Natalie Portman gets cooler by the minute

I might have reservations about putting Natalie Portman at the top of my totally subjective Truly Perfect Women list, except Natalie does something awesome, like, every two months, to reassure me she belongs there.

Sure, 27-year-old Natalie is gorgeous, fashionable, has great taste in music and is a fellow vegan: That’s all the makings of an awesome lady. Add to that, she’s Harvard-educated, can speak Hebrew, and now designs (leather-free!) shoes. She tops all that off with a sense of humor that compels her to do some zany things in videos and short films.(Natalie’s rapping about her bad ass self in an awesome SNL video is now the stuff of legend.)

More recently, we've heard of her dropping trou for a bit part in Wes Anderson’s sprawling Hotel Chevalier. A few months ago we saw heavily circulated paparazzi shots of Natalie being amazingly calm as a cute little dog lifted his leg and took a leak all over her couture coat. But, the pictures from a moment later are more telling: The dog has finished his business and Natalie is laughing her head off.

Now, Natalie is at it again, appearing with her hirsute boyfriend, the Venezuelan-American musician Devendra Banhart, in the trippy new Bollywood-inspired video for his song "Carmensita." Check it out — Natalie turns herself into an octopus!

Are you a Natalie Portman fan? Which of Natalie’s many special qualities is your favorite?

I love Devendra's music, but damn, how did he ever score a woman like Natalie?

i'm a huge fan of NP (yes i

i'm a huge fan of NP (yes i call her NP), both the woman and the actress. She's like the new Audrey Hepburn to me (they even share that humanitarian interest). I loved her since my 13 years old when i was sitting in that movie theatre in France, watching Leon… she was 14 and i think i kinda realised i was gay because of her :D

Her best quality? her  intelligence…  she's clever in every aspect of her life. I heart that (and all the rest).

I have noticed a

I have noticed a resemblance to Audrey Hepburn for years!!! Like a physical resemblance, but you're definitely right that Portman is "the new Hepburn" for those other reasons. Along with the humanitarianism, there's also fashion style, their sophistication, and that they're both so extremely beautiful.

I'm actually not the biggest fan of Portman, she's too ethereal and I can't identify with her(I guess I just prefer earthier or crazier types)-- but I loved her in Beautiful Girls, she's my favourite character on there.

She so needs to play a lesbian

I mean, come on, that movie would break records for box office attendance by me alone.

LMFAO

You've probably had a lot of people tell you this but your comments are brilliant!  I had a good laugh, thanks!

I've always liked Natalie Portman. She creeped me out in The Professional, dead on and extremely disturbing at times.  V For Vendetta-awesome!  She was the only reason I could sit throught the new Star Wars films, she certainly acted beyond the crap/camp lines she was given.

Bridgehead's picture

She hasn't???

You mean she didn't make out with Scarlett Johannson in The Other Boleyn Girl???

O! right that was in my head;-)

Can never recognise her

For some reason, I can never recognise Natalie Portman. I've seen her in many films, I've seen her picture in many magazines and yet, everytime I see her, I ask myself who is this woman... I neither like nor dislike her, but I just wish I could recognise her. So weird how my mind blanks her out of my memory!

Oh, and I like her first name, I've got the same ;-)

IMHO

I believe when you watch a film or some show, and u see the character and not the actor....The actor is doing their job superbly. Gene Hackman is my favorite male actor for that reason...I don't see Gene Hackman the man, I see whoever character he is playing...Same thing with Natalie Portman. She is stunningly beautiful, yet all I can see is whatever character she is playing. Sometimes I find myself double-checking the credits, to be sure she is the actress playing that role...She's that good!

I agree with the common consensus that she reminds us of Audrey Hepburn, another brilliant actress and stunning beauty.

On that note, I hope that has the same prolific career that Audrey enjoyed.

She was on "Project Runway"

She was on "Project Runway" last night, too, looking as adorable as ever! She's so short next to Heidi Klum.
Gina Vivinetto's picture

Natalie on 'Project Runway'

Did you notice how politely she discussed what was wrong with the hideous dresses? It seemed to pain her to criticize the bad designers. Though some of that stuff was plain wrong.

O.o

As much as I love and respect miss Portman, her boyfriend kind of reminds me of that guy from the Forgetting Sarah Marshall movie... ick(?).
Fun video though.

Nothing like the feel of dog pee in the morning

I'm short, and I speak Hebrew.

Oddly enough, I'm nothing like Natalie Portman. more like one of the Peanuts gang. Peppermint Patty, of course.

Oh, I'm sorry, we were talking about Natalie (us Hebrew speaking Jewish girls are on first name basis).

I think that her most exceptional qulity is her ability to keep both feet on the ground. i.e. stay sane and modest in Hollywood. even (or especially) when a dog finds her pee worthy.

Look around you. this is a qulity that cannot be taken for granted.

she needs to trade up

Natalie Portman is beautiful and has a great laugh.  That guy, however, is gross.  She can do better!  Can you imagine getting into bed with that?  I think not.  The scruffy beards and hair has got to go.

Natalie Portman :D

I love her! she's so down to earth! i think if a dog peed on me and my primark coat i'd cry and scream like a little girl or maybe she just likes the smell of dog pee? either way she's realy cool and obviously beautiful

I know that Gina has

I know that Gina has criticized internet cattiness before, but in this particular case, I have no conpunctions about being catty. I said it already but I'll say it again... that guy looks like Chewbacca's hipster cousin. I look at that picture and a little part of me cries (probably the little part of me who believes that I am Natalie Portman's soulmate).

Ha ha ha--

I've heard Devendra's look described as "hot and homeless,' but "Chewbacca's hipster cousin" is far funnier.

He's Hobo Chic. Too hairy for my tastes, but I can appreciate his dark, soulful eyes. His music is great, too.

Alas, Natalie is certainly not the first beautiful girl I've pined for who has preferred the company of hairy hipsters. DAMN THE HAIRY HIPSTERS!

brackishtea's picture

How dare you!!!!

*seethes* The soulmate you refer to is ME! This declaration or love for Natalie Portman does not get thrown around, I cannot take it back unless BLOOD has been drawn! I went there, it's THAT serious...

Okay not really, but I am a fan of Natalie Portman, the lesbian gods gave a gift want it was called Closer with Natalie Portman. I was never the same again......

Hobo chic....what....the....hell?

Natalie Portman Rocks!!!

I have always like Natalie Portman, but when I read this quote by her she was elevated to icon status....

[On asked if she may be gay] "Sure. I've never dated a woman of anything like that, But, I mean, I think it's much more the person that you fall in love with – and why would you close yourself off to fifty percent of the people?"

Rolling Stone (USA) – June, 2002

ummm

because everyone is so obsessed with how great natalie portman is, they've seemed to miss the fact that that bollywood video is just plain racist. the current obsession with mainstream white culture and bollywood movies does NOT make it okay to exoticize other cultures. that boyfriend of hers isnt even of the hindi culture. and even if he was, that still wouldn't change the fact that casting natalie portman in that role is racist. doing it in the name is "art" is a crap excuse.
Gina Vivinetto's picture

I disagree that it's racist

though I appreciate your critical thinking.

However, I think the multi-culti flavor of it is such a welcome break from monotony on television. I love that it's a Venezuelan guy and a Jewish girl rockin' the Bollywood vibe to a song sung in Spanish.

It's vivid and colorful and, to me, beautiful.

Kali the Destroyer!!!

I had no idea who the heck Devendra Banhart was until that video.  But hey, put Portman and Dennings in something and I will watch it.

"Bad jokes are us, ur me."

Smagninborg's picture

Amazing

Wow, she is amazing. She was since so many years and she will be. It is because of the fact, that you can't really just point out the greatest films on her. I mean, if we would discuss Meg Ryan for example, I would have to say: Yeah, there was You've Got Mail and Sleepless In Seattle and therefor she is brilliant. But I can't point that out to Natalie Portman. Sure she did Leon and, if you will, also Closer as the "big ones". But the fact, that she is - in every role she takes - so damn perfect and creative...well. That makes her more than amazing. For me. I am sometimes so surprised, when I see her in such small, but beautiful roles (e.g. The Darjeeling Limited) and I wonder, where the hell she gets her energy from.

And by the way: Her rap on SNL is so damn stunnig...This is exactly what I mean: She has an idea, she takes a crazy instinct and finishes it with the greatest, smartest and funniest taste I have seen in a long time. And her hair...Shaved in front of the camera and looking so wonderfully beautiful. Just wow. This woman is amazing.

Xanxiu's picture

OMFG!

That SNL rap is friggin hysterical!  I should have put my bowl of raisin bran down before pressing the 'play' button.  My screen has a few more than two scoops all over it.

I love the fact that her entire 'posse' looks like America's Next Top Model contestants from Utah.

So, let me get this straight.. she's gorgeous, smart, talented.. AND funny?  That's just too much to handle.  When I saw the pic of her bf, I was like, really?  Umm.. really?

Love the dog pictures

I'm a huge fan of Natalie Portman. Not only is she adorable but she also is talented and intelligent.

I've actually heard that in addition to Hebrew she has studied French, German, Arabic and Japanese! I'm very impressed and jealous.

Natalie Portman

I can't remember the first time I started to think she was cute but it had to be a few years ago. Oddly enough the first movie I ever saw with my girlfriend at the time was Garden State, it was a great film to see in the theatres and her quirky character made her adorable. I think I've always liked her because she seems intelligent. She also seems down to earth and thats always a plus. Sadly I don't believe she's ever played a gay role but if she did I would gladly watch it. I love that she's conscious of global issues and becomes involved in charity events. I would buy her shoes but I don't need anymore and I already have a pair of vegan footwear. I give her points for having range and the her bit on SNL surely helped her appeal. Not that she needed to make herself look any better...honestly...the good qualities don't seem to stop from showing themselves.

Are you a Natalie

Are you a Natalie Portman fan? Which of Natalie’s many special qualities is your favorite?

I guess its her selfdetermination. Clearly if she says

[On asked if she may be gay] "Sure. I've never dated a woman of anything like that, But, I mean, I think it's much more the person that you fall in love with – and why would you close yourself off to fifty percent of the people?"

and she dates Cousin It then, like Cynthia Nixon, she truly "walks the talk".

exotification, hobo chic, and monotony

The comment by Sai above is right on. The notion that racist exotification of Indian culture (not to mention the sexualization of women's bodies for men's pleasure) is justified because it breaks up American pop culture monotony reeks of ignorance. White people are not exactly the trusted authority on what is or is not racist. If a lesbian pointed out on a mostly het website that something was homophobic and then was told by hets that her statement was incorrect, I don't think it would make much sense. Same here. I think its sad that so few seem to take notice when lesbians of color speak up about this kind of seeminly subtle racism.

As for "hobo chic," that is a whole other can of worms. Really? Rich het dudes are getting away with this shit, and on a lesbian website no less?
