"FlashForward" predicts a lesbian kiss

One of the more intriguing premiers last week was new show FlashForward, which features lovely British actress Sonya Walger, whom you might have seen in Lost, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles or Sleeper Cell.

Walger plays Dr. Olivia Benford, who is in the middle of surgery when the pivotal series event, the “flash forward” occurs. Everyone in the world blacks out for two minutes and 17 seconds and sees the future as it will happen on April 29, 2010 at 10 p.m. Chaos ensues.

FlashForward raises interesting questions about how we would live if we knew the future and whether that future can be changed. I agree with scribegrrrl’s assessment that the key to the show’s success will be more emphasis on the apocalyptic and less on the sentimental.

Of particular interest to us, however, is a scene in the promo for Episode 2, which may be the kind of sentiment we love: girl-on-girl. Take a look at the trailer and pay particular attention at about 2:38.

In case you blinked, here are the two frames that tell the lesbian tale. And nothing is better than a lesbian tale. Ahem.

The lesbian in question appears to be FBI analyst Janis Hawk (Christine Woods). We discovered in Episode 1 that Hawk’s future includes a pregnancy, with no man in sight. And the Episode 2 promo includes this preview of Janis on a date with a woman (at least in my mind).

Yes, I know, another pregnant lesbian. But maybe this scenario will be different. Maybe.

If you missed Episode 1, you can catch it on Hulu.com or at flashforward.com.

Have you watched FlashForward? Did the show earn a place on your DVR? What do you think of the lesbian storyline?

    Yeaaaah!

I had no high expectations for the show, after the epic fail that Heroes became, I was suspicious of this kind of "worldwide phenomenon + tuns of characters" show, and watched the premiere with curiosity, having avoided spoilers and everything on the web.

I absolutely LOVED it, I thought it was a brilliant idea and can't wait to see how they will develop the storyline, so many possibilities, and such a great cast :D Adding some lesbionic element to the plot might be the cherry on the top :D And I also looooved the apocalyptic scenes, very awesome indeed!

One show I'll definitely follow this year!

    I Agree

    She's gonna get pregnant soon

As the flash was 6 months in the future, and future her looked close to 6 months pregnant....she better get pregnant soon. She also appears to think she's straight as of the premiere. I know lesbians move fast, but if she is having a baby with the woman she's kissing, she is going to have to decide she's gay/bi, fall in love with a woman, and decide to have a baby all in like...2 months max.

Although, it just occured to me that half the point of the show is how they alter their actions based on what they saw. So maybe she'll act to get pregnant because she knows she 'is' pregnant in the flash. Hmm. That could make it at least more understandable.

    Sonya Walger...

also starred in the HBO series "Tell me you love me" which was written and produced by cindy mort--the woman jodie foster is now reportedly with.  The series only lasted a year, but i thought it was pretty amazing.  I'd watch Sonya Walger in anything--Flash Forward included.  love it so far.

    Good connection!

I missed the Tell Me You Love Me connection (didn't watch the show), so thanks for pointing it out.

    Would Be Great

If this show doesn't flop. So many shows have begun with huge amounts of promises which amounted to nothing. I'm always wary of lesbian story-lines, not even The L Word did us that much justice. I long for the day when a program does us justice by not either making us go straight, get pregnant, question our sexuality after years of not questioning it or having us sleep with any woman who gives us a single glance. That's not asking tooooooo much is it?!

    Mixed feelings on the show

I watched this on Hulu while desperately procrastinating and wasn't hugely impressed. I don't like the lead actor--he makes me feel like I'm watching a Nicholas Cage movie--or his soapy plotline with his wife, and some of the dialogue is laugh-out-loud bad. On the other hand, John Cho has charisma to burn and it's very suspenseful. The hook at the end of the first episode was excellent. I agree that the investigation plot is much more interesting than the romantic drama.

And making Janis bi or lesbian (why assume she's a lesbian, when now she seems to think she's straight?) does appeal to me. I don't like the idea of a coming-out-then-pregnant storyline, though, especially since, as BAS says, it would have to happen awfully fast. (And in the flash-forward she seemed really unhappy, maybe about the pregnancy. Please no more cheating-on-a-woman-with-a-man.)

Also, I'm worried about how much time Janis will get at all. In the first episode I think she got even less screen time than the babysitter.

Has anyone read the book? Was Janis involved with a woman there?

    Good point

My bad for assuming lesbian instead of bisexual. I just get so excited for the least promise of Genuine Girl/Girl that I forget to be logical. Thanks for calling me on it!

    OMG It's Penny!

...and Charlie - those two together in one series, it's priceless, I mean "Not Penny's Boat!".

    ;)

    I'm actually  considering watching this...

    Flash Forward>>

I LOVED the show! I truly hope the TV execs give this a chance to flourish (unlike what they did and should have done for NBC's Journeyman).

Although I did not see Sonya Walger in any of the shows you mentioned, I DID first see her on The Mind of the Married Man on HBO. I thought she was great.

And there's a typo in the last sentence of the paragraph right under Sonya's picture: the date should read 'April 29, 2010' not 'April 29, 2101.'

I'm pretty sure NONE of the characters will be alive on that date, lol!

    Thanks!

Obviously, I'm behind on reading comments, but thanks for the correction.

    definitely worth watching

I loved the show too! That was even before I knew there was going to be lesbian interaction. If you missed the first episode you can go to abc.com and watch it there!

    2101?

    Isn't the flashforward for 2010 not 2101?

    Thank you!

Watching this live I thought I caught a glimpse of two women kissing and assumed it was Janis, but hadn't dvr'd it and couldn't rewind so I wasn't sure. Good to know I didn't dream it. :)

And why are we assuming she thinks she's straight? Maybe she's not out at work? She could be saying "I don't even have a boyfriend." While then thinking 'Not likely to have one either!'

I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt that this isn't some random character development until proven otherwise. We'll see how it goes with the episode this week. I may be back next week with a different story. :)

    Question

Her "flash" was of her getting a sonogram, correct?  Now, she didn't seem worried when recalling it, and she looked like she was at her regular doctor and not say, the emergency room.  Do many people get sonograms at 10 pm?  Just wondering if that's what happened.  Loved the show and will definitely keep on watching though.

    Liplock Canard

Yep--glad someone else noticed that particular flashforward.

I was surprised how much I actually liked the show--but my expectations were low to begin with.

However, if it gets stinko  I hope the producers don't think the promised liplock, which is probably a lesbianish canard, is going to keep me tuned in--little tired of that play.

    Curious

I'm curious to what will happen once the season ends... if this series will get renewed. Will their flash forwards really happen? We're into 2 eps now and there is an indication that it's getting there. Plus the fact that there will be a lez character in the form of Janis (fingers crossed)... hey, that means there's still hope we can add her to our lesbian characters on tv this season. LOL! ;o)

Am I the only one watching...

    lol

So I was watching the third episode last night and Janis totally got outed by the evil old nazi!  She was wearing a ring on her left thumb and he brought up how it was a symbol in some european countries that you are a homosexual.  I was cracking up because it looked like she wanted to strangle him. Unfortunately, it was not brought up again in this episode.

    so gay!!

So I've been watching it from the beginning (LOVE IT) and my gaydar pinged with her. 1 reason she might not be pregnant is because shes thinking, err hello I'm gay so it aint gonna be an accident it has to be planned, and she pointed it she didnt know if she wanted kids, well if you're straight you dont need to want them, accidents happen!

also the german nazi man pointed it out, nice little heads up for us lady lovers if you ask me. Another thing, I cant remember exactly (and sod sitting through the whole thing just to check) but I dont remember her saying shes got no boyfriend, i remember her saying shes not seeing anyone sowhy do we automatically go to straight just because shes not said shes gay yet.... some people above have said she'd have to come out then get pregnant, why cant she already be out and we just not know it yet?

I didnt even know about the kiss, thats exciting though, heres to hoping shes a good one!!

Lets get one thing straight.... I'm not.

    Storyline starts next episode!!

On this weeks episode Mark tells his babysitter Nicole (i'm about 99% sure she's the other woman in the picture) that he will send a collegue to investigate her flash forward. And i think i allready know who the colleague of Mark may be...
    giovannia's picture

    well that didnt last long,

well that didnt last long, the FBI agent told the other lady she didnt want to see her and got shot in one episode. Dont know if she survives the shooting, despite her flash forward vision. With ABC's record I will be surprised if she lives.
