"Sweeney Todd" behind the scenes: Scissorhands returns

The promotion machine for Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street is in high gear as the movie's December 21 release approaches and, I must say, Helena Bonham Carter is a smashing Mrs. Lovett.

Her childhood friends are not surprised, according to Bonham Carter's interview in the December issue of Marie Claire. "One of my friends said, 'Of course you'll get the part. We called you Mrs. Lovett when you were 13 — you walked around with her horned hairdo for a year.'" Of course she did.

About the same time, her future boyfriend Tim Burton visited London, where he saw the musical — multiple times — and was equally obsessed. Not until about five years ago, however, did Burton focus on turning Sweeney into a film. And according to the movie's leads, this may be his best film yet.

The audience at a screening last month agreed, as did a Cinefantastique critic who attended the show. "This movie is pretty much your dream of what it would be when you first heard that Burton and Johnny Depp would be turning the Stephen Sondheim musical into a movie — it's a dark, brooding horror-musical-comedy that hits all the right notes."

Concerns about whether Depp can sing apparently were put to rest when a clip of Depp and Bonham Carter singing "My Friends," the love song to Todd's razor, was shown at the Venice Film Festival's lifetime achievement award ceremony for Tim Burton. At first, however, Depp himself shared those concerns.

While Burton's gory version of Sweeney Todd won't be for everyone, the more I hear about the movie, the more I'm looking forward to seeing it. In a season of often-fake cheer, this might just be the perfect holiday movie. But a word of warning to Santa: better pass on any snacks left out on Helena Bonham Carter's table.

    I'm really excited for this

I'm really excited for this (sondheim + burton = awesome) but I have to say, I wasn't too impressed with johnny depp's voice in that clip.  I just have to prepare myself for the fact that he's not really a singer, so whlie he can do it, he's probably not going to do it as well as I'd like.  I'm sure it will be made up for with his dark, twisted humor.

I'm chiming in with you, Hannah

I'm really not impressed with Johnny Depp's voice at all. But, he imbues every line he has been given with a lot of character. I'm a little more impressed with Helena Bonham Carter's voice.

Gods, with this cast, I'll be running straight to theaters when this movie comes out.

    Johnny, Helena and Alan!

Does it get any better than that?! I'm so excited. I don't really know the story, but just because of these three I'll go and watch it. Johnny is actually one of very few actors (in the contrary with actresses) I absolutely adore! He's just soo cool, and hansome, haha! The trailer looks awesome! *excited* And how come Johnny is so good at all the accents?

    Sweeney Todd

Yeah. I think JD is obviously not the best singer so  he has probably made a descision to carry the character through the vocal as opposed to getting it technically correct. I think considering the film is a little bit twisted; with dark humour, it will probably work better this way than having an actor with a better voice, like say Ewan McGregor (in Moulin Rouge). Johnny's gruff, rough around the edges vocal will probably suit the atmosphere of the film more, i think.

    Why does Tim Burnton always

Why does Tim Burnton always use the same actors in all his movies? I like Johnny Depp, I love Helena Bohnam Carter, and I definitely want to see this movie. But seriously, Burton might try and mix it up sometimes (maybe find someone who can act and sing?).

look at all the tim burton movies w. Depp:

edward scissorhands, sleepy hollow, charlie and the chocolate factory, ed wood, the corspe bride, and now sweeny todd

    You Left Out..

Danny Elfman.  It's not a Tim Burton film unless Danny does the music.

    definitely.

Good call. Danny Elfman is Tim Burton's soundtrack of life.

    finally

finally a version that might do the play justice....cas we all know how great Hollywood is when it comes to play to screen adaptations.

    Definitely On My List

One of my favorite musicals of all time. It's certainly the most operatic musical ever.

I'm a little trepidatious because neither Bonham-Carter nor Depp are great singers. Fortunately, they are great actors and that will probably make the difference.  The look of the film is perfect.

If I'm not at the theater Christmas day, I will certainly be there the day after.  Cant' wait to see how they do "A Little Priest".

    Peace, Joy and Love

    brilliant.

Tim Burton might not be everyone's cup of tea, but you can't deny - he has his own style, and vision that can go for miles. I don't care how bad Sleepy Hollow or the last Charlie/Choc. Factory was ... I will STILL go to see Sweeney Todd.

What is it about Victorian London, and the fascination with murder-by-blades?

And to th1thonly: Many directors like using the same actors ... a trust and respect  develops, as well as a meshing of styles. I would imagine this to be especially important to Tim Burton - because his vision is so detailed, and his subject matter so dark and frankly, weird - theatrical, in many ways. he isn't directing vehicles that every actor in Hollywood is dying to be a part of (pun unintentional). He needs actors who are willing to go to these dark and weird places with him. Otherwise the film won't work. And let's face it - Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp are about as weird as they come these days.

And thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges....

    I'll watch anything with

I'll watch anything with Helena Bohnam Carter in it. I was so jealous in college because my roommate got to work on the film, Where Angles Fear to Tread.  However, I did get to study with Arnost Lustig. You guys should check out his films and books.

    I cannot wait for this

I cannot wait for this film!!  I love Burton, I love Johnny and I love Helena, and the three of them together is dynamite!!  Unfortunately I have to wait until January 25th for it to be released in the UK, but I'll be there, back row centre with my munchies!!  :D

    Johnny Depp

Is it just me, or is Johnny Depp the number one lesbian pin-up? But jeez.  The movie is excellent, but even better for all the eye candy.  Helena B Carter is amazing at those types of roles.  Just look at Bellatrix in Harry Potter OOTP.
