"Weeds": a season premiere tonight, a dimebag tomorrow

The new season of Weeds brings a particular kind of challenge for a blogger: finding new wordplay in the cannabistic world of weed. (See what I did there? Cannabistic? OK, some work, some don’t.) I mean, how many times can I say that Mary Louise Parker is smokin’?

Actually, I probably can say it over and over, as long as I post a picture that proves it. In any case, Season 4 starts tonight on Showtime with Nancy and her high-flying crew in a brand new city on the coast. (Maybe I can work in “coral reefer” somehow. No?) The new, non-suburban setting means that one of my favorite parts of the show is no longer relevant: the theme song, “Little Boxes.”

As music supervisor Christopher Noxon explains to Wired, “With Nancy moving out of Agrestic and out of her ‘little box,’ it just didn’t make sense to stick with ‘Little Boxes.’” Personally, I love the song. I’m partial to the version by the Womenfolk, which (moment of trivia) was the shortest song ever to be on the Billboard Hot 100. Raise your hand if you had an outfit, hairstyle or guitar like this. I got two out of three.

With a couple of ear-splitting exceptions (I’m looking at you, Man Man), I thought the covers of Malvina Reynolds’ classic that opened Weeds episodes in seasons two and three were awesome. In fact, munchie-loving musicians lined up to have a chance to sing it, with many recording homegrown versions of “Little Boxes” and sending them to Showtime.

Fortunately, the song’s popularity is not lost on Weeds producers. On Tuesday, Lionsgate Pictures and Weeds will release the digital-only Little Boxes Dimebag #1, with 10 versions of the theme song. Other 10-song dimebag collections will follow monthly. The compilation also sets the stage for the July 8 release of the Weeds Season 3 soundtrack.

While you’re waiting for the official releases, you can listen to music from all three seasons at Showtime’s Weeds music site.

Are you planning to watch Weeds this season? Any predictions? Will you miss “Little Boxes?”

Are Jen and Emma going to be recaping the show this season? I hope so, because I love their vlog as much as I love Weeds.

    I'm all in...

on Weeds watching!  There are reported major changes in casting and story line direction but I guess one has to watch to see if it's change for the better or if it's "if it ain't broke don't fix it" changes for the worse. But what the heck watching Mary Louise Parker weekly is not a chore:)

    i heart weeds

i'll take any changes as long as they keep the nancy/celia dynamic alive!

    I'll be there...

I've watched Weeds since the beginning and I am interested to see how such a big change is going to effect the show. But, as long as there is Mary Louise Parker, I'll be there.

I would love to see Zooey Deschanel make a return appearance.. one can dream, right?

    Little boxes on the

Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes made of tickytacky
Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes all the same
There's a green one and a pink one and a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.

And the people in the houses all went to the university
Where they were put in boxes and they came out all the same,
And there's doctors and there's lawyers, and business executives
And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.

And they all play on the golf course and drink their martinis dry,
And they all have pretty children and the children go to school
And the children go to summer camp and then to the university
Where they are put in boxes and they come out all the same.

And the boys go into business and marry and raise a family
In boxes made of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.

Love this song a little too much! haha

    Um, as long as Mary-Louise

Um, as long as Mary-Louise Parker is on my TV screen (well, computer) doing anything, I am there. Seriously, I don't care where the storylines go. If her mouth is moving, it is of no preference to me what words are coming out.

...that sounded less dirty in my head.

Up until the punching, it was a real nice party...

LITTLE BOXES made the transition - all is right with the world

Personally, I only caught the occasional episode from last season. However, this season’s premiere was so well done I will probably become inducted into the MLP worshiper ranks in very short order.

In addition to enjoying the show to a shameful excess, I learned some interesting trivia when a sho-time leech friend of mine stated, "I am so relieved they kept the song!"

Turns out this friend was studying Tetrahydrocannabinol one evening and he became so...anxious, shall we say? that he could only be restored to his normal state of mind by hearing Little Boxes played over and over on a loop. It is for him I am thankful that this song survived the trip to the new season. I am sure the political activist, Malvina Reynolds, would be happy to know her lyrical critique of the bourgeoisie is still making a difference in people's lives all these years later.

p.s. I wonder if the actual Californian city (Dale City) that inspired this song has any sexy hash slingers like Miss Mary Louise Parker... if so, a re-location might be in order for me.

    Well...

Last night's episode is the last one with the song, according to producers. I recommend Jack In The Box tacos for your friend.

    Noooo, he'll be so crushed.

Noooo, he'll be so crushed. Poor thing. Thank you for the recomendation though, I'll have to see about these Tacos you mentioned...

    Weeds is Awesome

I'm definitely gonna be watching Weeds.  In fact, I just finished the first episode.  One thing that was really cool, is that I know the kid who played Rad.  I worked with him on a student film.  It's cool seeing him get good work.

This season looks like it's gonna be a fun one.  It's gonna be different since they're in a new place, though.

Well, it's time to start counting down to next week's episode.

    Love "Weeds", but...

always hated that "Little Boxes" theme song.  Sorry, just plain got on my nerves.  I would hit the Mute button until it was over.  I hope the new theme song is better.

And, I also hope "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" is better than "Californication", which absolutely sucked.

    WEEDS + Little Boxes

I have always loved the theme song. Originally the woman's voice was a little jarring to me but I warmed up to it then fell in love with it when other people did covers of it and Regina Spektor's is my favorite with deathcab for cutie's coming in second. Regina's version is actually my voicemail, but I loved it and I think it's brilliant and Mary-Louise Parker is fantastic to say the least. She's adorable but intimidating at the same time, its very confusing, but I adore her. I don't have showtime so I'll have to wait and see but its a well done show with a lot of criticisim on american society so whats not to like? And Elizabeth Perkins is amazing, I love her ridiculous character.
