutely cannot stand it. As if only black women can be women of color. Dont know if its created to be uber PC, but its so annoying.just call them for who they are, black woemn. white women etc.
It seems every gay powerful woman out there is making their own tv talk show :D (yes Oprah that includes you)
The Wanda Sykes Show
I recorded it I can't wait to see it.
- Peace, love, vegan! -
I love Wanda Sykes
I've always really enjoyed her take in her comedy, although I'm not fond of use of foul language....but, that aside, she does zero in often what I am thinking on issues. It's just so much better, to me, that she is also a lesbian, out, and in a happy relationship. I would love to see pictures of her twins.
When I finally saw her show (11.28), I couldn't believe her take on the Tiger Woods situation because it was just what I thought, and probably a lot of other folks. If nothing else, there is some cover-up going on there.
It's a shame that the budget of the show is so obvious though, and it could affect the ratings and the overall life of the show and who the guests are. But they do incorporate some variety of format for the hour and it does remain interesting, and always funny. I didn't get the Portia character though....
I laughed myself silly through the hour though and was glad I happened upon it. (I so rarely turn the tv on but was feeling tired and wired and put it on for noise). She really cheered up my day!
Highly recommend people checking out her show.
women of color
isn't a phrase just for black women. it's used for all self-identified women of color and includes all women including black women.
some ppl like it, some ppl don't.
Wanda is AMAZINNNNNG.
The Adam and Mary J. Blige piece from "I'ma Be Me" was to DIE for. I, then came out shortly after because of it. Would tell you how my mother responded but I can say it was kinda like that. 'Cept she didn't wish for me to have cancer, haha.
