Cynthia Nixon talks to students about voting against Amendment 2

Today in Florida, Amendment 2 (much like California's Prop. 8) is on the ballot, asking voters to decide whether marriage is defined as being between a man and a woman. Out actress Cynthia Nixon was on the campus of the University of Miami, urging student voters to vote no on the amendment, and spoke to MTV News about why she felt the need to make the trip down south.

Florida residents, are you listening? If you won't take Miranda's Cynthia Nixon's advice, whose will you take? (If it's Sarah Jessica Parker's, she's for Obama and gay marriage, too.)

Amendment 2

This amendment is more than just the "anti-gay" amendment. What the amendment would do is not only define marriage as a union between one man and one woman, but it would it also prohibit the recognition of any union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent to marriage. This means that not only same-sex couples are affected by this; all unmarried couples will lose their benefits and will not have their relationships recognized in the state.

It is an awful, awful amendment and when I went to vote, there seemed to be a lot of support for it which horrified me.

Oh My God, That Britni's Shameless

I wish this had gotten more press

I hadn't even heard about it.

God, all this anti-gay propaganda is infuriating

It will be very difficult

It will be very difficult. As far as I know, once it is passed it definitely gets added to the constitution and will only be removed if it is placed on a ballot in the future, asking voters if it should be removed or not.

the court system...

That is why we have the court system, a LOT of unfair bills have been passed in the past that have been ruled unconstitutional. I hope this is one more of those!

This amendment puts the "1

This amendment puts the "1 man 1 woman" rule into the constitution and also prohibits any kind of civil unions or domestic parnerships.

I'm part of a team of volunteers called "NO ON 2" and today I saw many many voters that were voting in favor of this amendment.

When I approached a woman today to encourage her to vote "No" she said to me: "But do you know how many gays are in Florida now? It's becoming like another California!"

This was the same response I received from most of the supporters of the amendment and it amazes me how uninformed these voters are.

Back to volunteering for us down here

We're going to have to put in a ballot to repeal it and... win by 61% , which is basically impossible.

The sad part is most of FL actually supports civil unions.

There is a lot of support

There is a lot of support for Amendment 2 here in Florida and I'm so afraid it is going to pass. It's strange because sooo much attention is being paid to the same-sex marriage part of it, rather than the fact that it will take away rights from all unmarried couples, as TheVaginaWig mentioned. I think there would be a lot less support for it if everyone realized it's about a lot more than making gay marriage unconstitutional. Another problem I've seen is in the writing of the amendment. I've had gay and pro-gay friends tell me they plan to vote yes on it, because they think that yes means they're voting FOR gay rights. I've had to explain that no, voting yes and very very very bad.

Go Cynthis

It's great to see Cynthia out and about supporting LGBT issues- particularly when so many people in the "Sex in the City" cult identify with her as "Miranda".

on a serious note

I'm not even very public or out to most people but my facebok status has been set against amend 2 for a long time now, and a few freinds have either said something in support of or asked me about it.

I wish more attention had been given to amend 2 but now i can only hope and pray for the best. There are already 4 laws on the books in FL prohibiting gay marriage, but this would make them permanaent and unable to be overturned by judges later. The only anti amend 2 ads out there focus on senior citizens and their straight domestic partners.

Sad to say it, but i think that if the gay side of this battle was promoted it probably wouldnt pass in florida. An earlier study said it was about 55% in favor of, and all they need is 60% to pass this. Its seriously disgusts me.

I love my home state, I'm proud to be from here. I grew up a black redneck who likes racing and the country, nightclubs and college parties, whos never lived more than 30min from the beach, who cant live with out seafood and rolls down the windows to smell the ocean.

I cant say im gonna marry a female when i grow up, or if i'll marry a dude. But I know for sure when I grow up that if I LOVE somebody with all my heart and soul and want to marry them i want the right to do that! The thought that I would not be able to do so in MY HOME, Florida, saddens me tremendously. I didnt even expect to get emotional as I write this.

In all honesty, I prayed before I voted today. That the right choice would be made. I was raised like most southern black christians(and many other ppl too), to know that God is and always has been behind us throughout so many trials and tribulations and oppressions. My spiritual faith is strong, but I do not agree with it being used as a weopon to oppress others. That to me is not what God created us all for. This battle is separate from the religous and spiritual doctrine they are trying to put behind this though. This is a government issue and it is unconstitutional, uncivil, and just plain wrong.

I really wish I had personally stepped up more in this campaign to fight amend 2  in my home state and I'm proud of Cynthia Nixon and all the other volunteers who did.

Thank You Cynthia

(FYI...it's "Amendment 2", not Proposition 2.)

What the other posters said about this Amendment is dead on.  It's not just about gay marriage.  This would hurt straights and gays, especially seniors.  This amendment would completely outlaw civil unions and domestic partnerships.

Absolutley sickening.

I have a very bad feeling

I have a very bad feeling about amendment 2 in FL since I just moved to CA last month. Most of the citizens in FL are very homophobic and the kids are born that way. People that I have gone to school with are agianst homosexuals and I feel that most people would vote yes on amendment 2. There was this case about a principal suspended several kids for standing up for their gay friend who was being discriminated. Most of them are very old fashioned and believed that gays shouldn't even be in this world.

I have more hope for the prop 8 to be rejected in CA because Californians have a more open mind about gays. A huge percentage of gays and lesbians are in CA compared to FL's amount. There could be more in FL, but no one stands up for their rights or it never really gets into the media and really made into a big thing.

I'm definitely hoping for a repeal on the next ballot since I'm pretty sure Amendment 2 would get passed, but Prop 8 stands a chance.

I hear you MissxCakes

It will pass.  And I will spend the rest of my days doing whatever I can to get it repealed.  I too am in tears.  No lie.  No kidding.  I am sick.

What I find most telling is that wherever I went, overwhelmingly I saw signs that OPPOSED Amendment 2.  That just tells me that the homophobes don't want people to KNOW they're homophobes.  That tells me that they're embarrassed or scared to let their feelings to be known....as well they should be.  They should be ashamed of themselves as the damage this will end up doing will be felt across orientation lines.  F*ck Florida Rednecks.  If you look at the numbers, we overwhelming lost in the panhandle counties.  That's not shocking but it's no less sickening.

Massachusetts is looking really good right now.  P-Town, I miss you.

The most frustrating part

The most frustrating part is that from what I noticed, most people had no idea what Amendment 2 meant. Some people were also confused with the wording.

To be honest, this is passing because of lack of information. We're not California. We don't have all the celebrities speaking against amendment 2. We don’t have the money to air the ads. Especially when Florida4marriage has been playing dirty and taking donations from anonymous sources. Can you say ILLEGAL?

Oh, and I think we can panic now.

Again, I agree MissX

I'm interested in seeing how the legal action against those who supported 2 turns out.  Florida4marriage is SHAM.  I hope they get their butts handed to them.  BTW, I'm in St. Pete.  It's very gay friendly here as compared to a lot of other areas.

MissxCakes's picture

I'm in Fort Lauderdale,

I'm in Fort Lauderdale, so I've definitely been spoiled by living in one of the most gay-friendly cities in Florida. To be honest, I didn’t think this would pass. I’m very scared of what will happen next.

Ahhh_Cool's picture

I went through the same

I went through the same thing here in Tallahassee. I'm surrounded by college students and even the non-students I'm around are usually pretty liberal. I saw soooo many more Vote NO bumper stickers than Vote YES ones, sooooo many more signs for voting NO, etc. For a while, I too believed it would be rejected with no real problem. I guess this will teach us to underestimate the rural counties.
MetalManic's picture

I completely agree with

I completely agree with what some of you said about confusion over the wording. While I was lurking around a few voting precincts today, I realized that some people believed that they were supposed to vote "Yes" if they were in favor of domestic parnerships. We had to keep repeating that we were looking for a "No" vote. The conversation would end with a comment that went something like: "YES, we want you to vote NO on Amendment 2,"  which would confuse the voter all over again...

Before now, I have never witnessed any open homophobia in Tampa. Like someone said earlier, situations like this lead me to believe that the homophobes are hiding. But yet, homophobia seems to be alive and well in the hearts of about 60% of Floridians. Yes, this is about 10 steps back for us as homosexuals, but we wont stop fighting. I strongly believe that ignorance was a deciding factor in the passing of this amendment. But on a happier note, just our mere presence says that we have a chance. As the saying goes, "If you are thinking, you are winning" and I encourage everyone out ther to educate themselves on what is happening around you and be aware of the impact. Mindlessly following the herd hinders our progression as a country.

UGH, even though I became a registered Florida resident in late August, I didn't change my voter's registration for fear I wouldn't make the deadline (that's what the lady at the DMV told me). I wish I would have changed it because the outcome of Amendment 2 could really make an impact on whether or not I stay in Florida after receiving my Master's degree.  Even after moving down here, I never heard anything regarding this Amendment until just a few weeks ago.  Ridiculous. :(

If only Florida housed as many famous people as California

Maybe we would have had a fighting chance.  That's all I read on all the celebrity blogs and entertainment news everywhere was who was speaking out against Prop. 8.  I know we couldn't take donations from out of state organizations/people but I can't help but think Fla's Amendment 2 got lost in the all the Prop. 8 buzz.

The Red Seed's post was great.  This amendment is simply another punch to our faces.  I wonder now, what will happen to the Domestic Partner benefits that my company offers??  If we follow Michigan, they won't be allowed.  Infuriating.

EDITED TO ADD:  I realize that Prop. 8 is different in that it takes away a right already given.  Amendment 2 "defines" something that is already defined by 4 state laws.  I understand why Prop. 8 got the press and Amendment 2 didn't.  I just wish they could have both been fought together, but again...I understand the restrictions and why they couldn't be.

The Situation in Michigan

Although the situation in MI looked really grim at first with our stupid attorney general saying that the marriage ban precludes DPBs and the supreme court outlawing health insurance for domestic partners, companies and universities (especially the University of Michigan) have fought this crap tooth and nail.

UM got around the issue by making it an option to add a "qualified adult" or something to that effect to one's benefits (i.e. a domestic partner).  So there is hope even though these stupid amendments are crap and really poorly written.  They hurt more people than just our community.

Panik's picture

UM is safe?

So the UM "partner benefits" wouldn't be affected by this amendment? It's so sad though... that Miami-Dade JUST got domestic partnership laws granted. "Stacey Merkins is a fu**ing c*nt! Say it say it say it!"
RedHeadRiot's picture

We're all warriors!

We're fighting hard for Prop 8 too.  It's so close that we are really freaking out here.  California has a lot of power in the country and that's why people were rallying so hard here.  What us Californians do usually trickles down to other states, and that's why the fucking Mormons and other religious fundamentalist groups funneled millions of dollars into this battle from Utah, Arizona, etc.  The bigots here were even mailing millions of fliers to voters this past Saturday that said that Barack Obama was against gay marriage and supports a yes on 8 vote.  Barack disputed this, has always said No on 8, but it was too late to send out a mailer to the same people to counter these lies.  Additionally, it only takes 50% +1 vote to amend the California Constitution, so it clear that the bigots think they have a chance here.  We won't know for a couple of hours, but at last polling, we were only defeating the marriage ban by about 4%.  Not good for California and not good for the rest of the country.

NCLR does have the Florida election info on it's site and was doing a lot of work there to try to defeat your amendment.  Hopefully, with Obama's win, we will have a repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act and that LGBT people will be added as a protected class to the hate crimes laws.

Keep the hope alive.  We are not going to disappear, even if the bigots want to vote us out of our legal marriages.  It won't last long with a new liberal president on our side.

I'm so sad

I love my Florida but I know that when I am done with college there is no place for me. I'm in Tampa Bay, and I tried to rally against it but there was just too much money into the support. This makes me so sad to know that I was basically just bitch slapped by the majority of voters in my state. There are a lot of college students here, but I think there are more old retirees that live here. I feel like there really isnt anything for me in my home anymore. There were a lot of supporting ads on tv and stuff than there was against it. I don't even know what to think. =[

Proud Gay American-Fight for Equality Now's picture

I just cried too...but now we need to fight!

I was a volunteer in the St. Pete area to work against amendment 2 and i learned a lot.  I stood on my feet at the early voting sites and drove for supplies and worked all night tonight.  Now that the tears have dried the realization is that hate, prejudice and bigotry has won.  So we need to wake up. Women's suffrage didn't come easy, what will it take to repeal these Jim Crow laws?  Organize, get together, let's turn every f*#%*in Pride Parade into an Equality Parade and stop prancing around in our under wear and throwing out condoms to people.  This is a call to action.  Get a hold of Equality of Florida and sign up.

Nichole4FSU's picture

Great Post

I've attended St. Pete Pride the past few years and I too feel like we need to make it more about PRIDE and EQUALITY and not a sex parade where the homophobes and bible thumpers point to us and say, "SEE??  They are freaks, they don't deserve marriage or they aren't fit to adopt."

I donated to Say No to 2, I have the sign in my yard, I am HRC Partner, and I've donated to Equality Florida.  It's not enough.  We need our straight friends and families to stand up for us too.  We cannot do this alone.  And yes, this is a call to action.  Like I said, I will spend the rest of my days doing whatever is needed to get this crap back out of the constitution.  I can't move, but if I could....I'd be gone.  But a part of me feels like that's quiting and I don't want to quit.

"I'm not sorry for what I did. I'm sorry for what I didn't do."

I agree...

I went to St. Pete Pride and there were these people walking around taking our pictures and instigating us and saying that we were all going to hell and whatever. I think I ended up spending more time arguing with those annoying homophobes than enjoying myself.

When I'm done with college in a few years, I'm totally moving away. Even if it means leaving my family. I can't come out completely because the area I live in has a HUGE homophobic population. Mostly old people, but these are the people I have to deal with each day. I don't know how else to help or what I can do to feel more accepted =[

Proud Gay American-Fight for Equality Now's picture

CHANGE IS WHAT WE VOTED FOR...NOW LET'S DO IT OURSELVES....

I HOPE THAT EVERY ONE HERE IN THIS FORUM FINDS ONE WAY TO GET INVOLVED AND FIND OUT HOW WE CAN TURN PRIDE INTO EQUALITY.  We need to be better examples of citizens who demand, demonstrate, and lead others down a path of understanding.  Let us get involved in our local politics and yes my whole family and every one at work understood the damage this Amendment would do to all of us.  Part of our challenge is fighting the stereotype so people will listen first, and then being brave enough to say it.  I see way to many gay people complaining but then they are not involved and they are not out.  Once people know you as a person they get over it.  We need to be protected against hate crimes and keep our spirits strong. Don't back down!

I have never been to pride there, or anywhere for that matter, but I am taking this as a lesson that I should get more involved. Even if im just repping the B in LGBT, everyones voice needs to be heard, and as happy as I am about the larger victory tonite, I can't help but to hope and pray that we are able to step up and bring this and all discrimination down somehow.

happy/sad

it's so incredible to see FL go for Obama and have him win the presidency. But, it's horrifying to see amendment 2 pass in FL. I really believe people did not understand what was at stake here (the wording was purposely confusing and too much emphasis given on the 1 man 1 woman thing).  there should have been more education/advertising on amendment 2. Prop 8 got so much media and amendment 2 hardly got any. 90% of people in FL protected with domestic partnerships are heterosexual couples, most people with PoA’s are straight, too (children, siblings, parents, etc). To say that we don’t know what the economic impact will be of this amendment in FL- why didn’t they look at Michigan? They passed this a while back and many people lost benefits, etc.. If you want to protect marriage why don’t you go and ban divorce? See how that flies. ‘sanctity’ of marriage my booty. Hopefully, a few years from now, we’ll be able to vote out this narrow-minded amendment. However, just like we tried to vote out the amendment that banned Asians from owning land here (and didn’t succeed) I’m not too confident that will ever happen.

LiveToWrite's picture

Sad

I couldn't have said it better myself.

I've been so confused as to why Amendment 2 has not gotten more media coverage or even recognition by the general public.

As horrified as I am that Florida voters passed the Amendment, I'm also painfully aware that it was most likely passed because of misinformation.  The pro-2 ads that aired leading up to today actually claimed that the anti-2 groups were lying by saying that the amendment would affect other people than just gays and lesbians.  They claimed that "all it would do" is define marriage as the union between one man and one woman.  But now domestic partnerships or civil unions will not be an option for Floridians...gay or straight.  I wonder how long it will take people to realize what they've actually voted into law.

I can't imagine it will be overturned anytime soon, if ever, so I suppose it's time to start shopping for a new state...

Melissa Hsu's picture

Don't give up too soon...

This could still be overturned by the courts for being unconstitutional.
