TV Alert: "Glee" premieres tonightI can’t think of a better name for a Jane Lynch series than Glee.
If, somehow, you have missed news of this hour-long comedy, in which Lynch plays a demanding cheerleading coach (squee!), stop right now and go read Stunt Double’s post about it. Then set your DVR for 9 p.m. tonight to see the Glee premiere, right after American Idol.
Yep, a cheerleading coach means cheerleaders. Win-win. Lynch told the New York Times that her role of Sue Sylvester is a way for the writers to express a hidden characteristic of themselves: Ryan [Murphy] and Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk took their inner mean girl and created Sue Sylvester. And I get to say the most heinous things. This episode that we’re doing now, it’s like episode 8, I actually have a moment that will hopefully tug at the heart strings. And Ryan said, "You just bought yourself six more episodes of heinous behavior."
For Jane Lynch, of course, heinous = hilarious. She also shows us some of that swagger that we loved so much in Joyce Wischnia. Sue is like the culmination of all the power-abusive people I’ve played. She could be viewed as almost pure evil. Hopefully you’re laughing at her, too. She really wraps herself around how mean she can be. She’ll walk by a kid with books, and knock them down, just to knock them down.
Any show with Jane Lynch is a winner in my book, but just in case you’re wondering if Glee is any good, here’s what the LA Times had to say: The only real problem with Glee, Fox’s new musical comedy, which premieres tonight, is that viewers will have to wait four whole months for the next episode.
Will you be watching? If so, come back after you see it and let us know what you think. Submitted by on May 19, 2009 - 4:00pm. |

Good, but
I really like the show and i'll probably keep watching, but why does the black person have to be so stereotypical?!?!
~Sarah
Thinking the Same Thing
The female black character they had was VERY stereotypical. They always have the black person use 'whitey' or 'white boy' or crap like that.

With the look in your eyes
Like you could save me
But you won't even try"

Agreed
That's the first thing I thought about when she started talking. I mean...come on!

You don't get it...
The entire concept of the show is that it is making fun of high school comedies...ALL of the characters are stereotyped in one way or another. Look how it makes fun of the flamboyantly gay kid, the black girl, the guy in the wheelchair, the jock...etc.
It's an incredibly subversive show...and brilliant for it. If the characters weren't partly stereotyped the comedy wouldn't work it would just come off as cheesy.

Re: You don't get it...
As a person of color I look at all the representations of people in t.v. I even noticed that after Obama became president black people were not only shown more in commercials they shown in a different light. I also notice that McDonalds commercials always end on the black person eating thier food.
So when I watched the show I did lookout for that.Ii really dont care if a character is a stereotype. What i care about is that that stereotype is the ONLY representation of a POC (one that has lines atleast). The jock is white, the gay guy is white, the guy in the wheelchair is white and the over-achiver is white.
Again, i do like the show, but these things stick out to me
~Sarah
Ok I think I see what you
Ok I think I see what you mean...here's hoping there is better overall representation of minorities when the show returns in the fall.
~Renée
>=0!
I was watching the show and near the end it just cut off and went straight to Seinfeld!!! WTF? I'm angry; I really enjoyed the show! Did this happen to anyone else?
On the bright side, the show was pretty awesome' I'll definitely be watching the real premiere this fall.
I'm glad I was able to catch
just finished watching

It was freaking awesome.

Shout out to Lea Michele!
I LOVED this show. I thought Jane was awesome but I also loved Lea Michele (from Spring Awakening fame)- her voice is amazing and I love the tightly wound character she plays. I though the show was great and I can't believe I have to wait so long for the next one. It's not even posted on Hulu yet..

Two words: Jayma Mays.
Yeah, I kinda have a ginormous crush on her, ever since her days on Heroes. That hair, those eyes, that adorable smile...
....Sorry, zoned out there for a minute! ;) But yeah, I thought Glee was pretty well-made, plus I love anything involving singing and dancing teens (see: High School Musical).

Stewie: Listen, why don't you save yourself years of sexual ambiguity and get fitted for a pair of Doc Martens and a plaid flannel shirt?
Lmao, I always loved that
Lmao, I always loved that Stewie quote...
i'm not
a massive fan of high school musical.. the story line for this wasn't so great but the music was fantastic. All the scatting and the cover of don't stop believing at the end!

"laugh, laugh on at all the dreams that i the dreamer dare to weave,
laugh on, that i still belive in the people, for I still belive in life"
Omg BEST show!!!
I tuned in not thinking I'd be that impressed and I was ENAMOURED...if you love musicals, quirky high school comedies that are totally dark underneath and some great acting and actors...watch this!
I PVR'd the first episode and I will definitely be watching it a few more times in anticipation of next season.
BTW - How hot are both the teenage girl who sings really well (with the gay dads haha)...and the red-headed teacher?? Omg both of them are smokin!

Glee
adidas tracksuit?
is it me or is jane lynch one of the few people to look awesome in the adidas tracksuit?
anyways, i hope this show doesn't fall under pressure, just like lost did. so many great reviews and the very high bar can prouce quite a counterproductive result. i hope it doesn't happen to 'glee.'
it was hilarious. good job.
For the Win
You know, I never thought that anything could outdue Jane Lynch throwing velcro balls at a felt uterus, then I saw Glee.
