From the Cheap Seats: Women at the Olympics

This week's episode of From the Cheap Seats is absolute chaos as Michelle and Becca try to fit a week's worth of Olympics into a short time frame. Michelle admits a new obsession with gymnastics while Becca thanks Gro for bringing her to handball.

Hahah nice vlog ladies! And

Hahah nice vlog ladies! And you are not the only ones with the 'olympic fever' - I don't know what to do when it ends *sigh*

I love the Olympics!

I love the Olympics! Unfortunately, most of the it happens during the day here in Germany, so I constantly check for new results at work - it's very distracting. And on top of this, all live stream is blocked at work :-(

And thumbs up for discovering the awesomeness of Gro Hammerseng!  She's an amazing Handball player and hopefully will lead Norway to Gold.

Kinesio tape

a special elastic material designed to support muscles while offering an unimpeded range of motion. Walsh had shoulder surgery last fall to remove bone chips, bone spurs and scar tissue that had built up over a lifetime of setting and spiking. The tape, and taping method, help stabilize the shoulder during the match and aids in circulation.

US Womens Professional Soccer is supposed to start up again next year. *fingers crossed*

YOU'LL DO SOFTBALL NEXT WEEK?!?!?! geez!!

on the commentary...Why the hell is Mary Corillo doinf fluff pieces?!?!? I think she has earned more than that! I guess there was not enough room for her and Bob's ego in the room.

I WANT TO SEE A NORWEGIAN HANDBALL GAME!! I WANT TO SEE GRO AND KAT!!! HOW AM I MISSING THEM?!?!

Norway-Romania

The best handball game yet of the Olympics will be played at 8 am Central Europen Time, which is 2pm New York time, so if you can watch it on the internet of the NBC or any other American internet channel (I'm assuming you're American, if not I apologize) you really should:)

Norway vs Romania, two of the greatest handball teams in the world are playing tomorrow, and it will be fast, rough and full of gorgeous women fighting with all they've got!!

watching now

I'm watching this game right now. This is craziness! The first game I watched was online so there was no commentary...it makes much more sense when people who sorta know what they're taking about are commenting. "Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive." ~Howard Thurman

I guess I need to write something here.

The opening stuff is great. Honestly I get bored wayyyyyyyy to fast and just let my girlfriend tell me when stuff happened. I watched the USA walk out and that's about it.

How sad that the little girl who sang, IT WASN'T EVEN HER SINGING. How do you tell a child, 'Sorry, I know you sang this but you are too ugly for tv so we are going to use someone else.'

Also there have been at least 3 dopping up charges so far and I know it cost at least one of them to lose their medal.

Swimming has been amazing and my favorite thing to watch so far. Phelps has been outstanding and even last night was WOW. I was really nervous. And go Torres&Soni!

I am Olympics crazy and everytime someone asks what I'm doing it's the same thing.

Gymnastics: You know those China girls are like 9 years old, ha. They even showed one of the girls' age during the womens all-around as 15! A lot of those scores were such BS. If this were taking place in anywhere else but China, it would have been different.

Olympics obsessed

I'm so glad I'm not the only one obsessed with the Olympics. I have it on almost all the time, to just see what's going on. I am also rooting for Michael Phelps, I usually root for the underdog, but I really want him to make it, and its no spoiler now that he only needs one more gold tonight and he'll have a new record. I've been all over Women's basketball and have been trying to catch Soccer just for Natasha Kai. I need to see those tattoos in action lol

The Norwegian handball girls will be playing against Romania August 17 at 14:00 Beijing Time (that will be 2:00 on the East Coast, 1:00 in Texas for you Gato, and midnight on the West Coast).

Go double-check on the NBC Olympics website to check the broadcast schedule.

The "Gro's arm around Katja" scene Becca mentioned is this one:

and here's a video containing scenes from the Norway vs. France match

Handball is the best!

Great vlog! I too have the olympic fever, and it's quite exhausting really but I have no idea what I'll do with my days when it's over...

I'm so glad that you have discovered handball, it's the greatest sport ever! And Gro and Katja (her cute partner) are amazing players! Hope you'll catch the Norway-Romania game, it should be exciting.

gato's picture

THANKS LADIES!!!

I will be clearing the DVR today...Don;t want to miss that match if it is on the air! Managed to catch a Field Hockey game this morning...*drool*

OK..is it just me or are ALL the athletes in these games REALLY HOT?! I have yet to see an unattractive person.

OH and Rowing finals are coming up today...I am in love with the women rowers! Better be on TV. But with track starting..we may not see it. I have also found tha that first few days women were EVERYWHERE on every channel..and now I keep seeing men in the obscure events, like rowing.

handball really is the best

oh and if you thought the scene of Gro with her arm around Katja was something, take a look at this other bench-side scene.

so cute!

I did see that! They are so adorable and I think their willingness to actually look like partners even when they know thousands of people are watching is better for the lesbian community than any high profile coming out story. It shows how natural it is and their openness about it is done in such a way that the media is forced to focus on other things (like the game itself) rather than showing picture after picture in an effort to determine whether they are gay ladies. Love them.

CBC

CBC has some good coverage in Canada.

The Canada/US Soccer game was amazing.  We came so close to winning.  I'm a little worried about Brittany Timko.  She took a hard fall and Hope Solo's knee went right into her kidneys.

The fact that we kept the US to only a goal, with our backup no less, is amazing.  I was so proud of the Canadian team.

The one with the black tape

The one with the black tape wasn't Misty May, it was Kerri Walsh. The tape is on her shoulder because she had surgery and wasn't getting the full rotation of her arm and extension. The tape helps circulate the blood in her shoulder; therefore, she was 100% better.

It was said that during Athens and even after, Kerri Walsh wasn't playing at 100%. She was playing with a shoulder injury the whole time. Now, after the surgery and full recovery, she is playing at 100%.

By the way, heia Norge! =]

Thanks and Gymnastics

I had never seen your vlog before and I found it to be very entertaining so, thank you. :) I've become completely obsessed with gymnastics. I mean, seriously, how incredible is Nastia Liukin? No words. I'm very much looking forward to the US vs. AUS basketball game, being a huge Storm/LJ fan. Sorry US but I gotta go with my girl on this one. Goo Aussies!

Gro(w)

Lovely vlog....thanks girls!!

Congrats on discovering handball, your world will never be the same;-) And to be able to watch Gro Hammerseng in your very first match, not bad at all. You got it right in the end, it's only 3 steps allowed, (not just 3 seconds you get to hold the ball)....now how crazy would the sport be with a 3 seconds rule!?!

While I am here I thought I would just add to the proof of Gro's awesomeness (*hint: check out the hand on the arm thing in the first photo - as cute as can be :-)) Those arms and shoulders!!!! Just WOW!!!

Most beautiful girl at the Olympics, if you ask me that is!!!

3 second rule

I just wikipedia-ed the rules while I was watching and it said there were both a 3-second and a 3 step rule. Is that not the case? "Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive." ~Howard Thurman
viking's picture

3 steps and 3 seconds

The three second rule says you can't hold the ball for more than three seconds. You can however keep it in your possession for more than three seconds by dribbling. The same with the three step rule. You can walk/run as many steps as you like as long as you dribble, but not take more than three steps while holding the ball. Hope that made sense. :-)

I'm Hooked

I didn't get into the Olympics right away, but now that I've been bitten by the bug, I just can't stop watching.

It's hard to not cheer for Michael Phelps--what he's doing is nothing short of amazing and I'm hoping that he's able to set the record for medals collected at an individual Olympics. I was particularly excited about the relay win because a swimmer from my alma mater swam the third leg (Go State!).

I can't believe Michelle forgot to talk about tennis this week--there were some pretty big upsets.

I was talking to a friend earlier about the US Women and what a kick ass job they're doing. If you look at the total number of medals America's won thus far, women account for over half...and if you subtract Phelps from the men's side, women are winning a bulk of the medals for the US.

Our men's soccer team is out, but our women are still in it and looking great (Natasha Kai, ftw!). Our softball team looks unbeatable, while our baseball team is floundering. And while I'm as happy as anyone to see our men's team back on track (the redeem team, they're calling them), our women's team just coasted to their 29th win. Women rock!

That being said, the thing I'm looking forward to more than anything in the next week doesn't involve the US at all:  a rematch of the women's World Cup championship on Monday w/ Brazil and Germany. That's going to be awesome.

I tired of Bob Costas' commentary during the opening ceremony, but I'll cut him some slack because he interviewed President Bush better than most news journalists have recently.

I really enjoyed watching

I really enjoyed watching the vlog!  I'm also pretty olympic obsessive.  I record stuff during the day and then stay up very late at night (& drink lots of coffee at work!).  I don't mind listening to Bob Costas all that much, but I always get excited when the latenight show comes on because Mary Carillo hosts it.  She's one of my favorite tennis commentators and you can always see how much she just loves sports.  I've been watching lots of swimming lately (how awsome was the men's relay! & I've always had a thing for Natalie Coughlin), gynastics (I'll admit that I stood up & sang along during the women's all-around medal ceremony), beach volleyball, badmitton, softball, ect...
I've been kind of dissapointed in the US tennis team.  Blake did beat Roger Federer, but then he lost to Gonzales in the next round, the Bryan Brothers lost in the semis (but did take home the bronze!) and both of the Williams sisters went out early.  I am looking forward to Venus & Serena playing for the gold in the doubles final tonight.  Okay, it's time for the men's last swimming relay so I have to stop rambling so I can watch it!!!

TENNIS!!

AHHH tennis is coming on next weeks vlog, including Softball!! But first on tennis, I just have to say that i'm rooting for Fernando Gonzalez because, well he is from Chile (my 2nd home!). I was kind of mad that Federer lost cause I was looking forward to Nadal vs Federer rematch but oh well.....whenever a US tennis player goes up against a Chilean, my latina blood takes over and I root for Chile :P BUT blake should have beat fernando cause he beat Federer in straight sets!!! oh well..vamos Fena que si se puede!! And dont get me started on the US womens tennis *shakes head*

track and field started so now thats going to take over the tv but thats ok, everything is streaming online :)

Handball= INTENSE! so glad we finally discovered the sport...we were a lil slow on the uptake with that one! haha! Gro is my new obsession...well, thats a bit much, but she is fricking awesome!

I was looking forward to a

I was looking forward to a Feder/Nadal final too, and I REALLY wanted Roger to win.  I like Gonzalez too (he was awsome last year at the Aussie Open), but as you mentioned Blake losing to him was a big upset.  Plus I knew Blake would have to play either Djokavic or Nadal for the bronze.

I just brewed a pot of coffee so that I can finally catch a Norway handball match online tonight.  I guess I should look up the rules now so that I'm not too confused...I'm excited!

Handball at last;)

I guess it's high time handball was "discovered" in the US. It is a tough, fast, interesting game both to play and  watch. If you want to learn more about it, go and visit: http://www.smfforums.com/forums/wwwgrohammersengcomforums/index.php

Gro? Gru? Gruh? Groo?

Okay folks, if you're gonna make fun of our pronunciation, you have to tell us how to actualyl pronounce her name. The only thing I can find online is "Gro, pronounced Gru," but I still don't know if that is supposed to rhyme ith "uhhhh...." or "oooo!

Gro

I'm not Norwegian but I think the best way to know how to pronouce Gro name is, listenning the Norwegain say it.

Watch this video Gro's name saying at the begining of the cutest vid.

Accents

Actually, the reporter who says Gro's name in that video has a very funny accent, so if you wish to say Gro's name with a dialect from Western Norway, then that's your video:)

This brief and also, very cute video has a reporter who says Gro's name the way it's commonly pronounced:)

It is hard to tell because

It is hard to tell because you guys don't pronounce "o" in its any forms like Norwegians do in "Gro". It is a monothong. A short wovel if you wish.

Beach Volleyball

It was Kerri Walsh that had the black tape. It's called "kinesio tape". She wears it to increase blood flow to that area following her shoulder surgery last fall. It supports the muscles and allows them to relax.=)

Gro and Katja

I am glad to know that someone else on this continent now understands my obesssion with handball. LOVE LOVE LOVE team norway! Cutest couple on the planet!

It does break my heart a little though every time I hear something about Gro and Katja's name is not mentioned. Katja is an absolute phenomenon when she plays and is just as gorgeous as Gro in my opinion... amazing eyes and adorable smile.. too cute! ..and im certain im not the only one who thinks so :)

Katja

You know, I was just thinking about that, actually. I don't know enough about either of them to really talk in depth, but from what I've gathered in the games I've watched it seems like the camera trains on Gro more often. I've watched one on TV (with commentary) and two online (without commentary) and I find that it is difficult for me to track Katja because they are always zooming in on Gro.
