New Music Tuesday: 3-3-09

An EP can be a blessing and a curse — sometimes five songs just aren't enough. In the case of Ladytron's new Tomorrow EP, I'm just glad to have heard the title track. "Tomorrow" is a new wave electro-pop jam that Ladytron has become known and respected for.

"I don't hate you, I want you/ enough to wait/ so please tomorrow, come back" is the impossibly catchy refrain. Check it out on MySpace, and then download the rest of the EP, which are all solid tracks themselves.

Also out this week:

Alison BrownThe Company You Keep (Compass Records)

A Nashville-based banjo genius, Alison Brown is a friend of out singer/songwriter Catie Curtis, so she's a talented musician and an ally. If you're into straight-up bluegrass-country, The Company You Keep will be of interest.

Neko CaseMiddle Cyclone (Anti-/Epitaph Records)

Speaking of country, Ms. Case is the queen of alt-indie country. Fans of Jenny Lewis' solo music will love Case's voice and style on songs like "This Tornado Loves You." After all, she's been at this a lot longer than the Rilo Kiley frontwoman.

Molly JensonMaybe Tomorrow (Nettwerk Records)

California singer/songwriter Molly Jenson creates the kind of music that's made to play on television shows — and it is. Her pop gems have made it to the premiere of Knight Rider and have also been featured on The CW's Privileged. She makes accessible and cheery love songs in the vein of Sara Bareilles, but with a guitar.

Various Artists — The Watchmen: Music from the Motion Picture (Reprise Records)

With the soundtrack's classic selection of songs featuring Nina Simone's "Pirate Jenny" and Janis Joplin's "Me and Bobby McGee," I'm even more interested to see how the movie plays out. The soundtrack is like a collection of 60s and 70s hits, with the only new track being a cover: My Chemical Romance taking on Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row."

:)

I LOVE Molly Jenson, I'm so glad that she's being shown on here :D
And thanks for the tip on the new Ladytron EP, I've been waiting for it for ages, but didn't know when exactly it was released, so yeah, thank you! :D

neko case!!

whoa, now, i love Jenny Lewis, but im going to balk at the comparison to Neko Case. Jenny is obviously fabulous (with arms outstretched? rise up with fists? awesome. and  her cover of Cold Jordan with bf Johnathan Rice might poss be my fave song of all time)... but Neko is in a class all her own!

i just saw her perform in an arts & lectures series, and live, her voice is just incredible. and she has such presence - it's amazing to see. from the tigers have spoken to blacklisted to fox confessor, she just keeps getting better, and middle cyclone is a fantastic record. im obsessed with people got a lotta nerve and the title track. oh, and this awesome little harry nilsson cover she's been playing. i cant wait till she begins touring. seriously, buy middle cyclone now!

Amen....

...sorta....i was about to get rather enraged at the jenny lewis/neko case comparison, i'll be up front, i can't stand jenny lewis....and really, no comparison to neko!!!

first row tickets to see neko, only 38 more days to go!!!!!!

and as for the ladytron ep....eh, it's just a bunch of remixes of tomorrow done by artists that are really not that good (perhaps one of the songs is worth picking up) otherwise save your money and listen to the awesomeness that is velocifero again and again and again....or buy it in the first place if you haven't already!

oh and buy middle cyclone!

Mira Aroyo!!

There ain't no party like a party with Ladytron.

Although I like their work best on Light & Magic. More electronic rather than more poppier songs.

Listening to Molly Jenson now

... and I find it very easy on the ears :) Molly Jenson's singing style and music reminds me of Jonatha Brooke.

As for The Watchmen, I can't wait to see the movie (my brother's actually borrowing my copy of the book right now).

Molly Jenson

Haven't heard of Molly Jenson previously, but I'm off to check out the music.

Another one released today that I was looking forward to - Buddy & Julie Miller "written in chalk"

neko case vs. jenny lewis

LOL. As soon as I read that section of the post I thought, "them's fightin' words!" I discovered both around the same time, and for my money Neko Case, Rilo Kiley or Jenny Lewis solo, it's all good. Both of them can really sing, which these days is an undervalued skill.

Y'all

It's "Watchmen." There is no "The" in its title.
