2009 Hot 100 Preview: Lisa Ray

Toronto-born actress Lisa Ray has been internationally appealing since she began modeling at age 16. But we got to see a whole new side of her in Shamim Sarif's films The World Unseen and I Can't Think Straight.

Ray, who is of Indian descent, played Tala, a straight Christian-Arab woman in the comedic I Can't Think Straight. Tala ends up falling for another woman, Imagine Me and You style, but deals with some hurdles in the way of her conservative parents.

I mean, just look at her, that coupled with the fact that she's played gay twice, and very convincingly so I might add, just increases her hotness exponentially. She definitely deserves a spot on the list this year, and I hope that she's cracked the top 25.

I have read that she is Polish and Indian, and one or two articles (from rather unreliable blogs/magazines) that she is Polish and Bengali, but I have never read that she is Indonesian--and, frankly, if I had never read anything about her and saw her picture, Indonesian would definitely not be one of the ethnicities that came to mind...

But anyway, I'm am ecstatic that she's on the list :-)

The line "Ray, who is of Indian descent, played Tala..." had initially read as "...Indonesian descent..."

I figured it might have just been a typo but, you know, felt the need to point it out.

Yay Finally someone I voted for made it on the list (or at least I think I voted for her. I'm pretty sure I did. It was difficult narrowing it down to only 10 women).

Yay Lisa Ray indian hotness. I loved "I Can't Think Straight". They are going to show it during pride week here!! YAY!!! Although as a plot I think The World Unseen is even more marvelous (although lacking the love scene).

Lisa Ray is a gorgeous woman. She was beautiful in both The World Unseen and I Can't Think Straight. So was Sheetal Sheth.

The World Unseen was fantastic!

I was really impressed with the movie as a whole but Lisa Ray, in particular, gave a really nuanced performance. Ah-may-zin'.

She definitely made my top 10, too.

Because I love Lisa Ray and I Can't Think Straight, I just thought I'd be really annoying and point out that Tala isn't really a straight woman who falls for another woman. Leyla has always wondered if she's gay but hasn't acted on it, Tala was in love with another woman at 18, but thinks being gay is "no way to live". She's actually the one who has been with a woman before. So the film is more about dealing with the conflict between who you are and who a conservative culture expects you to be. Tala's family suspects she might be gay, but would never say so - as long as she gets married and doesn't shame the family, all is ok. The film is, in part, about Tala's journey from having that view herself to realising that she needs to be braver than that. I'm anglo-Indian and the Indian side of my family think I'm too busy with work and academic success for a boyfriend, and they know nothing of my 10 year relationship with a woman (all my father's idea), so the story really resonated with me - that's why I felt the need to jump in with my nitpicking here!

Lisa Ray literally took my breath away the first time I saw her in Water. Sure, there are a lot of beautiful Indian celebs and I have the feeling that Padma Lakshmi and Freida Pinto will end up on a higher spot than Lisa this year but neither has that electrifying effect on me like she does. She also seems to be very articulate in her interviews. And she plays gay in two movies. Hallelujah!

I voted for Lisa and want her to be on the Top 10 but I think (wishful thinking) that she will end up on Top 25.

I voted for her on my women of colour list, she just missed my top 10 then. My DVD of World Unseen arrived today so got something to strive towards if I write 1000 words of my dissertation today if i hit 4000 I will watch it lol. Hoping that means I Can't Think Straight will arrive next week then as both were on pre-order but with different retailers.

Not only is she on my list this year but she has been on my list for the last three years, I'm glad to see everyone else finally catching up lol. I think The World Unseen and I Can't Think Straight put her on more people's radar which is just fine by me because she is simply gorgeous. I also put her on my Women of Color list so who knows there may end up being quite the overlap between the two, haha.
