Lily Tomlin could get her own showThis week’s edition of RWHAT (Rumors We Hope Are True) is one that makes me want to cross my fingers and my toes and all the other body parts that are still flexible enough to move. Here’s a hint:
You guessed! Damn you’re good. According to iMDb News, Lily Tomlin and Kathryn Joosten are negotiating a spin-off for their Desperate Housewives characters. Joosten is a series regular as sardonic neighborhood busybody Karen McCluskey; Tomlin plays her sister Roberta.
So why am I excited about a DH spin-off? Well, besides the obvious Tomlin factor, the McCluskey sisters are a formidable and funny pair that delight in uncovering Wisteria Lane’s dirty little secrets. I’d love to see more of them.
ABC execs want Tomlin and Joosten to anchor a Golden Girls type show, written by DH scribe Marc Cherry (who is not on board yet). While I’m not thrilled about the prospect of a GG clone, my imagination gets downright giddy at the prospect of a seventy-something Hardy Girls dramedy. (It couldn’t be Nancy Drew because a) Nancy was an only child and b) she would never, ever share the lead with anyone.)
Of course, the Golden Girls image begs the question of who the sisters’ roomies might be. Our brother site AfterElton.com has a great suggestion — Amy Hill, a.k.a. Margaret Cho’s grandmother in All-American Girl.
My first thought (echoed by some AfterElton.com readers) was former Golden Girl Betty White.
White is phenomenal. At 87, she is sharp and witty and downright hilarious. I will watch her in anything. What do you think about a McCluskey sister series? Would you watch a sit-com featuring older women? Who should play Roberta and Karen’s partners in crime solving? Submitted by on May 14, 2009 - 3:00pm. |

Betty White!!
I love Betty White ever since she read Peterotica on Family guy, she has a great sense of humour. I was so shocked when I found out it wasn't an impressionist but Betty White reading Peter's dirty novel
She would be a great addition to the program!
gotta love betty hehehe
that ep of family guy was totally awesome, she was hilarious....shes also really great in Boston Legal (if you've ever seen her eps)...hahaha i hope shes in the show too. awesome-ness. hehehe.

Maybe Not the Golden Girls...
You can never replace The Golden Girls, nor should Hollywood try. But, a show with Lily Tomlin and Kathryn Joosten together has a lot of potential. These are two very funny women.
Cloris Leachman
It doesn't matter to me if the sitcom features older women as long as it is well written, I would watch. I think Cloris Leachman would be a great addition as well!

Uh no...
Another Golden Girls? They'll never be ANOTHER Golden Girls, hell GG spinoff, Golden Palace, tried but even that failed. The magic is gone, my girls Bea and Estelle are gone. No Bea and Estelle, no Golden Girls.
BTW: Cloris Leachman, ever since she stunk up The Facts of Life after Charlotte Rae Left, I can't bear to watch her in anything else.
In 50 years people will ask "Lindsey who" but Natalie Wood will be indelible.
Agreed
But I doubt it will be another Golden Girls because of the cast line up. If they do try to remake Golden Girls will be a disappointment.
And I did not know that Cloris Leachman replaced Charlotte Rae in the Facts of Life?!
90 people get the swine flu, everyone wears masks; Millions of people get AIDs, no one wears rubbers.
It would be better
for Lily to a show that doesn't seem to "Golden Girls" ish, because critics and sometimes fans don't take shows that seem like a modern day so and so, too kindly. Like that one show on Fox(forgot the name of it, but it was an early '00 show, I have to google it) that was a rip off from "The Wonder Years", then there was that Robert Townsend show called "The Parent 'Hood" that was an oblivious rip-off of "The Cosby Show"
Leachman replaced Rae late '86 when Rae decided that it was for Mrs. Garrett to leave the girls, bad idea because from then on, the series tanked.

The Hardy Girls.
Sounds like the show has a lot of potential to me. I would love to see this as a crime-solving series of seniors gals...as suggested...and I love everyone from Lily to Kathryn (West Wing's Mrs Landingham, I cried when she died)...to Amy who is a riot...to Betty White who is a comedy goddess at this point (I think she will make Sandra Bullock's soon-to-be-released movie worth the price of the ticket).
If they do this right...they will have me as a viewer!
