Sharon Gless as Hannah Free: At last, she’s a lesbian

This summer, some friends on a Rosie cruise sent me a text early on the first day.

“Guess who we just met in the bathroom?”

Rosie? Kelli? Julie Goldman? That chick from Annie?”

Sharon Gless.”

“Wait. She’s not gay.”

“I don’t think she cares.”

And that, friends, is exactly why we love Sharon Gless.

Gless is a lesbian icon. From Cagney & Lacey days, when all of us had slash-fiction fantasies whether we wrote them down or not, through playing Michael’s mom Deb on Queer as Folk, to her latest turn as the annoying-but-lovable Madeline on Burn Notice, whenever Sharon Gless is on a show, lesbians are watching.

Instead of getting all nervous about it and taking out full-page ads asserting her heterosexuality, though, Gless slicks back her hair, puts on a tux and shows up at the GLAAD awards.

Or hangs with hot TV lesbians.

Or she goes on R-Family Vacation cruises and patiently poses for pictures with lesbians in the restroom.

Now, finally, Gless will play a lesbian in the new independent feature Hannah Free.

The film tells the story of Hannah and Rachel, who grew up — and fell in love — in a small Midwest town in which same-sex relationships were unacceptable. While Hannah (Gless) becomes an outspoken, unapologetic lesbian, Rachel (Maureen Gallagher) marries a man and becomes a homemaker. The story flashes between past and present to recount how the women maintained their lifelong love affair, culminating in Hannah’s fight to see her partner one last time in a nursing home.

The movie is based on Claudia Allen’s popular play of the same name. Hannah Free begins shooting in Chicago in November and should be ready for release in 2009.

I’m ready to buy a ticket now. Are you as excited as I am?

    Sharon Gless

I just very recently got myself the dvd set of the first season of Cagney & Lacey. (Well, it's the first season that SG is in. So, technically, it's the 2nd season.) I thought it was for purely nostalgic reasons, as I had watched it on German tv reruns in the nineties and loved it. Christine Cagney is one of my favorite tv characters of all time. But when I watched it again these past two weeks, I couldn't believe how good the show actually was. Sure, the production value wasn't very high in those days (compared with today's gloss). And it was the eighties, so who can we blame for the clothes and hairstyles? But the issues they touched on and discussed, such as domestic violence against women, date rape, even homosexuality, were hot topics, that noone else wanted to touch. Looking back, I think that maybe, if they were on today, Christine could be a gay woman. Back then the first actress who played Det. Cagney wasn't feminine enough for the networks (or advertisers'?) taste. Still, how lucky for us then, because that assessment brought us one of the most iconic tv characters ever. And Sharon Gless was wonderful in it: the perfect mixture of vulnerability and toughness. And cute, too. (I wonder whether Orion and MGM will ever issue dvd sets for the other seasons.)

I loved her in QAF, too. I don't know if Hannah Free will ever make it over here. But if it does, it'll take quite some time. I'll definitely keep a lookout for it.

Wrong place wrong time...but hey it was Sharon Gless

Hi there. I'm posting because I'm the "Lesbian in the Bathroom" w/Ms Gless. Posting gives me an opportunity to say THANK YOU to her for her patience (and I'm so sorry for our stupidity). We were totally embarrassed that we ambushed her coming out of the toilet but she is so awesome we couldn't resist. Then we have a camera mal-function and it took way longer to get a pic. I totally said stupid stuff about Cagney and Lacy showing my ignorance. She graciously opened the door to the bathroom (while we were having trouble w/the camera) and yelled to her friends waiting outside "Hey I'll be there in a minute, were taking pictures". She was a sweetheart and I want to apologize publicly for being a twit and making her pose thru the debacle. Whew...there... got THAT off my chest.

    Yes! Honest? Yes!

I have been in serious love with Sharon since her Cagney & Lacey days.  Oh, how I used to imagine that Cagney was a lesbian.  The experience pookiehart had in the restroom with Ms. Gless shows how much of a good sport and real lady she is.  I can't wait for this movie.

    She's awesome. pure and simple.

Sharon Gless stole my little teenage heart when she played Cagney back in the day and look at her, She's still a gorgeous, gorgeous woman.  And her attitude just makes her more kick ass. You rock Sharon!

    You gotta love her...

I have had the privilege of meeting Sharon Gless twice, once in Los Angeles at the Director's Guild on Sunset, and once at a fundraiser for NOW in Washington, D.C.  Both times, she was very gracious, giving, generous, and sincere.  She is a true lady and a wonderful actress.  She has always been a true supporter and friend to the gay and lesbian community.

    You totally rock, Sharon!!!

    Cagney and Lacey DVDs

I love Sharon Gless - and Tyne Daly.

A friend started a petition to get the rest of the Cagney and Lacey episodes on to DVD - Fox is acting like they don't believe we're really out there!

Don't know if you're allowed to post links, but in case:
