Sharon Gless to “Nip/Tuck” — will somebody tell me why?

What is it about Nip/Tuck that attracts fabulous women? I’m serious. The list of past guest stars includes Famke Janssen, Vanessa Redgrave, Alanis Morissette, Jill Clayburgh, Rosie O’Donnell, Kathleen Turner, Brooke Shields and Jacqueline Bisset. Plus, Lauren Hutton, Madonna, Paula Marshall, Portia de Rossi, Jennifer Coolidge, Tia Carrere and Daphne Zuniga are scheduled for season 5. Now yet another lesbian crush has signed on — the icon formerly known as Christine Cagney, Sharon Gless.

Gless will appear in a four-episode arc as Colleen Rose, a talent agent who wants to represent Sean. (I guess even plastic surgeons need agents in Hollywood.) I’m glad Gless is building on her recent success in Burn Notice, the spy drama from USA that was one of summer TV’s nicest surprises. But I just can’t get in to Nip/Tuck. I’m not sure why. I mean, Dexter is one of my all-time favorite shows, and it’s nothing if not graphic. But Nip/Tuck makes me weak in the knees. And not in a good way.

The other project Gless recently announced sounds a lot more interesting to me — the stage adaptation of A Round-heeled Woman: My Late-Life Adventures in Sex and Romance. The source material is Jane Juska’s account of her experience as a semi-retired Berkeley teacher who took out a personal ad in the New York Review of Books to attract someone of her intellect.

The ad said, “Before I turn 67 — next March — I would like to have a lot of sex with a man I like. If you want to talk first, Trollope works for me.” Trollope, by the way, is a Victorian novelist and no relation to the woman you met at the bar last night.

Gless optioned the book and tried to sell it as a series in America, without success. Now, a British producer is helming the project. Gless plans to play Juska, a part that will doubtless include nudity. Prior to that, no real-life nips and tucks are on her schedule.

Do you watch Nip/Tuck? What do you love/hate about it? Will this season’s lesbian story line and guest stars like Gless make you tune in? Tell me what I’m missing. Meanwhile, here’s a glimpse of what made us fall for Gless in the first place.

    Addicted

Oh, I am so addicted to Nip/Tuck, and have been since the fist season, and all of these fabulous guest stars are just icing on the cake. I realize the whole show is filled with sensationalism, but I can't stop, lets call it a guilty pleasure.

    Gless is more

I would suspect Sharon's signing on with Nip/Tuck may have something to do with her long and close relationship with Rosie, and Rosie's cozy relationship with the powers that be at Nip/Tuck.

I am with you however, and cannot make myself watch, let alone like, Nip/Tuck, even if the Great and Powerful Gless appears.

    I don't get it either...

Nip/Tuck, that is. For some reason watching that show makes me feel slightly uncomfortable.

Cagney & Lacey, on the other hand, I do get. They almost made me want to become a cop. Almost. Until I got older and realized I cared way too little about whether or not people followed all the rules...

    Love it!

I'm not sure what it is about the show but it is one of my favorites on TV. I like the stories, the characters, the drama and the outrageousness of it all. Not everyone likes everything. Me, I don't like The Office, gave up on Friends after 4 years, couldn't watch Seinfeld after year 5 and I stay far away from Grey's and Dancing. As far as I'm concerned, Nip/Tuck cannot get here fast enough!

    NIP/TUCK

I always want to NOT watch Nip/Tuck, because it makes me feel slightly uneasy.  I don't so much mind the blood/guts part of the show, it's just something underlying that I can't quite put into words that makes this the show I love to hate (if that makes any sense).

After last season I thought, that's it, I'm not watching this show anymore, but then what do they do?  They go and bring Portia De Rossi on to play a lesbian (DAMN THEM)... it's like that quote from The Godfather "Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in."

    Nip/Tuck scares the bejesus

Nip/Tuck scares the bejesus out of me. I watched one episode--where the woman was having a face-lift and was awake during the whole thing, thereby feeling everything--and nearly vomited.

However, that flasher during the Cagney and Lacey opening just made me giggle.

    I love Nip/Tuck. It's gritty and fabulous.

    Mean, nasty...

and totally misogynistic. That's why I hate nip/tuck. No female character has ever made it out of there without being brutalized and/or humiliated in some way, shape or form. And THAT's why y'all feel icky when you watch it. LOL

Oh yeah, that makes a lot of sense...

thanks for clearing that up ;-)

Although, I think there's also something less obvious about this show that makes some of us uneasy...

Oeh that list is just awesome. Can't wait. How exciting is it that Sharon Gless is appearing!! I adore her. She was so cute in QaF too!

"What is it about Nip/Tuck that attracts fabulous women?"

    my biggest teenage crush....

.......was definitely Sharon Gless, back in the day - be still my beating heart!  i've just bought the recently-released first season of C&L and watched it with my best pal in London (who was similarly afflicted), and i have to say that it's still without parallel as far as a decently-written show goes for two lead female characters.  oh yeah, and Cagney was hot hot hot, which helps!

that picture of her, by the way - is that a syrup (of fig = wig) on her heid?  and has she already been subject to a wee bit of nippery/tuckery herself, or is it just vaseline smeared all over the camera lens?  whadda ya think?

it has a misogynistic streak, for sure

Yeah, I can't get into this series either. I've only watched a few episodes. I think they want to play up a queer sensibility (with the sometime homoeroticism) and troubled masculinity while also reinforcing the way, under patriarchy, that some men treat women (with contempt). Trying to have it both ways. I just get turned off.

    From Sharon Gless

"Dear Fairly Butch - I enjoyed your posting. It made me smile - You COULD have signed it "Fairly Bitchy" - and I use that term with affection. :) - Don't you hate people who end sentences with happy faces? Yes, I was wearing a wig -- but no longer. It was a bad idea. And that photo has been airbrushed to the embryonic state. I don't know a surgeon who is that good. :) (Damn, there's that happy face again.) And Vaseline? I didn't know it was used for THAT, TOO!! Thanks for the laugh. Sharon Gless

Sharon darling, the pleasure was all mine!  and glad to hear i could raise a smile all those miles away - with or without Vaseline.......!
