Oh God I'm Gay: Jay Bakker

On the first episode of AfterEllen.com's newest limited series video blog Oh God I'm Gay (there will be 10 episodes total), host Alicia Ross talks with Jay Bakker about his Revolution Church.

Bakker is the son of the recently deceased Tammy Fay Bakker, who was famously one of the first television evangelists to reach out to the gay community during the AIDS crisis. Ross talk to her son about being inclusive in his ministry and continuing in his mother's footsteps.

This vlog really excites me. Too often Christianity has vilified homosexuals, and in response, it seems that many within the LGBT community have written off Christianity.

I totally agree. It's actually a growing concern of mine, as I see more, and more lgtbq people turn away from Christ.

I am also excited by this video blog. I think there are many topics to be discussed about issues of religion and spirituality. Though I do have to take issue with your comment about many in the LGBTQ community writing off Christianity. Some people leave Christianity because they re-evaluate their beliefs and find out that Christianity is not for them. I grew up with in good old Colorado Springs, home of New Life church and Focus on the Family. This negative experience did send me into a state of apathy (a defense mechanism and maybe this is what you are referring to), but after this apathetic state and as I got older I began to question. I began my own personal religious study class and began reading on comparative religion and looking at religion through the lens of history. Through this long journey I found my core beliefs and myself. I am now an atheist. I may arrive at a different conclusion then some people, but it doesn't mean my journey was any less meaningful.

But anyway, I hope this vblog will open dialogue not just between people of faith, but also the nonreligious and the apathetic.

I'm excited about this VLOG!

I'm so very impressed with AE and this vlog!! I was raised in a Christian home and am still a Christian to this day...Gay and a Christian...I'm proud of being both!! There are alot of young gay/christian teens who need to be exposed to this...they need to know that Church's like this exist and they need to know that God does absolutely love them no matter what!! Thanks for this vlog!!

I watched a documentary once about Jay Bakker and Revolution Church, and was just amazed by him and those around him. I don't really have a lot of respect for religious leaders, but Jay has it. I wish I lived in NY to be able to visit one of his meetings.

I have listened to the podcasts before, very good. It's very helpful, everyone around me is a Christian, some more close-minded than others(not saying every Chistian is, just those around me :p), so it's very much appreciated in my part.

to see that people who were shunned by the church or society are striving for their acceptance again. im an ex-muslim and in the Quraan it clearly states that homosexuality is sinful, evil, unforgivable, and other monsterous claims. therefore i had to turn my back agaisnt all religions. im quite satisfied with doing so because i for one dont really care what happens in the after life, all what matters to me is how i live my life right now, and how to be a good human being. im not athiest because i believe in a higher entity but im not sure of its place and how to respond to it.

I remember watching that One Punk Under God documentary and really enjoyed it. I never knew Tammy Faye and Jim had a son with his own ministry and I found him to be really impressive -- that he sticks to his convictions and listens to his heart. He seems like such a kind and loving guy.

Soul Force came to my University two years ago, and it was so great to see them there, even though I couldn't openly join (since I would face expulsion).

But I hope to one day be able to make an impact in a similar way, to learn to love God, and submit that the God-self is dually mysterious and grace-filled.
