From the Cheap Seats: European women's basketball season tips off

This week's episode of From the Cheap Seats marks the opening of the European women's basketball season. Becca recaps the most important games, which all happen to involve teams from Russia that are laden with American players. CSKA, Ekaterinbur and Spartak are the three teams to follow in Europe right now, as they include American favorites Diana Taurasi, Ann Wauters, Lauren Jackson, Asjha Jones and Sue Bird.

Also, this week brings a fresh spate of injuries in the NFL — most importantly the broken-finger cursing Tony Romo. Just how far will players go when it comes to playing with injuries?

Lauren Jackson

Umm, remember the Beijing Olympics where the USA basketball team beat the Australian Opals in the final? I'm afraid Jackson is an Aussie and you can't go claiming her as an American, which the intro para infers.

- 2008 Olympic Games (Beijing, China) Silver medal
- 2008 Olympics: #1 in Double-Doubles (5)
- 2008 Olympics: #2 in Points Per Game (17.3)
- 2008 Olympics: #2 in Total Points (138)
- 2008 Olympics: #2 in Total Rebounds (69)
- 2008 Olympics: #4 in Rebounds Per Game (8.6)

Check out her site: http://www.laurenjackson.org/ from which this little gem comes ...

Edit: Forgot to say, Penny Taylor ... Yup, also an Aussie :)

Lauren Jackson

Lauren Jackson is an Aussie, not an American as your teaser paragraph infers, though she is an American and Australian favourite. :)

FIBA Europe

They've got a site up for EuroLeague, EuroCup and EuroBasket. Box scores, standings, whatnot, right here.

Good stuff.

Becky Hammon (listed as Rebekka Linn Khammon) plays for CSKA Moscow but didn't play the last game. Just a note.

And the Russian league is just STACKED. Geez. *shakes head* Crazy stuff. I'd love to watch the UMMC Ekaterinburg vs Spartak Moscow game.

Go Colts!

Russian league

This might be helpful to some of you... If you can watch russian tv via satellite, there's a great sports programme called Planeta Sport (or Sport Planeta) and they air women's basketball. I'm not sure if the matches are aired live, but they do show lots of matches. Spartak - Famila is on right now...

the Aussies

We know, we know! We are very much aware that LJ and Penny Taylor are Aussies...believe me, we watched two of our favorite teams suffer becaues of it. Well, one more so than the other. Poor Mercury. Sigh. But they are undeniably American favorites.
