"Burn Notice" recruits Tyne Daly

Let’s play Lesbian Password. The clue is “Cagney.”

If your response was anything but “Lacey,” your lesbian cred is in serious jeopardy.

Let’s reminisce.

In the 25-plus years since Cagney and Lacey were our dream cops, Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless have both stayed busy.

Daly starred in Christy and Judging Amy and was nominated for a Tony for her role in Rabbit Hole.

Gless starred in The Trials of Rosie O’Neill and Queer as Folk, was nominated for an Emmy for her guest role on Nip/Tuck and currently plays Madeline in USA’s fantastic hit Burn Notice.

Daly and Gless remain good friends and have a lot of fun when they appear together. (If you haven’t seen the clip of them on The Graham Norton Show from a few years ago, watch it here. You won’t be sorry.) And we, of course, are delighted at any opportunity to see the two women who stirred up so many feelings that we couldn’t quite identify.

At the beginning of Season 2 of Burn Notice last year, Gless caused a ripple of glee in Sapphic circles when she dropped the hint that she wanted Daly on the show:

Tyne is very funny and I said, "She can play my sister." Tyne smokes Camels unfiltered, so … The two of us could be doing this scene where we’re coming into the house and Michael comes in and he hates smoking. Hates it. And it would be very funny, because you can’t see anything in the house because it’s the two of us in there [mimes smoking].

Tyne said, "I’d love it. I’ll do it, but I want to play her mute." Only Tyne Daly! And believe me, she’ll steal the show.

Nothing seemed to come of the comment &mdsah; until this week. Michael Ausiello reported this week that Burn Notice producers indeed are trying to get Daly to appear with Gless on an episode to air in early 2010.

No word whether she will play Madeline’s sister or not, but I’m keeping my trigger fingers crossed for the duo to go on a special mission with Gabrielle Anwar.

I feel some fanfic coming on.

Are you a Burn Notice fan? What role would you like to see Tyne Daly play?

    Burn, baby, burn

I've only seen one episode of BN - the one where Dina Meyer played Michael's ex-fiancee, Samantha. I was pleasantly surprised to see Sharon Gless on the show. I didn't know anything about the show previously.  It would be great to have a Sharon/Tyne reunion again.

    Tried to...

...watch an episode here and there. But I don't get. What is this show about really? I usually love every show I ever watch (I know, TV geek) but this one just confuses me...

    Well...

The main character was in covert operations - basically very deep cover CIA agent. He was framed for double crossing a number of people in his last deal and was therefore 'burned' meaning that his US government contacts were no longer willing or able to work with him, including freezing his bank accounts/IDs, everything. So, he got dropped in Miami where his mom lives and only two other people will dare work with him - a former agent (FBI, I think) and his ex-girlfriend who is a freelance agent, who is sometimes (read mostly) on the wrong side of the law, but really, really hot. Anyhoo - for quite a while he was trying to figure out who burned him and recently was able to do so and is now on his own, but also no longer under their protection - he wants to get back with the CIA, but still isn't able to. In any case, there's a lot of shooting, explosions, running, accents and overall hotness that goes on. Also, there's a good bit of yogurt eating. I would try and catch it online or via iTunes from the beginning.

    OMFG! I Love C&L

Sadly, there are youngsters on here that don't remember the golden age of television that was Cagney & Lacey. Christine Cagney was so amazing...there are no words to this day of how she made me feel! Check out some YouTube or tv.com clips and everybody get on board. Please, BN make this happen...

    Please producers, make it so.

Love Burn Notice, loved Cagney & Lacey, and would love to see this happen.  That's a lotta love.

Oh yes, about a role for Tyne...

While playing the sister would be fun and would allow for future appearances on the show, I think I'd rather see her play an old adversary of Madeline's.  Someone who used to be a friend before they had a huge falling out, perhaps over a man, perhaps Michael's father.  Now Madeline runs into her in Miami, and in between their verbal jabs at each other, it is revealed that Tyne's character is in a bit of trouble.  So then, guess what happens, Madeline has a heart and gets Michael to help her.  By the end of the episode, the two are friends again.. but still verbal sparring partners, because they're both fiesty ladies.  Then Tyne's character, problem now solved, leaves Miami with a rather touching farewell to Madeline.  The End.

    No Idea!

I had absolutely no idea that she was from C&L! I admit, I'm part of that horrible new generation of lesbians who haven't watched Cagney & Lacey, but I've read enough about it to be fond of it. I tried it one day, but I'm afraid that I simply struggle to get into any series from that decade, regardless of the attraction of the main characters.

But. on Burn Notice, Gless has been an amusing, entertaining, and just plain fun addition to the cast. I'm so glad to see that both Gless & Tyne have continued to do so well post-C&L. I hope that we can actually experience their chemistry on Burn Notice--I'd love to see the spark that so many C&L lovers talk about.

Christine Cagney Made Me Gay !

Well I will take any excuse to comment about Sharon Gless - LOVE her.

Oh God, I loved Cagney and Lacey - I didn't realise it at the time but I was writing fan fic about Christine Cagney when I was 14. Come to think of I've never really gotten over it - I'm still crushing on tough but vulnerable women to this day.

I've not heard of this show, I don't think its on in the UK but I will definitely look for clips on YT and even more so if Tyne Daly gets in on it too. (If they do it, they will definitely have to have a 'conference' in the Ladies' loos) They were a fanastic pairing and its great to see that they are such good friends still. And thanks for posting the link to the Graham Norton show - always worth watching again, so so hilarious.
