Amy Ray is all yours

If you had the chance, what would you ask Amy Ray? Perhaps you're a huge Indigo Girls fan and you've always wanted to know what the ladies include on their rider. Or, you love Amy's record label, Daemon Records, and are dying to know how she chooses her artists (she can afford to be picky.)

Luckily, the musician, the woman, and the lesbian legend, Amy Ray, is willing to tell you what you want to know, AfterEllen.com readers (within reason, of course.) We'll be talking to her next week and will be asking her the questions you have for her. Please send your inquiries by Monday, July 21 to trishbendix@gmail.com. We'll sort through them and ask her the most insightful, relevant, and possibly hilarious questions you have.

Please note: no marriage proposals or sexual advances. Remember, the questions come from you but I will be the one asking, and I don't think my girlfriend will much appreciate my asking Amy Ray to "take part in the pain of my passion play."

CHICKENMAN

So, Chickenman on 1200 Curfews is one of my favorite Indigo Girls songs.  But, I'll be honest, & until today I had no idea what a Chickenman was.  Thank goodness for the internet, because my question to Amy Ray (whom I love love love her music, style & sass) was going to be to explain the Chickenman song.  But, thanks to the Internet, I found the explanation below:

Is the chickenman supposed to signify/be a reference to someone in particular? the rest of the song?

I saw them play this live and Amy explained the song during an instrumental break. It was amazing because it was the first time the song made any sense to me. The chicken man was an old guy selling stuff on the side of the highway. I remember she started her explanation by saying that, when they were first touring, she was driving around in a beat up VW(?) and she was saddened seeing so many dead animals (roadkill: "median" cat(?), dead deer, prairie dogs, rabbit). She said something about the woman who was beaten in Austin; again, another reflection from life on the road at the time, I think. She then said something about how "all the carnage" can upset a person so much that she would end up walking around the street with a loaded gun not knowing what to do but feeling desperate; sounded like something she really did one day ("darkness into darkness/all the carnage of my journey/makes it harder to be living"). But without the explanation, the song would have made no sense.

When I was delivering pizzas in Austin around about 1995, an old homeless drifter came into our pizza joint and was hanging out talking to us in the kitchen. I happened to have Indigo Girls playing on the house sound system and this sound came on. Out of nowhere, this man turns to me all excited and says "This song is about me!! I met them!! They're gay you know." LOL

I honestly cannot attest to the truth of his statement, but he did know lots of details about them, including the fact they they were touring in an old van. I kind of like to think that he was telling the truth... :)

No marriage proposals?

No marriage proposals? Damn.

I would love to come up with some great question, but I just know that's not gonna happen. =/

amy ray

just wondered if Amy ever regrets not expanding her solo career when she was younger or would that have detracted from indigo girls  too much.

and where do you buy your shirts...

You and your fans

I've always thought the relationship between a public figure and her fans is an interesting one. In your music you have always put yourself out there in a very personal way, which allows us to know a little something about you and Emily as people and gives us a feeling of "connection". At the same time we are mostly a sea of anonymous strangers to you. How do you see this relationship? Is it difficult to draw the line between personal and too personal? Is it different in your solo career compared to being an Indigo Girl?

Thanks for the music,

Lorinda

Amy Ray

When you last played the UK you were waring a Bush-baiting T-shirt, I'm curious to know your views on how the Obama v Hilary situation played out and what you think will happen in the election this year.

Come back to Britain soon!
