“Twilight” comes alive on the big screenOn Wednesday, I was working with The Bonnie Hunt Show on in the background, when the audience went wild. I looked up and saw Peter Facinelli. Huh? He’s cute enough, I guess, but he’s not the kind of actor that attracts screaming fans. Silly me — I should have known. Facinelli plays Carlisle, patriarch of the Cullen family of vampires in Twilight.
Unless you’ve been cloistered, you know that Friday is The Day — the premiere of Twilight, the film based on the vampire romance that causes teenage girls (and, in some cases, their moms) to stop breathing. Literally. And part of the reason is that the fans are wondering if Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) will let vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattison) take her breath away permanently.
I was intrigued enough by the hype (even President-elect Obama is a fan) that I decided to read the first book, the one on which the movie is based. It turned out to be somewhat frustrating, because the writing made me crazy, but the story sucked me in (sorry). Now I’m reading the fourth and final book in the Twilight Saga. I know the ending, but I can’t seem to stop. I’m not sure if Stephanie Meyer’s writing improved or I just got used to it, but at least I’ve stopped groaning at the prose every few paragraphs. Suffice it to say, however, despite claims to the contrary, that Meyer is not in the same league as J.K. Rowling — and Bella is no Buffy. In fact, Twilight’s director, Catherine Hardwicke, claims that she’s never seen an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Look at this picture of Hardwicke and tell me if you believe that. (Ping!)
Beyond the fact that the two B’s both have vampire boyfriends, the characters have little in common. Buffy is a strong, smart, sarcastic woman who can fend for herself — a feminist role model. Bella is accident-prone, insecure, guilt-ridden and seriously considering giving up her life to be with a man.
So what about the movie? As long as you don’t expect a film classic, you’ll probably enjoy it. Take a look at the new Twilight feature trailer and then I’ll tell you what I thought. No spoilers, but if you want to see the film with no preconceived notions, read no further.
Twilight is one case in which cutting a very long book down to a two-hour movie is a good thing. I was happy to watch the story unfold without having to wade through long narrative descriptions and continual reminders of how beautiful Edward is. Besides, Kristen Stewart is the real beauty. More than once, she reminded me of Kate Winslet.
Stewart’s Bella is a lot less fragile and more confident than she is in the book and, frankly, I liked her more. In an intense romance like this, going over the top would be easy, but Stewart never lets Bella become sappy. Honestly, Stewart is remarkable in this film, although the nature of Twilight is such that her acting may not get the appreciation it deserves. You’ll hear a lot about Pattison, but I think Stewart is the star of this show.
Overall, the movie has more warmth and humor than the book. My guess is that die-hard Twilighters may not be happy with some of the changes. But the differences I noticed as a more casual observer seemed to be for the better, especially in the last few minutes. See for yourself, starting Friday. Are you a Twilighter? If not, have you read any of the books? When you see the movie, be sure to come back to tell us what you think. Submitted by on November 20, 2008 - 10:00am. |

Robert Pattison
Agreed
I completely agree.
Although he makes a pretty good Edward.
I looked into Twilight to
I looked into Twilight to see if it was appropriate for my little cousin to read. After reading maybe 3 pages I wanted to shoot myself. ARGH the writing is FRUSTRATING INDEED. I'm not sure I can ever read it.
I read a review saying that Bella is pretty useless and takes orders from the vampire boy. Ew.
I'll watch it
I'm not all that impressed, but the film does look like fun.
I'll wait for it to come out on DVD though.

The writing is horrid.
"It turned out to be somewhat frustrating, because the writing made me crazy, but the story sucked me in (sorry)"
I know! I agree! I've been spouting this for months. Meyers is a terrible writer- but the storyline is really good- especially if you manage to stick it out to the end. Because I like the plot (and hate the execution of it) I bought midnight tickets to the film for tonight. For once in my life I am looking forward to the movie more than the book.
It's funny- all these girls are freaking out and obsessing over Robert... I've been drooling over Kristen. It's been enjoyable. I can't wait till the fourth movie comes out- she will be amazingly gorgeous.
Even moreso than Bella- I adore Alice. I so wanted her to be gay. :-/ Damnit Meyers- why couldn't you have taken a page from your pal Libba Bray??
Isn't Meyers a Mormon?
Isn't Meyers a Mormon? I think we can safely say she'll avoid gay characters in her writing.
***spoiler below*** Don't read if you haven't read the books.
***************************************************
Didn't you think the third and fourth books were big pro-life/no premarital sex messages? Just a theory...
Yeah but..
I have to agree with you
I have to agree with you that Meyers definitely had a pro life/no premarital sex message. That annoyed me to no end as well as the no gay vamps. I mean vampires have been cast as hedonistic monsters for years. Typically, societal rules particularly those pertaining to sexuality don't line up for vampires. They can do whatever whenever. I wasn't a fan of the sparkling vampire either. Alice is one of my favorite characters who had more potential than was used.
I just don't want young girls idolizing Bella Swan. A Jane Austen heroine has more power than this girl which is kinda sad.
"but the story sucked me in (sorry)"
Me too and I had the same reaction you had to the books. Your review would be the only reason I'd see the movie in the theater.
I remember going to see Titanic. I had no advance warning and was stunned to be surrounded by shrieking 14 year old girls. I got it after the movie started.

Twilight Fever
I'm completely sucked in (pardon the pun) when it comes to all things Twilight. I'm almost done with the last book and already have my tickets for the film tomorrow.
The writing isn't frustrating. It's a young adult novel. It's meant for younger audiences. It just so happens the story had such a broad appeal that everyone and their grandmother became obsessed.
I like the choice of Kristen Stewart as Bella although I would have liked the young hottie from Jane Austen Book Club (Trey) to play Edward.
P.S. Robert Pattison will be on Ellen tomorrow
It isn't that.
Oh well...
beliveableinteresting. But then I decided to simply stick to Bella/Alice fanfiction. MUCH better choice, if you ask me.Twilight
I read on facebook somewhere that"JK Rowling proves that children's books can be over 500 pages and Stephanie Meyer proves why they shouldn't be"
With that said I did read all 4, because they sucked me in but I think the 3rd and 4th book should have been combined. I'm going to see the movie, now with a little more hope thanks to your post.

I'm intrigued by the movie
Twilight is kind of like a
Twilight is kind of like a lifetime movie, the writing sucks but you stick it through because you NEED to know what happens.
I Agree!!
I was just telling someone that it's poorly writen and the whole pissy little girl with the big strong man to save her really shitted me but I read them all anyway. the only reason I could come up with when asked why, is because it is a daytime soap in book form. Nothing happens and it's badly writen but you have to keep reading because for some unkown reason you are compelled to know how it ends.
I prob will see the movie aswell because being a film student I'm curious to see how they show the fastness of the Vampires. The trailor makes it look like a pretty cool effect.

interesting
I read somewhere that the books (which I've not read) are entertaining Mormon tracts, that Meyer's Brigham Young University education is very much evident in the themes of them. I also read that they're poorly written -- and I don't buy the argument that it is because they're young-adult titles. Their popularity, though, has me intrigued; I feel I have to read at least one just to see what's captivated so many people.
And I agree with stuntdouble (as I so often do) -- Pattison will always be Cedric Diggory.
okay i'll admit it, i am a
and im very excited about the film (kristen stewart yes please) - which doesnt come out in the UK til december 19th! fail :(
Låt Den Rätte Komma In
i used to anticipate this movie eagerly but then two weeks ago i watched "Låt Den Rätte Komma In"/ Let the right one in. a swedish film. also a vampire flick. so good. blew me away. goodbye twillight... i lost interst now =p ... but still i'll go and watch anything with kristen steward in it.
the movie
I saw the movie on Tuesday (I won free passes) and the movie is very good, I thought it was very well done as far as getting as much of the storyline into the movie as possible. Some stuff was cut... Tends to happen lol
The supporting cast was my favorite in this movie. Her friends and especially the father were my faves by far.
Alice is cute hehe <3 They cut out a bunch of the really funny parts from the book, though, in my opinion. *doesnt want to give anything away though!*
I am reading the third book
I agree!
My girlfriend gave me the Twilight books as she knows I am a big vampires fan (from Bram Stoker's Dracula, to Buffy, Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, etc.), but I agree, the writing on the Twilight series is horrid...and some times it is just downright atrocious (and boring). Going over the insipid prose, the many tedious pages of description regarding Edward's beauty, and Bella's own apparent lack of a spine and complete absorption with this vampire, was just downright annoying. I'm plowing through book 2 now (I didn't want to disappoint my girlfriend), and I still believe all the books would benefit from a ruthless editing. It was a little strange to see a vampire story with no references to sexuality, as the vampire-as-metaphor-of-liberated-sexuality is what makes this genre so intriguing. In fact, the Cullens and Edward seem to be conservative, snobbish, although admittedly noble vampires. :-) But now that you mention Meyers is a Mormon....that makes so much sense. As for it being written as such because it's for young adults, well, I disagree. I've read other young adult books (gay and straight young adult novels) and they are usually well-written, well-edited coming-of-age stories. Heck, even the Sweet Valley High series were short, sweet, straightforward teen novels that addressed everything from anorexia to teen marriage to sex!
I was excited though to see the film though, as it seems to have freed the book from all that. Maybe Meyers should have just written a screenplay instead of the ambitious 3 books (no, wait, that would be a bad idea).
As for Kristen Steward as Bella...how genius is that?!? She looks really good in this one and I hope to see her in an indie lesbian film. I think she has the potential to be one of the best of her generation. :-)
Not a fan of the books
Love KS!
I've been following Kristen Stewart since she was the cute little tomboy in Panic Room. I love her in this role, totally as beautiful and graceful as Kate. As for Twilight, my girlfriend is obsessed, though I am merely entertained. People who haven't read it often ask me..."I love Anne Rice, will I like Twilight?" Probably not.
And I made a vague comparison while reading Twilight...people(vampires) denying their "urges" to become good, contributing citizens just reminds me of ex-gays.
first thought
is that elizabeth reaser?
awesome!
Oh yes.
Dont quote me on this but I
Dont quote me on this but I THINK that it was Meyer that said she has not seen buffy instead of Hardwicke. Meyer has said that many many times but I've never heard it out of Hardwicke.
I'm obsessed. Got into the books a couple years ago and am so happy to see it coming to the screen. I will be one of the crazies at the midnight showing who have to sluggishly drag their butts to work in the morning with extra coffee. *yawn*
We're both right!
i got a t shirt made that
i got a t shirt made that expresses my contempt for twilight and the giant step back it takes in feminism.
on the front: gunshot wounds and in gothic lettering, Would Bella kill Edward to Save the World?
on the back: angel wings. in gothic lettering: Didn't Think So.
This book makes me want to puke.
I heard so much in the
I heard so much in the literary scene about Twilight, and being a Buffy and Anne Rice fan, I picked it up to scan in the library. I only had to read the first page to know it was a poorly, poorly, written melodramatic novel for teens.
People seem to rate the plot though, so I wonder whether the movie will draw more people to 'plough through' the book? I'm certainly interested in seeing the movie.
Oh, and I forgot to say, I
cant help but be excited...
Hardwicke did thirteen?? whoa, that just upped this movie's potential bigtime.
im not a huge fantasy fan, but i do love a good vampire story, and despite the melodrama of the series, im excited for the movie. i agree, though - kristen stewart is far more interesting than pattinson. honestly, shouldnt he be hotter? maybe it's just me but his eyebrows are a little toooo heavy. in fact, he kind of reminds me of angel first season of buffy... or third when he went bad. whatever the case, i just hope he doesnt overact in the movie as badly as he does in the trailer.
interesting points about the pro-life / no premarital stuff; i actually havent made it past the first book, but now that i know theyre never going to do it, im honestly a little hesitant to read any further. after all, what's the point if theyre never going to consummate this crazy passionate, i'd-die-for-you love??
oh, and did someone mention Sweet Valley High??? now THAT was an amazing series. esp when Francine Pascal took the twins to college and started writing some crazy twisted stories (stalkers, serial killers, werewolves?!?!!. in fact, didnt Jessica even fall in love with a vampire once?? god, id pay to watch the short-lived tv series again, too! the daniel twins were smoking - the last i heard, brittany daniel was dating keenan ivory wayans and being hilarious on Always Sunny in Philadelphia as a trans woman... hmm time to do some imdb'ing.

Hardwicke did 13?!?!?!
That I didn't know. That was an intense, in-your-face, gritty film. No wonder Kristen Stewart seems like a dead ringer for Evan Rachel Wood (who is another intense actor I'd look out for). This makes Twilight even more interesting.
By the way, I'm in book 2 now, and Bella and Edward STILL haven't done it.
Yes, I did mention Sweet Valley High. I'd never admit it to anyone, publicly, but I used to read a lot of it when I was a =ehem= young adult myself. It was anorexic Robin, the diver, I couldn't forget though. Her story was the most heartbreaking and satisfying for me. Funnily enough, though that series never tackled gay issues (or maybe Francine Pascal had and I don't remember) ,and it just full of young adult heterosexual loving =) it didn't turn me straight. =)
Robert Pattinson is a SEXY MOFO
I'd hit that.
I am by no means a Twilight fan, so God knows a bunch of hot actors is the only reason I'm gonna watch this movie.
"You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads!"
the books, ugh, pretty
I've never read the books
I never really knew anything about them, I just remember always seeing them at book stores. Now I'm glad I haven't read them if the writing is terrible. I don't want to get sucked up into a story with terrible writing just to find out the ending. So instead I have been reading the classics, like Gone With the Wind. Its a good one. I suggest you all read it. And I'm not reading it just to protest the Twilight series, I've just always wanted to read it. Plus, I was a total Harry Potter freak. Why try to replace the Harry Potter fun with something that is second class?
I knew Cedric Diggory was in the movie, but I did not know that Kristen Stewart was in it. That's almost enough to make me go see it. I love me some Kristen Stewart even if she is slightly younger than me. Although, I didn't even recognize her in those picture....
Chagrin
I'm a serious twilighter. Did it annoy anyone else at the amount of 'Chagrin' felt by EVERY charachter though?
I totally agree, the writing was awful.
YES! haha. Not to mention
YES! haha. Not to mention half the time it was in the wrong context.

Maybe we should all write down our dreams
I wrote a blog post about Stephenie Meyer a couple of months ago (www.susangabriel.com/blog). She's an interesting woman.
Four years ago she was a stay-at-home mom with 3 small children. Then one night she had a dream about a vampire. The dream was so vivid that she decided to write it down. Three months later she had enough writing for the "dream" to be a book. The rest, as they say, is history.
She's since written three books in four years, all of which are simultaneously on the NY Times bestseller list, and have sold over 16 million copies. Now the movie. So is the lesson in this that we should all write down our dreams?

Reading between the lines
Reading between the lines of various interviews with Kristen Stewart, she isn't that enamoured with the character she played (too insipid, passive...?) and it has been revealed that she refused to say some of the lines written for her character, and they were changed, presumably to be less pathetic...?
Yes, Mormon woman writer. I doubt her female character would be anything but some version of Mills and Boon, circa mid-20th Century. Well, I guess a Mormon upbringing would be about that era.
want to share some vanity pictures
here in our country it will be show Nov. 26. and most of the premiere tickets are already sold out. For me, I just love twilight for it reminds me of a forbidden love that whatever risks it takes you still go for even if the option is killing your soul. i just love it. I just hope the movie wouldn't be that much far from the story. I know movies sometimes have a quite change from the book. I just wished that i'm going to feel what I feel reading the book. =)
BTW, I saw this pictures of Bella and Rosalie kissing in the vanity fair.
nice pictures Rane!
nice pictures Rane! i definitely agree about kristen stewart, she's absolutely stunning.
i just finished the second book, and even though alot of time the writing does bother me, i've stopped caring because the story is just that engaging. i'm definitely going to see the movie, not only because i read the book but because i like nikki reed alot, and i adore kristen steweart. i actually sat through in the land of women three times just to watch her.
just pass some sites and saw this one.
Grr, Meyer's writing makes
Grr, Meyer's writing makes me want to shoot myself in the head. I read the first two, and the first one was actually pretty okay, but it was all downhill from there. I'm not emotionally attached to any of the characters (except for maybe Jacob), not to mention the plot is rather weak. And I mean, come on. Sparkly vampires?
Despite this, however, I'm willing to the give the movie a chance. Who knows, maybe it'll be better than the books.
Some friends and I got
Some friends and I got hooked on the series after seeing so much about it on facebook. I like Alice best. she's totally freakin hot!
The books are one of those things I'm ashamed to love, yet i still love. Lame but addictive.
Twatlight for the win!
So I've read the entire series and it's horribly written. The characters are all 2 dimensional if we're lucky. I belong to a community on livejournal who makes fun of it. community.livejournal.com/ontd_twatlight you should check it out. Also some of us well TONS of us belive that costars nikki reed and kristen stewart have something going on. community.livejournal.com/kstew_nreed check that out as well if you want to. If you have any questions about the communities let me know.
I met Robert Pattinson in SF btw.
why?
Saw it a few hours ago...
Minor spoilers below!!
***SPOILERS!!**
It was fantastic. I loved every minute of it. The music, the directing, the scripting... ah- it was wonderful. Kristen Stewart is the perfect Bella. She tossed in so many little things (slipping frequently for example) to just make Bella come alive from book to screen. The film was much funnier than I read the book to be. I liked it.
The experience was great, too. I got there at 9:30 and waited in line for my chance at an awesome seat. There had been people standing there since 4pm. It was very nice. Quite enjoyable.
I want to go see it at least 5 more times! My only complaint- Bella was not in her jammies nearly enough. I could say a lot more but I'm running on 2 hours sleep. Go see this film!!
Kristen Stewart is...
