“The Tracey Fragments” – Ellen Page before she was JunoNot surprisingly, Ellen Page's power as a box office draw has skyrocketed since we all fell in love with her as Juno. (Don't tell me if you didn't love Juno because I won't believe you anyway.)
The Tracey Fragments, which captured attention at 2007's Atlantic and Berlin film festivals and garnered Page the Best Actress in a Canadian Film award from the Vancouver Film Critics Circle, finally will have its U.S. release on May 9.
Page plays Tracey Berkowitz, a 15-year-old who's riding out a blizzard in the back of a city bus, wearing nothing but a shower curtain. She's looking for her brother Sonny, whom she hypnotized into believing he's a dog. The movie uses complex Mondrian-style multi-frame editing throughout the entire movie to convey Tracey's fragmented thoughts as she tells her story. To some reviewers, the technique makes the film somewhat disjointed. But it also reflects Tracey's confusion. As Liz Braun put it in her review, “The Tracey Fragments is a film that gets right inside the mind of an adolescent girl. Why you'd want to go there in the first place remains a mystery.”
But even critics that weren't thrilled with the technique agree that Page turns in another stellar performance. According to Cinematical, “You name it, she conquers: from the cursing, to the partial nudity, to the attempted rape, Page pumps every inch of her soul into the role. And boy, does she get it right.”
It's a good thing she does, since she's in almost every frame of the movie. The film's comic relief comes in the form of Tracey's government-subsidized therapist (Julian Richings), who conducts his sessions in drag. I love how this shot captures the pain and absurdity of the situation.
An interesting side note: during the promotion for the film's release in Canada, the distributor uploaded all of the original footage from The Tracey Fragments to torrent files and encouraged people to re-edit the footage. The entries ranged from music videos to trailers to a complete re-edit of the film in a linear format, without split screens. You can see the results here. The Tracey Fragments will screen at several film festivals leading up to its wide release. When it comes to Dallas, I intend to be there. The chance to see multiple Ellen Pages onscreen at the same time is just too good to pass up. How about you? Do movies like this give you a headache? Or are you always ready for one more Page? This movie is fantastic!
Just because I love Ellen Page
Oh Ms. Page
I saw this film last year at the Toronto film festival and was blown away. The style that it was shot in was distracting at first but you get used to it after a while and barely notice it then. The story was alot more intense then I would have ever thought and if you get a chance to see it check it out!
p.s Ellen's film An American Crime is going to be premiering on Showtime on May 10th I think. Catherine Keener is also in the film.
Can't wait.
I've been following this movie for quite some time and I'm so glad that it's going to get released. I participated in the re-edit you were talking about and the footage of the movie looks just fabulous and I'm sure it will be crazy awesome when it all comes together.
On top of the whole movie looking awesome, who doesn't love anything with Ellen Page in it?

The Tracey Fragments is a fantastic film, it took a while to watch with the style of editing but the dialogue is fantastic
"I dont cry over spilt milk, i mean i cant even drink it... im lactose intolerant."
Gem!
Ellen Page is wonderful.
I haven't seen Juno, but i can only imagine how well Miss Page acted in it. I fell in love with her role in Hard Candy. It was very dark, but she played it well. I'll totally see this movie. The split screen cinematic aspect sounds very interesting as well.
O and by the way... Ellen Page is so hot. :)

Ape.
Ellen!!!
While I havent seen the actual movie, some of the re-edit projects are up on youtube, as well as a few of the clips they uploaded for the project. Very interesting to see unedited film.
Ellen Page is fantastic in this (and in everything else she's in). I will definately be buying this when its released on DVD.
I created a music video for the movie
I saw the rough version of the film via torrent. It is rather depressing but Ellen Page is AMAZING!!!

veoh
Baby Cate?
This is an amazing actor - IMHO the only one who currently compares is Cate Blanchett. And lets not forget that Ellen was only 18 or 19 when she filmed "fragments".
My only worry is that Hollywood will have no idea what to do with such a talent. Lets face it, lately the only leading roles for women have been of the light, frothy, sexist variety. Which leads me to believe that Ms. Page will run out a one or two year string of "cute, smartass, yet loveable" characters and then will have no choice but to come home to make amazing films for David Cronenberg, Sara Polley and Atom Egoyan. Hmmm. Maybe not such a bad thing after all...
I'm in love with Tracy, Ellen, and even Hayley.
I'm NetFlixing it right now.
I won't tell you that I didn't like Juno; however, I loved Hard Candy; so twisted.
Each time I see an EP flick, I have a stronger and stronger desire to wrap my legs around her in friendship, xD.
I also find it interesting that Broken Social Scene scored this flick, as they're one of my favourite bands. After all, Feist used to be with them back in the day.
Nice post!
...and all was well, and the world smiled.
Broken Social Scene
I've seen and loved Juno,
I've seen and loved Juno, Hard Candy, and Mouth to Mouth... I even have "I downloaded a ghost" in my must-watch-list... even though it doesn't look like the best movie ever. Suffice to say, I love Ellen Page as I've stated in another comment before. But the Tracey fragments? I watched ten minutes of it... I didn't love it.
I haven't deleted it though, I'm willing to give it another chance when I have the time and the patience :P
Interesting
As a huuuuuge Ellen Page fan I saw this at the Canadian screenings and it was interesting. Definitely worth watching to see the technique used, and some screen captures (like the therapist one seen above) are BEAUTIFUL. However, as a whole, I felt it was a bit disjointed and a little slow. EP gives a wonderful performance though, and the music is done by Toronto superpower band Broken Social Scene. :)
The movie isn't for everyone but GO SEE IT!
young janine garofalo...
ellen page reminds me of a young janine garofalo. i like her in juno, i've not seen the tracey fragments yet, has it been released in the UK?
